In case you missed it... Hanson pitching.

I managed to record what I could of the top of the 3rd & 4th when Tommy Hanson was pitching. Sorry about the quality.

The curveball he threw for strike three?

Nasty, nasty, and more nasty.

Command didn’t seem to be all there, but the movement and velocity on his pitches is excellent.

That’s what they said on the telecast. Another reason why watching baseball on ESPN is just awful. That’d be the worst slider in history if it was one.

Thank you for taking the time to post these, I had to go to class at the end of the 2nd and was pretty mad I missed him pitching.

by Eagles365 on Feb 26, 2009 9:23 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

What I noticed.

1. He stuck mostly to fastballs. However, his breaking pitches where very solid. He struck out David Newhan on what looked like a 12-6 curve where the batter didn’t even take his bat off his shoulder.

2. I like his delivery. Smooth motion, easy and relaxed. He does seem to have some recoil motion on his throws…kind of like he slings it instead of having a pure overhand delivery. I like it, though. It creates a smaller window for the batter to pick up the ball. Also, I think that type of delivery fools hitters as the arm deceptively picks up speed right before release.

3. He’s a big kid.

by kalesi on Feb 26, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

His delivery has its strengths but its not free and easy. That sling motion is a high effort arm action and it generally isn’t conducive to plus command. That arm action is usually one used by undersized guys who are looking for more torque and not long guys with great natural leverage. But it works for him and his stuff is very good so these are minor quibbles. That deception and his plus stuff can take him a long way in this game if he can continue to improve his command. He is the real deal

by jeg on Feb 26, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That sling action was the first thing I noticed about him, and it certainly made me worry. But most people that have studied mechanics said it isn’t going to put additional stress on his shoulder/elbow, correct?

We should have signed Adam Dunn.

by Smoltz's Beard on Feb 27, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There is somewhat of a split opinion on that but it probably has more to do with the individual’s ligament strength and flexibility than anything else. Very little is understood about what causes arm injuries and this phobia of mechanics that deviate from the Rocket’s has lead to guys like Lincecum sliding down the draft further than their abilities merit. Personally, I’m worried that the slinging motion might prevent him from developing top command but don’t think its an injury concern.

Kyle Boddy has a good analysis of Hanson’s delivery over at drivelinemechanics. He likes Hanson’s delivery more than some others do but he points out a couple areas he considers potentially problematic.

I think Heath Ledger was a very dark individual, hence the reason why he was quite and reserved. But that is just my opinion, I don’t think his death was an “accidental overdose,” he knew what he was doing.

He had a history of insomnia, came down with pneumonia while shooting his final movie with Terry Gilliam, and according to several witnesses on the movie, “all he wanted to do was sleep, and he was taking alot of meds as well to help.”

You can’t just write him off, dude. He had a lethal cocktail that maybe could have been prevented, but he didn’t do it intentionally.

by Chief Noc-A-Homa on Feb 27, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The guy was a good actor, and it is sad he died, but either 1) he knew what he was doing, or 2) he wasn’t very bright. I think most people know that when you “take a lot of meds,” especially different kinds for different symptoms, that they can interact with one another. Why, with everything that he had going for him, would he chance it by mixing them?

Tests showed that Ledger died from “acute intoxication by the combined effects” of the pain medications oxycodone and hydrocodone, the antihistamine doxylamine (also used for insomnia), the sleeping medication temazepam, and the anti-anxiety drugs diazepam and alprazolam.

I mean, that is a shit load of different shit. If he wasn’t doing it on purpose, then he was a moron.

by mvandonsel on Feb 27, 2009 2:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Alot of actors are morons

I’m not going to judge him, because nobody is perfect. But hopefully this was a red flag to many people who were mixing meds without thinking twice.

Check out “The Brothers Grimm” if you ever get a chance. Really good flick with Heath Ledger and Matt Damon.

2 extremely underrated performances by Hoffman and Sandler. Sandler’s best work to-date. I took back every bad thing I had ever said about Sandler’s acting after seeing this movie.

At some point, we need to start an alternative site to discuss music and movies

I don’t want to just stroll (figuratively speaking, of course) into a website where I’ve never been and don’t know the posters and start talking pop culture. Nor do I want to start a fanpost about how I just got around to watching The Prestige, and hey wasn’t it cool? filler filler filler.

As it is, you can count on at least one of the fanposts turning into some sort of pop culture discussion, but you’ll forgive me if I’m far too lazy and impatient to wait for a specific movie to be discussed.
