Not so bad
You have to think Wren considered the possibility that one of Sori/Gonzo might accept arb. Honestly, I’m of the opinion that we need Soriano to help offset the injury risk in our bullpen, even though he is a risk himself. I still think we can fit Cameron in under budget and there’s still the possibility we can move Lowe to free up some cash. His accepting arb would most likely necessitate us non-tendering Church and KJ though. Guess we’ll find out come monday!

I don’t like spending $18M on 3 relief pitchers.

not to mention that ALL of them are big injury risks.

I can understand that
In fact I don’t like it either, BUT what if it doesn’t hamstring us from filling our holes? It’s a big IF, but what if we still end up signing Cameron and LaRoche? I guess if the only drawback is that we have to non-tender Church and KJ then I can live with it.

I would rather live without Soriano than live without a bench or a decent 3/4th OFer.

Seriously. I think we should have waited until after the acceptance deadline just in case, cause I don’t think Saito had a ton of suitors.
I was leery of Saito to begin with. I was really, REALLY hoping we’d give the Calero camp a call before considering Takashi. I actually wouldn’t mind Soriano accepting arb if we didn’t have Saito, but him coming back now can screw us up royally in the even we can’t move Lowe or don’t find a suitable deal for Javy.
My thoughts exactly. We would have a lights-out back of the bullpen, but one that could potentially cost $23M, or in other words, the most expensive 7th, 8th and 9th innings in baseball.

If Soriano accepts arbitration, his agent is either a) very bad, b) very dumb, or c) very lazy. Either that or Soriano has us all fooled and wants nothing more than to play for the Atlanta Braves.
That said, I kind of hope he does. As much as it might prevent the Braves from addressing other needs, that would be an insanely good bullpen.

As long as we can move Derek Lowe, which given Frank Wren’s recent comments seems hopeful, this wouldn’t be a bad thing. Yes 8 million is pricey for a relief pitcher but it still leaves room to grab Cameron at 8 per and say Carlos Delgado on an incentive based deal. Just one possibility out of many

My plan
If Soriano accepts arb, then:
1. Dump Lowe on the first taker.
2. Non tender Church and KJ
3. Sign Cameron, I’m projecting around 6 mil
4. Sign Laroche to 2 yr 16 mil
That, if I am correct, would put us over budget by a couple of mil BUT it wouldn’t deplete our minor league system at all and would give us one helluva chance at a 2010 championship.
