Outfield Options

Now that Abreu has signed with the Angels and Adam has signed with the lowly Nats, it seems the Braves have little options in getting there LF. The only players that are out there are Ken Griffey, Jim Edmonds, Luis Gonzalez, and Garret Anderson. None of these options are appealing but lets see if any of these players can really help the Braves. Lets break them down: Ken Griffey, 40, has been hurt since going to the Reds. Showed a little life last year but looks like he's heading back home to Seattle. Batted .245 with the Reds and .260 with the WS. Thanks but no Thanks! Jim Edmonds! This can be very interesting. Jim, 38, can be a one year bridge for Shafer. Batted .256 19HRS and 45rbi's in 250 at-bats with the Cubs. Is still solid in CF and still has a little pop. Stick him between Jeff and Kotch and you may get a balanced lineup. May be looking for a one-year deal with incentives. Nick Swisher, 27, batted .219 in 153 games last year with the Sox's. Yes he's still young and is a switch hitter but too expensive, doesnt hit for average(.244 career BA, but averages 28hrs a season) doesnt solve our 4th hole problem. $5.3 mil next year, $6.75 in 2010, $9mil in 2011 and $10.25mil team option in 2012. Worse comes to worse, I wouldnt mind taking him. Garret Anderson, 36, career .296 hitter, decent OBP 325 last year and a solid defender. Good guy in the club house, a veteran, and a great teammate. Has been averaing about 81 rbi's the last few years and has been hitting around 17hrs and batting .280. Obviously past his prime but can be a decent pickup. Luis Gonzalez,40, 3 teams in 3 years. Played in 136 games last year with the Marlins and his power is declining fast. Only 8hrs, 47rbi's and batted .260. At best, a 4th outfielder. Summary: If I had to pick, i would sign Edmonds to a one-year $4million deal and trade for Swisher, what do you think??

Both?

How bout neither! Edmonds won’t even sniff $4M in a contract this year.

I say sign anderson to a one year deal for 3 million with a 2010 option. By 2011 I say heyward would be ready. And let Schafer and Josh Anderson battle out for the CF Job.

The Anderson Brothers.

Griffey is close to signing with the Mariners. Edmonds is injury prone and not even close to an everyday player anymore. He’s really not that good in center field anymore either. He could probably be had for around $3 million but he isn’t worth it because he will force you to carry another outfielder just because he will not be an everyday player. I have never been high on trading for Swisher because to have as bad of a season that he had in the prime of his career scares me. Your definately not going to get 17 home runs and 81 RBI out of Anderson. And Gonzalez is nothing more than a pinch hitter and occasional starter at this point in his career.

Remind me again how a BJONES/MATTYD platoon is worse than any of these options.

because we know what we have in them. the grass is always greener when we have overpriced (anderson or edmonds at any price) veterans that were at one time possibly something.

I think that Anderson would be good, if they can get him for less than 3 Mil. It just depends on what the Braves want to do in the outfield this year. Do they want to win, or get some young guys experience. Diaz has proven he can’t his right handed pitching, BJones hasn’t proven he can hit any major league pitching. Anderson is a solid hitter that probably can’t play every day. Its a good fit with Diaz out there in a platoon situation.

The only viable option I see is Swisher, however, if the Yank-offs don’t pay part of his salary, we won’t be able to afford him anyway. So I’m saying that our best bet is probably to stick with our guns, or give a long shot to Garrett Anderson. I really don’t see anything happening with our outfield before the season starts…maybe a trade at the deadline.

I think we need another 3 topics about the outfield this weekend.

How about in the next one, there aren’t any spaces, either?

For taking the time to c/p it, and remove the spaces, be it through find/replace or manually deleting out the spaces.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I personally like how Edmonds batted .25619 HRs.

by soup du jour on Feb 13, 2009 1:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The decimal makes it interesting. It must have been in a park with rafters or something, as it got caught up the catwalk, rolled towards the outfield, and landed on Delmon Young’s head, and bounced over the wall or something.

I like Garret Anderson, think he would be a good pickup. Maybe its just the fact that he has a .296 lifetime batting average. Or the fact that he hit .293 last year, or the fact that he had more hits than anyone on our team. What would it hurt to sign him?

by wcubmac on Feb 13, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

it would hurt our bank account, it wouldnt help our power, it would hurt our OF defense… ummm also, AVG is still not a good indicator of a player’s skills.

Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?
