Talking Chop Fantasy '09
Fantasy season is approaching! I have created two leagues - anyone is welcome to join one or both. Obviously it's preferable if you're able to keep up with the league all season - that makes it more enjoyable for everyone involved.
Talking Chop - League #1: Auction-based, roto scoring, 12 teams. Generic 5x5 categories. Generic ESPN rosters (C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, CI, MI, OF x 5, UTIL, P x 9, BN x 3, DL). Max 162 GS for pitchers.
Talking Stats - League #2: Straight draft, roto scoring, 10 teams. HR, RBI, OBP, SLG, Net SB | K, W, ERA, WHIP, IP categories. Custom roster (C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF, UTIL, P x 9, BN x 2, DL x 2). Max 162 GS for pitchers.
Please send an e-mail to abernethyj@gmail.com if you're interested, along with the league(s) you would like to join.

I refuse to join a league with game limits for pitchers.

You can still invest less of your draft into SP and then stream throughout the season…just not as much as with you could with no GS limit. I like this way because it encourages playing both SPs and RPs, without giving too much weight to either. Plus, no team in reality could have more than 162 games started anyway, so this adds a bit of realism.

After the “too long” Dunn argument, I definitely want to be in a fantasy league with bigjoe, Smoltz Beard, and cbwilk…

I dont get it max 162 GS. GS= Game started? which pitcher is in 162 games anyways. Someone please explain.
A maximum of 162 games started just means that 162 is the limit on how many games your pitchers can start…relievers are not affected by this. It just puts a limit on pitcher streaming (picking up Tim Redding for his start against the Braves, and then dropping him immediately afterwards to pick up someone else, thereby getting Redding’s stats for the game without keeping him on your roster for longer than necessary). Pitcher streaming is a viable strategy (as bigjoe and bwellnjonesco know) to achieve high K and W totals while hoping your streamers don’t kill you in ERA and WHIP. It’s just another strategy aspect of fantasy baseball that some owners prefer and others don’t.

If you’re so desperate to avoid streaming, limit the number of moves per week to 3. Don’t punish the people who draft smart and don’t carry a bench full of players that get you one extra game a week, and instead use those slots on quality starting pitchers.

Instead of drafting extra position players to sit on my bench and do nothing, I draft extra pitchers that don’t suck to give me good starts. I have no use for someone like Delmon Young sitting on my bench doing nothing, and have much more use for someone like a Jorge Campillo giving me a league average start a week.
If you cap the moves per week, people can’t stream starters as efficiently (IE dropping 3 guys a day to get whoever is starting on that day). If you can only drop 3 guys per week…no big deal.

I follow, but it looks to me like they’re both means to the same end – preventing a streaming shitstorm. Streaming is still a viable strategy, but both methods put a cap on it, and I prefer unlimited transactions because that allows you to have turnover on the back end of your roster as necessary. Both leagues have a tight bench (2-3) so there’s only a limited amount of player hoarding along with the unlimited transactions – gotta ride your horses. I don’t think this punishes people who draft well – if you do, then your team will be successful regardless.

No offense…but I hate roto scoring. I only really do head-to-head scoring anymore.
I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.
I’ve tried both and prefer roto for baseball and H2H for football. It just makes more sense to me.
