Around SBN: NFL Week One: Previews and Predictions for all 15 games

Kind of curious to see how the denizens of Talking Chop feels on the issue. Should it be expanded to the National League? Eliminated from the AL? Perhaps kept as is? What say you on the DH issue? I'd love to see MLB address this and find a way to make one set of rules for the game, instead of split between leagues. It's how it's always been my whole life, but like Tim Kurkjian said on ESPN this morning, something just doesn't seem right about having two sets of rules for the same game.

The DH...

…is the work of the devil.

I like it like it is. I makes the game more interesting. It throws off the AL when their pitchers have to bat in NL parks, and it throws off the NL because their rosters aren’t tailored to accomodate the 10th man. However, I do prefer the NLs way of doing it because it takes more strategy and planning to manage an NL team.

The DH is used in every level of the game. Even in the NL minor league teams. It is the most RiStupidiculous thing to have it in one league and not the other. I love the DH and I want it in the NL. Every Braves fan should want it, so Chipper can play for a few more years on the Braves. Bud, lets get it done before your overdue retirement.

Have it in both leagues or neither league…

Also, dont trade javier vazquez.

The DH ruins college ball.

Get rid of it everywhere. It makes for crappy baseball.

I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939

It sucks.

It’s not real baseball.

Bah. Humbug.

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." If you like the Yankees form of baseball – little strategy, all bats, minimal defense, then you should like the DH.

If you like real baseball with strategy and thinking involved, like me, then you hate the DH.

but can it be removed?...

the MLBPA has apparently found a nice way for aging hitters to continue getting big money, and for guys that can only play at the plate to get big money. Would they sacrifice the salaries?

by Mr. Sanchez on Dec 16, 2009 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

I hope the answer to those questions is “YES!”

Oh yeah,...

cause the MLBPA loves agreeing to things that eliminate a potential $10+ million annual salary from a dozen or more teams.

I know. It will never happen. It should though.

I don’t like the DH at all. I also think it gives the AL an advantage in inter-league games.

and WS games and AS games.

Not the AS game really, as you can just stick a Manny or Ryan Howard type in there at DH, but yes, I meant all the other inter-league match ups, including (especially) the WS.

by Lennox on Dec 16, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I was looking at it from the angle that the AL has far more power hitters in it to choose from to fill out their rosters.

Baseball players are supposed...

…to bat and play in the field. If a pitcher can’t hit, he should just be a wiff factory like the rest of them. Drop the DH everywhere.

This.

Baseball shouldn’t go around creating positions to mask players’ inadequacies.

Overheard in press box, from local reporter: 'If this Moore kid was any good, they'd be up 31-0 right now.'
