Glavine is signed
Ken Rosenthal reported that the Glavine deal is done. One year, $1 million with incentives that could push the total value to $4.5 million. From what I understand, most of the incentive cash would be deferred to later years. Rosenthal said before that nearly all of the incentives are based on Glavine being on the roster at certain points of the season. That seems like an awful lot of money for a guy that doesn't have to do anything but be on the roster? You would think most of the incentives could be tied to innings pitched, starts, and that kind of thing. Not just being a warm body on the roster when we all know that Cox wouldn't cut Glavine loose even if the third grade girl's softball team at the local elementary school lit him up.

Glavine being around is a good thing. He’s a good guy, and he’s got a new arm. The younger guys are going to come to guys like him for advice, and he’s going to be there. That’s awesome.
Lol, if in fact this is legit that he has signed. The last week or two has been weird. Come to think of it…….haha.

Most likely he will get all $4.5M and that is a bunch for a guy that will struggle to keep his ERA under 5.
Yeah, I saw the breakdown after I posted this. The $4.5M seems easily obtainable, although at least it’s deferred.
This is probably an overpay.

LOL. I originally wrote “probably a serious overpay,” then dropped the serious a couple of extra mil isn’t really all that “serious.”
So, take your pick:

Young guys?
We already had one of the oldest starting rotations out there, I think our veteran influence card was already punched.
…a new arm?

You forgot that he’s going to be a mentor for Rohrbough and Locke.

Why didn’t they just use that money to hire a nutritionist for Diaz & Reyes?

Dave O’brien is saying that Glavine will move to left field and platoon with Matt Diaz. On a more serious note, I will reserve judgment until I see him pitch. It is likely that this will be a waste, but I will remain optimistic that Glavine can put a decent season together.
What’s with all this judgment reserving? We know what we’re getting from Glavine – a 5.60 ERA.

If anything else, it will keep Frenchy on his toes.
Plus, it will make Chipper seem younger. And Chipper is a young 36. He still has the moves.
We’ll see how it goes.

When Glav wins the Cy Young ...
Um. Nevermind.

Perfect...
just what we needed to spend this money on. “Oil Can” Boyd is trying to attempt a comeback, why the hell not ink him to a 1 year $2mil deal?
at this point who really cares about glavine, get us an outfielder!

Geez...
Come on guys, Glavine can be a very capable pitcher. It’s funny that people have been groaning about him for more than 20 years and yet he has won over 300 games. That’s vintage Glavine though. Somehow he gets more out of nothing than any player I’ve ever seen in history. I mean, he has a pretty good change up but what does he have that is so special? Look at his stats, everything tells you that his record shouldn’t be that good.
He just had surgery on his arm and I suspect he has been hurting for a long time. Pitchers like him just don’t have big drop offs and his easy motion should give him another 3-4 years of pitching. Yes, he could pitch until he is 47. Look, why is Jamie Moyer still in the majors? Maybe Glavine should throw slower… ;-)
Therefore, I’m willing to bet right here that he will have a sub 4.00 ERA and he will have 25 starts and go 12-7. He has a better arm after surgery and he likely be paired up against lesser pitchers.
Don’t look at me like I’m a big Tom Glavine fan. I’m really not. I’ve wanted to can his keester for years when he was a Brave. I’ve just grown to respect the guy. Besides, who else has a 300 game winner as their #5 starter?

REALLY? No chance his ERA is below 4 this year. Unless he pitches out of the bullpen or something.
