Pedro or Glavine?

Maybe I deserve to get ripped for this, but I've had a few Sweetwater 420s and am just wondering...

For the money, who is better right now: Pedro Martinez or Tom Glavine?

Maybe the answer is obvious, but I couldn't honestly say if I had to pick one to sign a 1 year contract, who I would rather have. Don't mistake me, I'm not suggesting we should offer Pedro a deal, because I'm not sure he fits here. But I'm looking at the two, and thinking if I were to spend roughly $3 million, which is a better investment?

Anyway, talk amongst yourselves. Again, perhaps the answer is obvious to everyone but me, but I'm not real sure.

Glavine, for all his faults last year, probably won’t miss more than a start this year. Pedro will miss half the season, and not exactly dominate when he’s available. Since they’d probably post similar ERAs, I’d take Glavine because of his tendency NOT to be injured (once again, last year aside).

Glavine hands down if he is willing (as reported) to get more incentives money that is deferred in 10’/11’…

Glavine, if only because it means you wouldn’t have to deal with Pedro.

Where do i go to talk about UNC>Duke?

I would take Glavine, for durability purposes. I think at this point in time they throw about the same speed. Also, Glavine retiring a Brave would be alot bigger deal that Pedro coming here for a year. But hey, Babe Ruth did it, so why not Pedro?

by VegasAces on Feb 13, 2009 9:49 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

that was on my brief list of movies that i hate simply due to their complete inaccuracy in terms of the Air Force

Iron Eagle – yeah, like a 15 year old kid can steal and fly an F-16 and fly it around the world (with no refuel) to bomb some other country, shoot down its enemy fighters andr rescue his dad…

Stealth – Like a guy in the navy can be a Seal, Pilot and JAG all in one career. those are 3 very very different career paths, and for one person to do them all is just retarded. Also, the Navy doesnt even fly the Stealth, the Air Force does…and that dude has some seriously long hair for an officer.

Live Free or Die Hard – ok, this one has an F-35 (not even in service yet) that can hover like a helocopter! the F-35 pilots will be the best of the best (as it is a brand new aircraft) yet, somehow this particular pilot can’t even hit an 18-wheeler with precision guided missiles…and somehow Bruce Willis can out-maneuver the most advanced aircraft in the world in an 18-wheeler….

John From Cincinatti is probably the worst TV show I’ve ever seen.

is with James Spader and Holly Hunter. It is weird as hell. If I remember right it is about people who find it sexually exciting to get into car wrecks.

That scene was legit...

That’s the movie of his that introduced me to his sick and twisted world. I remember reading a review that is was good, and I randomly watched it one night on demand. I was expecting a typical thriller, but after it was over my head was spinning. Amazing stuff. Took several viewings and repeated trips to the IMDB message board to figure most of the stuff out.

Then I went on to watch his other work. Inland Empire was fucking disturbing.

The others, i can agree with, but the Kingdom is definately a great movie.

by justincredubil02 on Feb 12, 2009 2:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It shows our political situation as good/better cause its only a typical Hollywood action film…especially Jennifer Garner, who gets shot at ALOT and doesn’t even have a scratch, and walks around the Muslim streets with tanks tops…and whats with the camera work? this pisses me off in alot of movies these days…the shakey, jerky filming style was originated for low budget “b” movies to add a distractory+suspenseful effect to the cheap set/camera/style…100 million dollar movies do not need this…

...catsports...

by bwellnjonesco on Feb 12, 2009 2:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Jerky camera movement

Saving Private Ryan. End of debate.

and no, The Kingdom has a very deep philosophical message behind it, which I find makes the movie great. Sure, the action is great, the effects are cool and there is lots of shooting, but the point of the movie is the very last scene and line.

And by the way, Jennifer Garner not getting hit is no exaggeration. I have friends who were in 3+ hour fire-fights where over 40 bad guys were killed and not 1 good guy was shot.

First, Spielberg uses changes in frame rate/field rate to film the scenes in Saving Private Ryan…You can clearly see the difference in The Kingdom, as the only thing he is doings is filming with an unmounted camera…the result? Spielberg has perfect control of what he wants to show the view…Berg is just out there playing a guessing game and filming unscripted…

As for your friends, Were they wearing tank tops? Surely not…

And, strategic military ground fire is alot different then 4 FBI agents running around a foreign city like chickens with their heads chopped off..

Depends

Pedro – more power, more movement, nastier stuff.
Glavine – less velocity, more hanging.

As pitchers, Pedro.

Pedro – brings media attention, emotion, glimpses of old Pedro, good sound bytes, relates positively to Latin players
Glavine – calm, quiet, cool demeanor, quiet tutelage of young guys, never in trouble

As team players, Glavine.

But in the end, I’d rather have neither.

Pretty funny

That my half-drunken topic turned into a film debate. Not complaining, just amused.

But I still don’t know who I’d rather have. Obviously based on personality, I’d rather have a 98 yr old Glavine rolling the ball across the plate with his foot because he lost both arms in an unfortunate hunting accident than Pedro. I’m definitely more emotionally attached to Glavine since he wore the Braves uni for so many years, which biases my opinion. But, Pedro might have a bit more gas in the tank at this point and both are coming off of injuries with Glavine’s being a bit more serious I believe.

I’d probably in the end go with Glavine because if nothing else he helps coach the younger guys. And its pretty invaluable to have a future HOFer giving advice to your up-and-comers.

Another worst movie ever was The Last Legion. Made the mistake of having a friend talk me into going to see it. Awful. I make a distinction between bad movies and movies that I can’t stand not because they’re poor quality but because they just suck. For the latter category, I’d have to nominate Beaches as being perhaps the worst time of my life. I obviously was only watching it with my girlfriend and the beer just couldn’t make the credits come fast enough.

sorry

7>4
but if you want to continue we’ll have to move to another blog. I’m sorry I fanned the flame.

so let me get this straight

it is ok for us to ramble on and on about movies, but as soon as basketball is brought up, it has to move to another blog?

Geez, you guys are like a bunch of little adolfs, aren’t you?

In this particular case, jug’s a devout UK fan, and probably participates on the UK blog. He’s trying to sucker you in to joining the UK blog to sprint with your UNC flag and probably get blitzed via the most vicious text you’ll ever see in your lifetime, that you’d wish that you were out in some combat zone in real life.

So in other words, ITS A TRAP

Pretty sure

any logical arguement presented in a UNC vs UK debate would have to end up favoring UNC. I would be interested in seeing the arguments against that…I am very tempted to walk into this trap…lol

and FTR

it is 7 > 5

but at least UNC has won a couple in the past decade…UK has slowly slipped into that vast chasm known as irrelevance in college basketball. They have joined the likes of former greats like NCSU, Indiana, UM, ND and many others.

well then its 8 > 5. I don’t count pre-tourney championships, but I can if you do.

I’m not sure we’re quite irrelevant yet. We’re still able to get 5-star recruits and sell out games both at home and on the road, and we have a player of the year candidate. We’ve also got 2 NBA-caliber players right now, and we’ve chocked the NBA full of players winning championships: Derek Anderson, Tayshaun Prince, Rajon Rondo… I also remember when our program was hit with sanctions (thank you Eddie Sutton, can’t believe you have a court named after you) and we struggled mightily. So now is far from the worst time in our history. It also is just a matter of time before we’re back on top again.

Yes, I’m sorry if you can’t remember this far back, but UK has won the title twice in the last 15 years (1996, 1998). Coincidentally, the same number as UNC over the time period (1993, 2005). I’m not going to try and say UNC is not a great program, because it is and at least its not Duke, but until you surpass us in wins (probably early next season) we are still the winningest program in college basketball.

I'll give UK the props

on the talent that they can bring in. Prince is one of my favorite players in the Association. I just think that UK’s recent moves (running Smith out of town in favor of Billy-G) are potentially disasterous moves. Billy-G is a chump coach and doesnt deserve a classy program like UK.

And i did say the last decade, so i DO remember the UK championships, but i chose to be selective in my chosen time frame to best suite my point. :)

Enjoy the rest of this season as the Winningest Program. You are right in that UNC will take over that distinction, as well as (more than likely anyway) add another championship to our total.

Oh, and UNC has put its fair share of talent into the Association too…it is just too bad that they all end up on the same team! lol.

I am guessing a six or seven.

I'll go with a 6 seed

but wouldnt be surprised to see them one higher or lower.

Few is another one of those over-rated coaches.

For serious...

If Patty Mills would not have broke his hand at Gonzaga in January, St. Mary’s would have won that game. He torched them for 18 until he went down with like 3 minutes left in the 1st half.

St. Mary’s might sniff a victory at home

Last night, St. Mary’s lost by 2 without Patty. Both teams are legit, although I think SMC is better.
