Winter Meetings

The Winter Meetings start tomorrow and as everyone knows this is when the deals really start to come.  I would like everyone to make a prediction of something that they think will happen during the meetings.  I would like to know what everyone thinks about where some of the big free agents will sign or who might get traded during the meetings.

My predictions are:

John Lackey resigns with the Angels for 5 years $85M.

After Lackey signs the rumors for Lowe really start to pick up but nothing happens during the meetings.  At least one other free agent starter will sign somewhere.

Matt Holliday signs with the Angels for 5 years $90M.  He's doesn't get as much as many expected and soon after he signs Jason Bay goes back to the Red Sox and accepts their 4 year $60M offer.

Mike Gonzalez signs with the Red Sox for 2 years $14M.

I really don't think the Halladay gets dealt during the meetings but by the start of 2010 he will be somewhere else.

The Braves will be quiet during the meetings as they will have to wait until Lackey signs to get any legit offers from teams for Lowe and unless somebody makes an a big offer for Vazquez he isn't going anywhere.

You can agree or disagree with my predictions or make your own.

I think

the Yanks will somehow get Pujols too.

by BlueVol03 on Dec 6, 2009 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Well, by predicting it this way you’ll definitely get something right!

by ATLforlife on Dec 6, 2009 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

You forgot Greg Norton. It’s my understanding his services are available to highest bidder this offseason, and the Yanks will surely pounce on that opportunity.

I heard the Long Island Ducks were in the bidding for him.

I love their uniforms. The Ducks are no joke, they and the Newark Bears are like the Yankees and Red Sox of the Atlantic League. It’s insane the number of washed up former stars I saw with those teams.

I applied for a job with the Lancaster Barnstormers. Trey Hodges (I think it was Trey Hodges) was either with them last season, or the other local indy league team.

by bigjoe on Dec 7, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, that’d be cool if you got it. Yeah, I think Trey was with them. There are a number of ex-Braves running around that league. I keep thinking that in about three years we’re gonna see Andruw up there.

Hey, if you get promoted, watch out for this dude named Joe. No, sorry, I can’t be more specific, just…you know, watch out.

Actually I remembered, I saw Trey this year and talked with him. Haha, you know it was a good year when I can’t even remember who all I saw.

I work a stones throw away from the park. Actually got to sing the National Anthem at a game once, so that was bad ass. But there are a good amount of washed up guys like you said (Carl Everett, and Edgardo Alfonso most recently) alot of has-beens and never-weres. Its a good night out for the kids, If you can stomach the “quackers” that they give to everone. So basically 300 kids blowin these duck noise whistles. Awful

I thought hurricane season was over........

Carl Everett is batshit crazy but he is so freaking cool to fans.

A surprise team signs Bay – IE, not the Cards, Sox or Yanks

Holliday goes to the Yanks

Lackey resigns with the Angels

Lowe gets traded to the Yankees

"My team of nine guys who hit like Albert Pujols and never ever bunt just beat your team with one Shane Victorino 472 to 3."

by justincredubil02 on Dec 6, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions

Im not sure a surprise team is gonna have the money and win like the Sox or Yanks or Cards in order for Bay to sign with that surprise team.

I think Cards do all in their power to keep Holliday otherwise they lose stud Spec Wallace for basically a pick or 2 that may or may not ever develop, still he could leave but i see Cards really offerin alot to make sure he gets signed. I could be wrong on both but thats just my opinion.

Mariners and Orioles might have money to throw at Bay/Holliday. Orioles did charge hard after Tex last year, but not hard enough to outdo New York. Stranger things have happened…

I see the Cardinals really WANTING to retain Holliday, but with the knowledge that they have to extend Pujols soon, they have to have a reasonable limit on what they can pay Holliday. If they see a bidding war through to the bitter end their efforts to retain Carpenter and Wainwright down the road will get FUBARed real fast.

by J-Freak on Dec 7, 2009 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Aren’t the Mariners sorta the favorite to land Bay based on the latest greatest reports?

by fandave on Dec 7, 2009 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

I hear ya on Mariners and Orioles those would be good guesses on surprise teams for Bay its just didn’t he spend long enough in a losing atmosphere in Pit? I know Seattle has cash and could be good and Orioles are a young upcoming team so thats possible but i would just think he would rather not risk goin to a losing team no matter how bright their future is especially considering the Red Sox would LOVE to keep him but i could definately be wrong.

And your right about Holliday they cant give up the moon for him but i think if the Cards can make a close offer he might sign with them, so we will see.

My serious predictions:

Bay resigns with the Sox
Holiday signs with the Yankees
Lowe gets traded to the Angels
Gonzo goes to the Mets
Soriano goes to the Cardinals
Halladay goes to the Red Sox

man i dont know about Halladay to the Red Sox, the Red Sox will REALLY have to offer alot for the Jays to want to deal him to the Red Sox. I think Gonzo wants to go to a team that will use him to Close especially with Boras as his agent and Mets have K-Rod so not too sure about that one and like i said above i see Holliday signin back with Cards.

by rockybull on Dec 7, 2009 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

he wont go to the red Sox, bc Riccardi is gonna start the conversation with Casey Kelly and Westmoreland or Reddick and might even ask for Jose Iglesias

the BJs want too much for Halladay i really foresee him not being moved for a really long time

Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Odd picks i Guess

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/marlins-to-deal-lindstrom-at-meetings.html

Lindstrom to the Sox
Lackey to the O’s
Bay to the M’s
Williangham to the Mets

Also, dont trade javier vazquez.

by esadb on Dec 6, 2009 9:59 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think the Mariners have money to sign Bay since they signed Figgins.

I like the Lackey to Orioles pick.

really?

hmmm…maybe cause they got rid of the Ibanez contract last year and Bedard’s and Beltre’s contract this year? That makes sense now that I think about it

Seatles defense will be insane if they can resign Beltre.

by blitzerlover on Dec 6, 2009 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

I love how when the offseason started the Mets were rumored to be after Holliday and Lackey. I think it’s pretty clear now that the Mets simply don’t have the money to sign any big names this offseason.
I like the Lackey to the Orioles pick.

by jack dein on Dec 6, 2009 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

This wont all happen at the meetings, of course..

IRod to the Phillies
Orlando Hudson to the Nats
Derosa signs with the Cards
Tejada to the A’s
Greg Norton to the Mudhens
Holliday signs with the Sox
Ankiel to the Pirates
Soriano to the Angels

Also, dont trade javier vazquez.

Soriano to the Braves…possibly.

Although, in fairness, it’s Heyman, who makes up stuff about as often as the second hand advances, so this has to be taken with a bucketful of salt.

He’s not the only one that has reported this though.

by jack dein on Dec 6, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I saw the post on the main page AFTER posting that. My bad.

by J-Freak on Dec 6, 2009 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

Heyman is fed information from Boras. Soriano is not a Boras client, so theres no reason to believe this is fake.

by bigjoe on Dec 6, 2009 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

So… Boras made up the Halladay to Mets deal this summer? The one that asked for spare parts from the Mets that they supposedly turned down? how the hell is Boras connected to that?

by J-Freak on Dec 6, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Lackey to the M’s is the one that I’m sure on. The Angels haven’t really made a concerted effort to bring back either of their two FA’s, the M’s have the need, and they still have plenty of money to spend. If they could add Lackey, bring back Bedard on an incentive based one year deal, add a guy like Jack Cust to DH, and either Nick Johnson or Russ Branyan for 1B they’d be in a real nice position to compete in the AL West. Heck they could still get Beltre back too or possibly go after Jason Bay. Sure looks good for the M’s this off-season

by McCann's the Man on Dec 7, 2009 12:25 AM EST reply actions

Holliday to the Mets after he changes his name to Mateo Fiesta.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
