Of course I was in a meeting all afternoon or else this would have been front paged sooner.

Oops
Looks like someone jumped the gun. No Griffey agreement yet.
Mark Bowman confirms no agreement!

Hopefully we can have 5 people making a Fanpost about this so we can have the entire section dedicated to Mr. Griffey.

According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman

he says Griffey to telling friends that he will chose the Braves.

This reminded me of one of my favorite FJM posts about the Griffey trade last year.
So who hits cleanup versus a LHP? Or do I not want to know?

Epic post.
They have so many classics I had forgotten about this one. I’m definetly calling him Griffbones if we sign him.

265 AVG, 20 HRS, 75 RBI's, is what we can expect from Griffey. I will take that anyday from a future HOF'er who will be a great influence in the clubhouse, and put asses in the seats.

hold your horses...
You’re hoping he plas the whole season. Now if those are combined numbers for him and Diaz then they will be a very successful platoon.
by themurph on Feb 17, 2009 2:45 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Bobby will play Griffey more than Diaz.
It will not be a true platoon situation. Griffey will most likely play everyday to start the season, and if all goes well he will get a couple of days off a week during the hot summer. Bobby loves Griffey and wants him to get off to a good start, so he will give him every opportunity to succeed. Plus even when Diaz starts Griffey will get a PH at-bat late in the game.

well he will play Griffey more than Diaz because Diaz faces lefties and lefties are the minority…thus Diaz will get less ABs
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

I would say McCann he hits lefty’s well, but know one in baseball wants to hit there catchers clean-up.

Mike Piazza had 3400 PAs in the cleanup spot. Bengie Molina had 11 PAs NOT in the cleanup spot last year. Ryan Doumit had 266 in the cleanup spot.

Well if Bengie Molina can do it then fucking Matt Diaz can too
I heard somewhere else that Chipper might be batting cleanup, which is fine by me.

There are always exceptions. It has always been looked down upon in baseball to hit your catcher clean-up.

by Jessero on Feb 17, 2009 2:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Remember towards the end of last year, McCann batted 4th behind Chipper, mostly out of necessity, since the team really had no other serious power threats, but right at the end, Chipper spoke about how that McCann was good, but shouldn’t have been a #4, because he’s playing the most demanding position, and it kind of reflected in his late-season fatigue when Heap pretty much popped out practically twice a game? Kind of like that. Wow, that’s a run-on sentence, too.

Baseball purist want there catchers to focus on the pitching staff and calling the game.
I believe McCann is an exception to that rule being one of the best catchers in baseball. He is our best option “THIS YEAR” to hit clean-up.

by Jessero on Feb 17, 2009 3:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You’re missing the point. The fact of the matter is, most catchers aren’t totally awesome hitters like your corner IF/OR, so thats why they shouldn’t be hitting leadoff. I don’t think anyone will make the argument that Robin Venture should be hitting cleanup and Mike Piazza should be in the 3 hole.

I really like this signing. Griffey will give a cheap option for one season. At the beginning of the offseason you had Ibanez getting 3 years and $30 million while Burrell got 2 years and $16 million. While the Ibanez signing is going to look bad after this season the Burrell signing is going to be a good one. I think that Griffey if he plays the whole season should hit .260 with 15-20 home runs and 64-75 RBI. He should get right at 500 at-bats and we always have Diaz to spell him.
I also heard that the two most likely guys to be taken off the 40 man roster are Anthony Lerew and Gregor Blanco. That is if Glavine also signs.

No reason to be down on this...
Griffey and Diaz will produce at the same level of a Swisher or Nady without having to give up prospects and future payroll space. It’s a good move.
Oh, Bobby.
by sdp on Feb 17, 2009 3:11 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Uh.
No.
Nick Swisher’s value over the last three years according to fangraphs:
$11.6 million, $14.2 million, $4.7 million.
Ken Griffey Jr’s value:
$ -2.3 million, $.6 million, $.7 million.
Matt Diaz’ value:
$7.5 million, $12.3 million, $-3.7 million.
There’s a good 15 million dollar discrepancy there. In fact, Griffey has only been worth about $15 million over the last 7 seasons, mostly because of 2005 when he was worth $11 million. Swisher is better than Griffey by a long shot. We’d be better off with just Diaz and saving the money. This will probably go poorly, unless Griffey rebounds and has a 2005 type year, which seems almost impossible. The man can’t field and that kills any value his bat brings.
by Perrinbar on Feb 17, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Very true…but doesn’t alot of the negative value tied to Griffey relate to how poorly he’s been performing against LH pitching?
by Smoltz's Beard on Feb 17, 2009 3:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That is certainly a part of it, no doubt.
But most of it is really his fielding. If you look at his fielding values, it’s pretty terrible for the last several years. If he only faces righties it would certainly help, but he is a black hole of defense over there and it swallows up his batting pluses.
by Perrinbar on Feb 17, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I was looking at Fangraphs and was surprised to see how bad he’s been defensively for the last 5 or 6 years. However, what I found interesting is that his UZR/150 was better for CF than it was for RF.
I certainly would have rather had Swisher out there, but for the price I am more optimistic than I thought I would be with a Griffey/Diaz platoon.

Small sample size.
Half a season of UZR data is pretty much worthless in real evaluation.
by Double06 on Feb 17, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Doesn’t UZR/150 take the small sample size into account? If I’m not mistaken it takes UZR date and extrapolates it over the course of 150 games? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

No when Wren decides that he won't win us the NLCS
We have way to much trade bait not to do something if were still in the race. Anderson changes that because he’s much more of an everyday player compared to Griffey. Not to say your boy won’t get 150 PA’s. Even with anderson in the lineup there’s to many what if’s with anderson/diaz and schafer/anderson/blanco and frenchy. If were still in it someone will be dealt.
