25 Man Roster
I like doing these from time to time just to see where we stand at the time. I'm going to give my predictions for opening day 25 man roster and my roster at september if we are playoff bound.

Now my September roster if everything goes well.
Rotation
1. Lowe
2. Hudson
3. Vazquez
4. JJ
5. Kawakami/Glavine
Lineup
6. J. Anderson
7. Yunel

I don't see soriano making it the whole season. I still see the option of Hanson maybe being in the bullpen at the end of the season for the playoffs. But I didn't list it because that it a guess.

I agree with most of your statements only that Stockman ???? No I don’t think he is going to be on the opening day roster. I could be wrong but I just don’t see it happening I would rather see a younger gun get on the roster than him.

stockman is out of options and flat out throws gas. he had a great year last year in aaa. if he doesnt make the pen he will end up in a trade kinda like last year with yates.

That second lineup wasn’t really necessary, you could have just said “Hudson and Moylan will be back in September”.
The second lineup was unnecessary because there’s exactly 0% chance that the only changes by then will be that Hudson and Moylan are back. I defy anyone to find a season where the roster was that similar at the start and the finish.

Francoeur is batting cleanup this year

Hes better than B. Jones batting cleanup

And McCann would be worlds better than both of them. BUT HE’S NOT A TRUE CLEANUP HITTER RAWRGH GOTTA GO WITH VETERAN LEADERSHIP

1. anderson
2. johnson
3. escobar
4. jones
5. mccann
6-8 the pupu platter dealers choice of anderson, francoeur, and kotchman (not all that bad of a 6-8).
this gives us a fast active top of the lineup as long as kelly is a little more even keel and escobar isnt hurt and cuts down on his vidros. chipper isnt a true power guy but doubles and clutch hits with fast runners in front of him could give him 140rbis in this lineup.

Lineup
no way G Anderson hits cleanup.
I’d say the lineup will look more like this to start the season:
1. J. Anderson
2. Y. Escobar
3. C. Jones
4. B. McCann
5. G. Anderson
6. J. Francouer
7. C. Kotchman
8. Kelly Johnson
of your 5-8 kelly is the best hitter by far, why bat him 8th?

because johnson hits and runs like a bitch

Hmm
As much as I dislike the Phillies, I will admit I was impressed with their ideology of Victorino at 6th, with the premise of saying that it was like another lead-off batter. And let’s face it, it worked for them. Not saying that the Braves should go head first and copy it, but if the Braves were to try it, I’d go with a lineup of such:
J. Anderson/G. Blanco
Y. Escobar
C. Jones
G. Anderson
B. McCann
K. Johnson
C. Kotchman
J. Francoeur
Pitcher
Yes, G. Anderson is taking clean-up duties here, because there is a lot of criticism about the catcher batting clean-up. But the point is, a guy with OBP and a decent base-runner in KJ would be batting sixth, with a #2 style hitter in Kotchman right behind him. Which leaves Francoeur, who would be batting 8th, not because he’s a poor hitter (hopefully), but it give him a chance to drive in some runs, provided KJ or Kotch could get on base.
It ain’t pretty, but hey; it’s just theory. And this is the only rosterbatory list I’ve put up all off-season.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
thats 4 lefties in a row, if only GA was a righty
by bravesguy311 on Feb 25, 2009 1:11 PM EST up reply actions
With the exception of the bench guys, the team is heavily weighted with lefties. If you want more righties, that would involve bringing in Infante, Diaz, and Prado… I thought about that, and I figured I’d rather take my chances.

I agree
That this is the lineup we’ll see. Except, I bet FYF gets the spot after McCann because that’s how Bobby works. So switch those two and that’s my prediction. I’m not saying its the best lineup, but that is what I see happening.
"Have you ever had your heart broken?"
"Yeah, when we lost the pennant in '87."
Yea
Not disagreeing with ur lineup, just hating our lefty lineup, one more right handed batter would make me feel much better

Why
Is Schafer not included on any of these lists? He will be starting by September
60% of the time, it works every time
Bc this is February.

schafer still has a lot to proove. he had two good streaches and one francoeurian streach in the middle of the summer. he is young and probably will see a september call up, but only because the rosters expand.

does anyone think casey could find some power this season and become a clean up hitter. I think he could.
SHAG23
Casey could slug .450-.460 and max out at 25 HR but I would probably take the under on the HR’s. He is a good hitter, just not a classic power bat. I wouldn’t mind seeing him or Kelly hitting in front of Chipper. I would probably set the lineup 1. either of the Gregosh Blanderson duo 2. Yunel 3. Kotchman/ Kelly 4. Chipper 5. McCann 6. Kelly/ Kotchman 7. Francoeur 8. G. Anderson
"Fools rush in where fools have been before"
kotchman is more of a chipper lite doubles guy, not to say he couldnt find some gap power but he isnt a three fates guy.
anybody wish we still had the unibrow?
by heapofoatmeal on Feb 25, 2009 3:03 PM EST up reply actions
In retrospect
That would have been a lot easier than the multiple trades and headaches and handwringing that we got instead.

I guess I’ll chip in this group-circle rosterbation.
L J. Anderson
R Escobar
L McCann
S Jones
L G. Anderson
R Francoeur
L Johnson
L Kotchman

I don't know why people here dont have more fatih in Kotch.
I think after Chip, he is our most “prototypical” 3-hole hitter.
Anderson
Escobar
Kotchman
Jones
McCann
Johnson
Anderson
Francoeur
I was bored so
I ran the first lineup in the OP through the Lineup Analysis at baseballmusings.com. Using the players averages over the last 3 years, (except Josh, for whom I used his minor league totals) and the pitcher spot I put in as .195 OBA/.150 SLG.
It comes out as worth 4.902 runs a game.
Switching KJ to 3, Chipper to 4, and Garret to 8th gives us 4.967 runs per game.
Our optimal lineup, at 5.183 runs a game, is:
Escobar
Chipper
Kotchman
BMac
KJ
Francoeur
Garret
Pitcher
Josh
Not a terrible idea, gives us a chance of having another speedy guy on base for the heart of the order when the lineup turns over.
We should have signed Adam Dunn.

I know he tried it, but does he still do it? I.e. did he think it was a good enough idea that he’ll do it the whole season?

I thought I remembered seeing a game last season with that type of lineup still in place.
We should have signed Adam Dunn.

There's a good chance,
He didn’t have a single starting lineup with the pitcher hitting 9th last season.
He did it all season in '08.
The Brewers did it for most of April/May as well, but went back to the traditional lineup for the rest of the season.
Not really, they seem to go with "The Book" and think batting the pitcher 8th is best for the order.
Because having a decent hitter in the 9 spot produces more RBI opportunities for the top of the order who should, in theory, be your best hitters. The 8th spot is actually where you should bat your worst hitter.
Garret also has better numbers than Frenchy, but is hitting behind him because you want someone who has a chance at driving those runners on in before the pitcher comes up, which is where low OBP/High AVG/SLG types are most useful in the lineup.
