Sign Johnny Damon
DOB has tweeted that Damon is interested in signing with the Braves. I say trade Lowe for a prospect(s) in a pure salary dump and sign Damon to somewhere around 2/20. He asked for 2/22 from yanks, after they offered 2/14, but they rejected. He is a great veteran player who is a proven winner. He can hit leadoff for us, or really anywhere considering he hit 24 hr's last year. This would still leave us 5-10 million for first base with which we could sign glaus, nady, derosa, etc. I think we missed out on Nick Johnson, but that signing has opened the door for us to move on Damon.

Didn’t you read the OP? Damon’s a proven winner. He can just sit in the dugout and have Heyward and Schafer rub his belly for luck when they come out on the field.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
lol, awesome

don’t really think there’s enough definitive data on him in LF to say that but I agree that he wouldn’t be my top choice. One or two years at 8 Million per would not be a bad deal.

His arm is pretty bad.

It’s not, but his arm is really, really bad. Like Juan Pierre bad.

it was so sad
to watch the world series and hear the announcers talk about how the phllies were going to get a lot of extra bases because of Damon and Swisher’s arms.
What do ya know. Ball hit down the Right Field line is a stand up triple. Ball hit to the left field gap. Runner scores from 1st standing.
Neither one of their arms are anything great especially Damon
by drumzalicious on Dec 19, 2009 3:42 AM EST up reply actions
Agreed
Yankee Stadium’s ridiculously short RF helped him out big time. I think you could only expect 15 homers tops from him in Atlanta. His defense blows, too. Although I like him as a hitter and he is great at getting on base, ten million a year is far too much. If we could get him for 6-7 a year I’d be okay with that.

His defense in LF was actually really good in 08, played about half the season there. In 09 it was awful but hard to say he sucks for sure imo

His UZR looks good, but I know from watching some games that he would misplay quite a few balls, and he doesn’t have a good arm, but he definitely has good range.
Hmmm…the more I think about it, the more I’m starting to like Damon though. In left field he could provide a lot of range; he’s definitely above average for that position. He is a good contact hitter while taking a lot of walks, he has some power…if we could sign him for a 2 year/18 million dollar contract and get Glaus, I would do it actually. I never thought I’d say it, but I think I want Damon.

THIS
He’s never hit more than 20 anywhere but New York, and was never considered much of a power threat. Most seasons he hits in the teens, and he’s hit as few as 9 since ‘98. He’s a career .355 OBP man, so we can stop all this talk of him leading off, there are options we already have (Yunel) who get on base at a better clip. (While we’re on that subject, he WOULD be an upgrade over McLouth and his career .342 OBP, but I’ve never been enamored of Nate as a leadoff man anyway, and Diaz has almost exactly Damon’s career OBP, I’d sooner see him leadoff than pay Damon to do it). Damon hits for a good average, but that’s about it. He doesn’t OBP significantly higher than the guys we already have to warrant investing in him as a leadoff man, he doesn’t steal much these days, and he’s not much of a power threat outside of Yankee Stadium.
Bottom line: he lacks additional skills beyond good contact numbers, and only plays mediocre to slightly-above-average D. That is NOT worth ten million a year, period. I wouldn’t pay more than 5 mil for that under any circumstances. Don’t let his Yankee-Stadium-inflated performance fool you into thinking he’s a commodity that he’s not.
what would we do with any OF once heyward and/or schafer come up. Damon stays in left, Heyward plays right when he comes up. Diaz is best pinch hitter in the league/fills in for days off etc. IMO schafer will be used as the centerpiece of a trade before all is said and done. (preferably with Freeman for AGon…wishful thinking) And if not, he gets his chance (again) to be more than a 4th of in 2012. Damon is the best FA OF left (unless we can miraculously sign one of the big 2). And yes, 10 mill a year is too much but he rejected 7 a year from NYY so thats not gonna happen. The main point is to make a move, and this is the best realistic move out there right now.
Sign Damon @ $5.5M, one year
In March.

DOB said in his blog
that the Braves hadn’t even contacted Roachy or his agent this off-season. Hmmm…
In Frank Wren I trust.
by Scott Coleman on Dec 18, 2009 6:25 PM EST up reply actions
I think Wren must be on the 450 minute plan w/ Verizon. Otherwise this whole “radio silence” thing (Smoltz, Glav, Lowe, LaRoche) makes no sense.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
it makes perfect sense to me
If the organization has no interest in a player they have no need to contact them.
We know that he wants a 3yr deal and we know the organization would prefer for Freeman’s path to start in 2011 be unblocked.
by drumzalicious on Dec 18, 2009 6:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
This argument goes against all those that think the Braves’ FO is gaining a bad reputation to FAs (according to the Lowe situation). That says the the Braves aren’t willing to sign LaRoche to a contract in hopes to move him sooner than the contract would be over… Which would imply that certainly was not the intention with Lowe. But I have the feeling I’m just beating a dead horse.
He might not be a horrible addition, but that’s way too much money for us to be locking in to a LFer with Heyward and Schafer coming up.
Freeman is further away, so we have more use for a 1B on a deal like that.
Damon is one of those players...
…if the price comes down enough, that’s cool. If it doesn’t, not so cool.
That lineup seemed to do pretty ok once Roachy showed up.

no Thanks
Damon needs to be for us what Garrett Anderson was last year. THE VERY last resort. Especially at the contract he’s demanding.

For what it's worth
Damon has never been worth less than $7 million except for 2003 (he was worth $6.8)
Who’s estimates are you using, out of curiosity? I haven’t heard a player value yet that seemed on the level. It seems like every guy that throws up a halfway decent season is valued at $15M plus by somebody, which makes no sense.
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=185&position=OF
Interesting that, according to their evaluation, he’s underperformed his salary from 02-09.

i think you have it backwards
where it says dollars is his value and salary is what he was paid. so he has actually played above his contract
by drumzalicious on Dec 19, 2009 3:44 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, and the total at the bottom under dollars (his value) is $87.9 and under salary (what he was paid) it’s $94.1, meaning he was paid 6.2 million more than he was worth for the last 8 years. That’s really not much, only about 775K a year, but still.
Now the last two years he’s overperformed, getting paid 26 million and being worth 30 million, which is also interesting.
Still, crap arm, crap defense, no pop outside of the new Yankee stadium, not worth the money to me.

I wouldn't mind Damon.
The thing is, he’s a Boras client, so I would guess he probably wants something in the 3 year, $30 million range. In that case, no way.
While everyone is
complaining about all the other teams getting the top of the line free agents, we are not going to get one unless we act. We are in a situation with the Lowe contract because we had two young pitchers emerge as stars, and Lowe didn’t pitch like we thought he would. But having stars emerge isn’t a bad thing. If Heyward and Schafer emerge then we find something to do. Trade Damon and eat some money if neccesary. This would be very doable if we have 2 $400k stars in our outfield. If we don’t offer more money than other teams, we will not get a FA except for another GA right before spring training
I’d rather have him than Holliday, because Holliday made an error in that one playoff game.
Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.
haha nice
yeah, his fielding % in the playoffs sucks! His playoff suckage is like Arod’s on steroids!

are you on crack?????? Johnny Damon!?!?! he is not cheap, he sucks, he sucks, he sucks, He had 24 Hr’s because he played in the yankee stadium 82 times and I bet that 22 Hr’s were in Yankee Stadium batting to the right field, he doesn’t have any arm… he just sucks

Like JackDein said, 17 of his 24 homers were in NY. And at least 15 of them don’t make it to the warning track in turner.

Honestly, If we’re looking for a leadoff hitter, I’d rather see them sign Scott Podsednik. At least Podsednik does not have any illusions to what type of ballplayer he is.
So Podsednik...
…knows that he sucks. If he doesn’t, then he has illusions as to what type of ballplayer he is. ;)
Actually, I’ve met Podsednik several times…he thinks he’s a freaking superstar…

I guess. Plenty of guys with super hot wives who aren’t total a-holes. Mark Kotsay is a pretty good example.

I'm already ducking under my desk
but I think Brandon Jones gets one more decent
trial this spring before we give up on him.
the tools are there to platoon in left, with exception
of HR’s. he can drvie the ball and can go after it.
has he made the adjustments to off speed stuff and
is the confidence there? dunno.
he is an outstanding athlete, cheap as dirt. FA or
trade focus on lB and seee how FF does in Gwinett.
A dude who's been mediocre for three seasons in AAA probably doesn't have the tools to do much of anything.

still ducking but
2008 MLB #70 top prospect; 2008 #4 ATL, 2008; 2006 #8 ATL;
2007 #4 ATL.
2007 IL: .300/.366OBP /.453SLG
2008 IL: .260(INJ)/.343OBP; /.405SLG
2009 IL: .281/.360OBP/.419SLG
brief appearances ATL ML .283.
Not great, simply feel he is not as yet a wash-out.
BJ is on the 40 man roster. Why was he protected.
No lose situation to give him some AB’s in ST.
If BJ is a late bloomer or another Brad Komminsk.
Yes, we're talking about a guy who hasn't even OPSed 800 in AAA for three years now.
