Andy Marte Designated for Assignment by the Indians
Humm... the tribe has 10 days to trade, release, or outright him to the minors. He's still just 25 years old. Could a return to the bosom of the Braves system rejuvenate his career? He plays on the left side of the field, could he be a long shot option for left field? I wouldn't mind sticking him at triple-A and seeing what becomes of him, or seeing if he can hit in spring training.

I’d be for it if we didn’t have to give up a roster spot for him. And I wouldn’t be for giving up anything in a trade either. But, if he’s released, or elects free agency, then I’d be all for it.

40 Man spot vs. minor league deal
Help me out here CB. Am I right thinking that if we trade for him we would be forced to put him on the 25 man roster and keep him on the team all year (considering he is out of options), but if he’s released we could sign him to a minor league deal which wouldn’t cause us to have to drop someone from the 40 man?

I think you’re right that he’s out of options, so you’re also right that if we traded for him (which would of course involve losing someone we have now) we would have to have him on the 25 roster, or we’d have to put him through waivers like the Indians are now. And again, if we did this, right now we’d have to drop somebody from the 40 man to make room for him.
And right again, if we were to sign him to a minor league deal, we wouldn’t have to create a spot on the 40 man right now. Though, if we did call him up at some point, he’d still be out of options and couldn’t be sent down again without clearing waivers.
I’m also pretty sure he has enough service time to be able to elect free agency if a team sends him to the minors, but I’ve never really heard what the service time is on that, something like a couple of years.
So yeah, you’re right on all counts. A minor league deal would be the best, and that really goes for anyone you’re just trying out.

I'll pass
Even when this guy was a number 1 prospect when the Braves first brought him up he still sucked. In 513 at-bats he has a managed a .221 average, a .268 on-base, 9 home runs and 52 RBI. Even in the minors he is just a .271 hitter. Not that impressive. He hasn’t been a number 1 prospect in 3 years and he just hasn’t looked good in the minors at all.
Why not?
give him a minor league deal, see what happens. It’s not as though he’s going to be taking playing time from anyone – we don’t have a hot 3B prospect in Gwinnett for 2009.

The guy has totally tanked in the last 4 years. Just goes to show you that no matter how high of a prospect a guy is it doesn’t mean that he is going to be a great major league player.
Definitely has...
but there is literally zero downside to signing someone to a minor league deal. Even if it’s a .0005% chance that he makes something of it, we can live with paying him <100 thousand to kick around AAA.

This list isn’t a 100% comparable, but nonetheless – see Johan Santana (rule 5 pick), Heath Bell (ushered out of NY), Adrian Gonzalez (given up on by TEX) and a whole host of others. Cheap risks are always good, if they pan out you’re a genius – if they don’t … they were, well, cheap!

Man, Heath Bell. That was just a great example of how the Mets are dumb. And maybe a little racist. I swear, if a Latino guy did half of what he did in AAA he’d have been their ML closer. That guy was freaking Papelbon for Norfolk.

I’m a fan of Bell, too. The guy may not look the most impressive in terms of physicality and stats, but when it comes down to it, the guy is fearless. I have very fond memory of him eating Rockies hitters in that memorable game 163 two years ago. And went right down the pipe and blew away Matt Holliday in the last pitch he threw. Who knew Coors could get so quiet afterwards?
He’s a total ham too. Great with fans, media, and has shown no reason to be anything but a likeable player. That being said, there’s probably your reason why he didn’t fit in New York.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Good call about New York. Yes, Heath is the unparallelled man. He was here in Norfolk for four years and the dude could run for mayor. He’d regularly go down in uniform and welcome fans into the stadium, he treats everybody like they’re his best friend.
My favorite Heath moment was during one of the ODU/Tides exhibition games right before the season. The Tides pitch for both sides so in the bottom of the ninth (they always play a full 9, even when the Tides are winning) Heath comes out to pitch against the Tides, technically for ODU. Well, he goes a step further, trading in his Tides uniform for the uniform of the ODU player with the same number. So he’s out there throwing 99 and people are like who is this?, checking their roster and wondering why this outfielder is throwing this hard. So he finally gets Lastings Milledge to ground out to end the game, but his bat breaks and while Milledge is running to first Heath grabs the broken top half of the bat and playfully chucks it at him.
Love that dude.

Gonzalez
Not sure it’s correct to say that AG was “given up on.” He was part of the piss poor trade for Otsuka/Eaton, but he was blocked in Texas.
Jeremy Guthrie and Brandon Phillips are better examples.

Damn, that was the guy I couldn’t remember. Good catch. You’re probably right about AG too, he might not have been given up on but what they landed from SD for him left a LOT to be desired.

The Marlins traded him (and others!!!) for Ugueth Urbina.
If thats not giving up on someone, I don’t know what is. At least they got a ring out of the deal.
SWAGGA LIKE BJONES, SWAGGA LIKE BJONES
I didn’t realize they designated Marte to make room for Juan Salas. I also didn’t realize Salas is 30. Man, I saw that guy when he was still a 3B. I’m old.

You're old?
Call me in 10 years or so, then we’ll talk.

I’m only old in relation to the careers of players I’ve seen. You’re old for, well, the world.

Bring him Back
I would love to sign him to a minor league deal he could absolutely just be a late bloomer (very late) and someone needs to give him another chance to make something of himself.
"The only time the Mets win is in the offseason"
No reason not to bring him back on a minor league deal
Of course, I don’t see much of a reason to think he could handle LF, but it’s not like our system is loaded with infielders.
Think Memory Lane will get any stimulus money?
