Griffey to decide between M's and Braves by Monday or Tuesday

Multiple sources have indicated that free-agent slugger Ken Griffey Jr. will decide between the Mariners and Atlanta Braves either by today or early Tuesday at the latest. The Braves are said to have no more than $2.5 million in total compensation to offer the 39-year-old, with base salary likely to be less than $2 million. But the Braves do offer Griffey the possibility of seeing his daughter play basketball in Atlanta while his son will be starting high-school football just an hour's flight away in Orlando, Fla., where Griffey has a home. It seems Griffey will play in Atlanta. For one, he doesnt need the money and at this point in his career, family is probablity more important. He's 20 minutes away from Spring Training in Orlando and the Braves have a better chance of making the playoffs then the M's.

Looks like some pretty compelling reasons for Griffey to be in a Braves uniform this year.

Would not surprise me if he picked Atlanta, I am actually hoping he does at this point b/c I would rather have Diaz/Jones than Garret Anderson. I mean his daughter plays BBall in Atlanta, and he lives 20 minutes away from the Braves Spring Training Facility. What else could you want plus it is basically a 1 hr flight from Atlanta to his part of Florida.

Also rumored is that the M’s have only $1.5 million to spend on him and I am sure the Braves could offer at-least $3 million, plus Griffey you must consider a winner/ contender and not a pretender which is what the M’s will be this season.

Go Braves!!!

I would feel a lot better if we were getting Griffey and it was 1997. I don’t know what to think about this move. He is old and I would like to see what BJones could do. We will see though.

I really hope the Braves don’t spend $3 million on Griffey. I think playing with Ichiro is going to be great for Griffey and he should do it. If the Braves are going to embrace mediocrity in LF, why not embrace it at a cheaper price with a younger player?

by bengoodfella on Feb 16, 2009 5:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Griffey will not be getting $3 million this year. The Mariners have little money left only about $1.5 million while the Braves could offer him $2 million plus some for incentives. Griffey is far from mediocrity in LF. None of the players currently on the roster could give you the same production as Griffey can. He should give you 20 home runs while no one on the roster could do that.

by jack dein on Feb 16, 2009 6:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He had 490 AB’s last year and did not get 20 HRs, so I am not quite as confident as you he will reach that mark. I like how the Braves go from signing old pitchers who are fan favorites to trying to find old outfielders who are fan favorites.

I am not going to disagree with you about production, I would just rather spend money on a permanent OF that will have a chance to be here in 2 years. Maybe Griffey will be great and I will be wrong.

I said $3 million and you said $2 million plus incentives, which is not that far off $3 million, so there is very little difference in what I said and you said if Griffey reaches those incentives.

by bengoodfella on Feb 16, 2009 6:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why do you care so much?

What are the Braves gonna do? Sit on the last 7 mill? I doubt it. This way they get a guy who can maybe give you 20 HR and also puts butts in the seats. Whatever the Braves give Griffey they will get back.

by someguy917 on Feb 16, 2009 6:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I care because this is my favorite baseball team

Why should the Braves just throw money around because they have it to spend? They could use that money to trade for an actually above average LF at the trading deadline or for many other purposes. If you think I am wrong, that is fine. I just don’t think we will get the money back we spend on him. If I am wrong, why do you care?

I bet Cincinnati wishes they could get back some of that money they spent to have him on the DL during some of his tenure there.

by bengoodfella on Feb 16, 2009 6:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I really don’t think that any of the current options on our team are that good. Anderson will be fine in center field until Shafer is ready. Blanco is a bit of a fluke player, Brandon Jones hasn’t shown anything at the major league level to prove that he is going to be a good major league player. I like Diaz as a platoon or bench player but not as an everyday starter. It’s really hard to tell who is going to be available at the trade deadline, and waiting until then to fix our LF issue would be foolish. Could Swisher be cheaper then sure but we could also be out of the playoffs by then. As far as the teams wanting the money they spent on injured players back I think every team has one of those players. I’d like to have the money we spent on Hampton or Glavine or Soriano back but its just a risk you take.

by jack dein on Feb 16, 2009 6:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. I just think we will be out of playoff contention if Griffey is out LF, even in a platoon with Diaz. I like Diaz as a platoon player as well. There are not a whole lot of options available right now and if the Braves go with Griffey, then I really hope I am wrong and he has a great year.

MANNY RAMERIZ

by AlRoBraves95 on Feb 16, 2009 9:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good lord..

…B Jones has had 135 total at-bats at the Major League level, that’s a pretty damn small sample size if you ask me. And if you’re basing your analysis on that, you’re going to have problems.

by RainDelay on Feb 16, 2009 8:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My issue with Jones is that even if he proves he can hit in the majors which he hasn’t yet he still is not a power hitter that we need. Even in the minors he has never hit more than 19 home runs in a season, and for some reason he hasn’t been able to bring that power to the majors yet. He has only 1 home run in 135 at-bats. I’d like to see him succeed but if we want to win in 2009 I don’t think we can take the chance on him this year.

PLEASE

Griffey’s got a big butt. I hate watching his AB’s, because his butt looks like it could topple over skyscrapers. Adam Dunn is like this big bear of a lumberjack, but since Swo12bv’s called dibs on him, I guess I’d have to say that Abreu and his likeness to L.L. Cool J will have to do. I wonder if Abreu’s abs could grate cheese like L.L.’s?

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Doesnt The Yankee Water Boy make $3millon?

Ken Griffey is a classy Hall of Famer.Part time Ken Griffey is better than quite a few major leaguers. What if Frenchy has another bad season? Who is playing centerfield and will they hit 20 hrs fulltime? We need Ken Griffey.

If he goes back to the M’s he gets what he deserves b/c he cares more about money and merchandise than he does winning a ring and trust me when I say this you are not going to win jack in Seattle this season, Griffey the ball is in your court.

I hope junior signs with the braves i think hes got one more year with 20hr,75 rbi and hes one of the greatest to ever play so the whole team could benefit being around him. if he does sign it would be like a dream come ture, even though he is past his prime. my two favorite players growing up have always been chipper and griffet and i always wanted junior wearing a braves jersey

bengoodfella, I’m with you on this. Griffey jr., and his ilk from the 1995 season is
why I am a hardcore Braves fan. I didn’t want to drag past heartaches into the picture,
but I’m thankful in a way. I was an angel fan up until that time in ‘95, but following my
happy divorce from the halos, I was looking for direction, a class act, something more than a tawdry night in a cheap hotel to ease the pain. I remember Dale Murphy, from
my home state, and that made the preliminary connection. A solid club. A team you
can believe in. And I’ve been with these guys ever since, and until the end of time, man.

I don't understand how you all seem to be completely ok

with ignoring defense and it’s impact on the game.

I should be seeing a bunch of people scolding their front office for even considering putting Griffey in the field at this point, yet you all seem to be focused on what would be considered a meager contribution at the plate by anyone not named KGJ.

by Omerta on Feb 17, 2009 11:08 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

We’re not ignoring defense, just that the options for LF have all been pretty crappy. Lemme guess, you’d prefer Garret Anderson?

by Smoltz's Beard on Feb 17, 2009 12:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

100% correct.

At least with Anderson you’re not asking late stage knees need draining Ellis Burks to man a corner outfield spot on a semi-regular basis.

And you will likely get similiar production at the plate.
