Spend money or trade away young talent?

If you were FW this offseason. Would you spend the money to acquire assuming it's 7- 10 million a year on Adam Dunn or would you trade away some top ranked prospects to land Nick Swisher. I think that is is a known fact that we need a power hitter or at the very least a very good left fielder.  I personally would like to see us get Dunn, then If we not not competing for the division of the wild card, trade him before the deadline for some prospects, I'm sure someone would want him for the homestretch. We would of course have to sign him to a 2 year deal, thus making him an even more attractive player for the deadline....

Is this strictly a Dunn vs. Swisher question? Because your title is a little more vague than that. Just curious.

I guess I should be one to talk.

Not saying that I do…I was just wondering if your title question referred to those two, or just in general.

I’ve been on the Dunn bandwagon since day 1, so you should know my stance.

Depends which prospects we’re talking about here.

We would

have to pay Swisher about half of that anyways, so I would rather spend the money on Dunn, but it seems as if our budget is running low now that we have signed Lowe and Kawakami. All things equal, I would keep the prospects, especially our top ones.

thatll be annoying after he signs with another team…. son of a bitch it happened…how committed are you, we shall see?

Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Whatever happened to that “trade offer” that Frank Wren had on his desk a month ago? It is very curious what else, if anything, the Braves are planning.

by gondeee on Feb 11, 2009 12:53 PM EST reply actions

I think

if Wren is letting Abreu go and Dunn isn’t being considered, then Wren is going to blindside everyone with some sort of trade.

who knows.. your wish of Maggs might get granted.

Budget Crunch

I remember when gondeee mentioned the possibility of trading for Magglio Ordonez back in November, and I immediately jumped on that bandwagon. Right handed bat, nice power, hits to all fields, great OBP, and any defensive deficiencies would be minimized playing left field; seemed like the perfect fit for the Braves, assuming Atlanta wouldn’t have to give up top prospects to get him.

But the problem was, and still is, whether Detroit would be willing to trade him. The rumor was that the Tigers were trying to trim payroll, and Ordonez’s contract was more of the easier to move. In addition, at the beginning of the offseason, Atlanta had all this cash to spend, so absorbing Maggs contract wouldn’t have been an issue. Now that our remaining budget is only anywhere from $5 – $8 million, our ability to take on that large a deal no longer exists. Also, the market for corner outfielders is so depressed, Detroit no longer has an incentive to deal such a valuable player as Maggs.

As much as I’d love for Wren to pull this off, I don’t see it happening, at least not until the trade deadline in July.

Even if he meant the Tigers, what about the Kyle Farnsworth deal? That didn’t work out too well.

He got 2/4.6 and you know what, he was completely adequate…though his ERA was 3 times higher than it was in Atlanta

Bowman said we only have probably $5-6 million left. That would not have been enough for Abreu.
