Lowe to the Angels
Well it hasn't happened yet but it seems like a probable location. Why? Well today the market officially materialized for FW to start negotiating a trade for Lowe. The Jays, M's, and Phil's have reportedly come to an agreement to send Halladay to the Phils and Cliff Lee to the Mariners.
Update: 4:21 ET - Heyman apologizes for a quick trigger finger and says that while the Ms are confirmed as the third team he is checking to verify they'll get Lee. (Even if Lee isn't included FW can shop Lowe to both divisional rival Mariners and Angels)
On top of this there is a tentative agreement between Lackey and the Boston Red Sox. According, to the reports Lackey will be moving across country for a 5 year 85 Million pay day.
The Angels seem to be the odd man out on pitching and FW has a history of working with the Halo's fine organization. In fact, FW might have the leverage in this negotiation as oppose to the Tex deal. Of course, the yankees might feel left out and try to counter with additional depth in their rotation with their recent departure of Wang. The Yankess have internal options but the Red Sox (Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Dice K, and Clay) seem to be much deeper than (CC, Burnett, Pettite, Hughes, Joba).
I say Lowe is gone before the end of the week. What do you say?

Who are we going to receive?

by Kobe:The Legend on Dec 14, 2009 4:21 PM EST reply actions
Utility Guy if we don’t eat much? Maicer Izturis
They were also willing to deal Aybar, Weaver, and Saunders for Halladay so would it be unreasonable to ask for Aybar for 2B? Move Prado to 1B and go for Broke on Bay or Holliday? Wishful thinking, Ill stop now :(
Izturis has great versatility and I would love to have him on our team… him or Aybar would be nice (Aybar is the better SS, so hes preferable).
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Morales or Juan Rivera
I say we agree to eat $10 total of Lowe’s Salary and maybe throw in a prospect.
No way Wren eats much of the contract
Lackey just signed for 5/85 million
Wolf signed 3/29.5 Million
I would have to assume that Lowe’s actually value is around 3/39 million. I don’t see us eating more than 2-3 million a year.
If we wanted to get Morales or Rivera...
…we would probably have to eat $10 million or more—-if those guys are even possible. If we get the Angels version of Jesse Chavez, we shouldn’t eat anything. It’s all a sliding scale.
Wonder if the Braves scouts still dont like Morales? They didn’t like him in the trade negotiations for Tex…
braves#1
To get Morales we would have to trade Jurjjens not Lowe. Come on the guy is a major force not someone you receive in a salary dump.

Depends on the market. If Lowe is the best out there, we can get as much as anyone is willing to pay for him.

As well as a run producing switch hitter who hit 34 homers last year while playing for the league minimum?
I would love to free up money by trading Lowe and add a prospect or two but i don’t see why the Angels would trade their premium bat to get Lowe and his 15 mln.
by Dutch Braves Fan on Dec 14, 2009 6:43 PM EST up reply actions
Desperate times call for desperate measures. If they think Lowe is going to be their difference maker, they will be willing to pay whatever it takes to get him.
That’s all I’m saying – the market will dictate the return for Lowe, not anything else. Right now, the market could hardly be better from an Atlanta perspective.

We only get anything decent in return for Lowe if multiple teams are involved, if it’s just the Angel’s it turns into a staring contest.
If we’re actually interested in any of the ‘big bats’ we need to move Lowe fairly quickly, the Angels, on the other hand, are pretty much set outside of getting a starter for the top of the rotation, so, as long as there’s no one else in on Lowe they can afford to play the waiting game much longer than we can.
There is no way
we get Morales. We should be aiming for Brandon Wood or Rivera but even then that seems like a long shot

I didn’t see the other post as something is up with my mac.
I think the Lackey deal is for a fair price. He gets 5 years $85M. he’s slightly better then Burnett who got 5 years $82.5M last year.
I agree
I think it also helps us move Lowe while eating less money. I think by using Wolf’s contract and Lackey’s contract as a basis you can easily argue a market value for low in the 12-13 million dollar range.
Yeah, but how about a freaking question mark? The title reads more like a statement.

Its funny
our rotation is still a bunch better than the Phillies even with Halladay. You know your rotation is special when you say something like that.
In Frank Wren I trust.
What is it going to look like
Halladay, Happ, Hamels, Kendrick, Blanton? With Moyer still in the bullpen/emergency starter.
I think Philly can like this deal for only one reason, Halladay is a dominate right handed pitcher and they were a little lefty heavy since getting Lee last summer. I do think if any Brown or Drabek is included in the deal, it’s not that much of a deal for Philly. No way would I have included either one of those two. They are like the watered down version Heyward and Hanson ; )

apparently. Blanton and Happ are involved in the deal too…they lose Lee, Blanton and Happ, or in other words, their 3 best SP from last season!

Drabek and Michael Taylor are going to Toronto. That’s a pretty big price to me.
Philly is getting back Phillipe Aumont (big young pitcher who I like a lot) and a couple other prospects I’ve never heard of from Seattle… then again, I’m not a huge minor league aficionado.
Aumont is no longer anything special.
He has already been converted to the bullpen because his arm couldn’t handle starting.
and it depends on who the other guys is, I’ve heard three names
Michael Saunders (trade would be good for Philly)
Carlos Truinfel (trade would be really good for Philly)
or Tyson Gillies (dont know much about him, but from what ive seen he’s not as good as the above guys)

by fatazfoot on Jan 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST
Yeah But...
Their hitting line up is WaY much better than the braves which FW will need to get a Holliday to make run in the division otherwise we will have to roll the dick with the sub 2 bats in the hope for a career year to win the division with them…we will have to see what FW will get in the impact bat!!
There is no reason imo
That Wren cannot make a legitimate offer to Holliday IF he can get rid of Lowe’s ENTIRE contract. He does that, I’ll be anticipating a big move on Wren’s part to upgrade the offense (whether that includes Holliday or not).
by SmithnCompany on Dec 14, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions
or we can win the WC and play the phillies in the NLCS…where we match up favorable bc of our power pitching (JAvy and Hanson) and solid bullpen and ability to manufacture runs (not saying we would win, butwe have a better chance of winnin a series with Philly than winning the division ..

I got an idea...
Let’s trade Vazquez to them instead and get a really good return. That was Vazquez’s best year ever, unlikely he’ll repeat it. Lowe is actually a lot better than his numbers said he was. He was worth about $12 Mil last year according to Fan Graphs. Therefore, I say we sell high on Vazquez and not sell low on Lowe.
Decent point but Lowe is actually getting worse. Look at the decrease in his pitch values. I don’t really have time to check right now.
I’ll take 3 years of our #4 winning 15 games and diminishing over 1 year of Vazquez and an even deeper minor league system

He could easily go on the market next year and beside Lee is the next best pitcher? He would probably het a 4 yr/55 mil contract.

The market for Holliday and Bay is still there
Yankees
Giants
Mets
Angels
Mariners
Braves
Cardinals
are all in the market for both of them.
i seriously doubt
we are in the mix for either. Even if someone is taking ALL of Lowe’s salary i dont see FW tying up our OF for that long in one player.
by drumzalicious on Dec 14, 2009 9:08 PM EST up reply actions
who on that list can afford them? Obviously the Yanks and Angels. I gotta think our chances of landing 1 of them are pretty good given that group of competitors…our finances are in as good or better shape as any of them.

My guess is that Bay goes to the Yankees as their DH/LF.
Holliday goes to the Angels.

I don’t think the Mariners, Cards, or Giants are really in contention. The Muts might be but I kind of doubt they’re willing to shell out enough money/years. Bay will probably wind up with the Yankees, although it might depend on the rumors of them cutting payroll. So it is us vs. the Angels for Holliday and the Angels now have Lowe’s contract (assumption). We already have 7 mil more room than last season and without the 15 it will be 23 – plenty to get Holliday and a cheaper 1B like Garko or Gomes.

You gotta think that we still have quite a few young pitchers coming up and IMO J.J. is the least likely to stick around with Boras as his agent.
by drumzalicious on Dec 14, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions
yeah but couldn't we shop J.J. for something better?
Like the center piece in a A Gon trade? J.J., Freeman, Schafer might get the deal done?
no
the whole point of it is that they are both under team control for at least 4 more years
by drumzalicious on Dec 14, 2009 9:17 PM EST up reply actions
Actually, I’d rather have Morales than A-Gon in that scenario (or any scenario, for that matter). He’s younger, cheaper, and was a switch-hitting run-producing high-AVG beast in his first full season. Not to take anything away from A-Gon, who is also a pile of talent, but if we’re giving up a guy like JJ, who is young cheap and effective, i’ll take Morales over A-Gon.
But you haven't figured in...
…the cost of getting Morales. That ain’t gonna be cheap either—-for all the reasons you like him.
Crap...
…I should read the whole set of posts before answering. Interesting question: JJ for Morales or JJ, Schafer, and Freeman for AGonz. Hell, I’d do either of them in a heatbeat.
I would do the first one in a flash, but I would be hesitant to pull the trigger on the 2nd one.

um
the reply thread is saying that it will take Jurrjens to get him and that most of us would be open to that trade
by drumzalicious on Dec 14, 2009 11:29 PM EST up reply actions
Lowe for Prospects
SS Rolando Gomez, 2B Alexia Amarista, 3B Freddy Sandoval and one other prospect for Lowe. We need some organizational depth in the infield. by doing this trade we will fix that up and can use free agency to fill our holes. RF – Jermaine Dye/Xavier Nady(cameron’s gone) 1B Troy Glaus/Aubrey Huff
Another option I would like, however I don’t see them doing it is a Lowe/Diory for Aybar deal.
Diory would be a good hitter for the Angels as he fits their organizational philosophy bent on versatility and slap hitting IFers…Diory was exposed last year, bc he wasnt ready and shouldnt have played in the majors but we had no other option.
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?
by fatazfoot on Jan 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST
I think Diory hit his potential but i do feel with some work, and like you said, in the right system he could be a nice fit and a favorable trade piece to others. Again though we should only let him go if we are getting an MLB ready player in return for the lone fact that past him and Brooks, there really isn’t much.
Morales....
Morales isn’t getting traded…he proved to be a legit middle of the order bat on the cheap….the Halos aren’t moving him. They might be willing to move Riveria if they think they can go after a big bat like Holliday or Bay…but they are not giving up Morales.
The braves could get creative and trade for a Aybar/Izturis and Mathis or Napoli…then turn them for a fit to the puzzle but that seems to complicated.
I would be happy if they could trade for Riviera and not eat TOO much of the contract.
I’d be happy with eating $5M or less…

I could deal with 5 million....
If the Braves could trade for Riveria and only eat 5 million….do they look at LaRoche with an inflated 2 year deal? Who do they go after for 1B? Riviera would be nice but he isn’t THAT impact bat…we would have to look at depth of the line up form 1-8 to produce.
no
i seriously doubt it. Prob Nady still at 1B

We are not going to get Morales ~
I think we will land Juan Rivera and a mid grade – AA prospect for D. Lowe str8 up and really that is all we can ask for. You cannot really say that we hold the cards b/c we have been wanting to dump D. Lowe for some time now and we just needed the market to officially develop which it has.
Rivera would provide us with a great young affordable OF and plus Morales would block Freeman so if you want Morales you would have to trade Freeman with D. Lowe b/c the Halos would want a replacement that is young, affordable and has alot of upside as does Morales.
Braves are high on Freeman so don’t look for us to get Morales period. Juan Rivera is a great fit for us and a platoon him with Diaz in LF when pitching warrants it and our OF would look great.
(CF) Mclouth
(LF) Diaz/Rivera
(RF) Heyward
extra OF: Schafer
Simply we would be set.
I would be fine with getting both Morales and Rivera but it is just not going to happen b/c the Braves would have to give up to many prospects to the Halos for both of these players but I am not dumb enough to say that I wouldn’t want Morales on this team with Rivera b/c we would easily become World Series champs.
One more thing no more posts on Holliday and Bay b/c we are out of the running; granted we will free up some cash to add a veteran one year stop gap 1B but we are out of the running for both of these guys folks and once D. Lowe is moved we are going to sign Vasquez to an contract extentsion.
I wouldn’t mind adding A. Huff as a one year stop gap 1B however but no crazy about adding Glaus. Huff could add 15-20 home runs a season and provide decent enough defense to get by and Glaus is nothing like he was in 2004-2008 when he peaked and plus I would think that Glaus would cost more b/c some teams believe that he could become the Glaus of old which he is not going to be. Huff is a decent signing that I would take always liked him as a player.
However who knows ? B/c FW always finds a way to make things happen.
by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Dec 14, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions
oh dear
3 reasons:
A: The Angels aren’t that dumb to give us a prospect along with Rivera.
2: Schafer wouldn’t be a 4th OF for us,
And D: THE ANGELS ARENT TRADING MORALES. Goodness.
$5 bucks to whoever gets the movie reference. It’s one of my all-time favorites.
In Frank Wren I trust.
I agree about Schafer....
If anyone wants him in the majors to start they season they don’t want to see him succeed. He needs to go to Gwinnett and hit the cover off the ball for about 250 ABs. If he does that he might earn a promotion to ATL to help fill out for an injury…or prove valuable as a trade chip.
Heyward is going to have the RF job outright.
Bobby Cox has even said it himself; Heyward is going to be given every opportunity to get the RF job out of spring training. I guess I did jump the gun on the Schafer idea more than likely he does start the year at AAA.
So I guess Diaz is our lone 4th OF which hey he was outside of Mclouth our best OF last season.

Good point calibers I guess Diaz & Infante are going to be our key OF backups this season and really their is nothing wrong with that. Still believe that Heyward has the RF job should he stay healthy and be at all decent in Cox eye.
Go Braves and I don’t care even if the Philles get Halladay and lock him up we still have the best rotation and bullpen in the NL East.

With a possible trade with the Angels coming up I reviewed their minor league system and while it’s got a some good pitching I would rather upgrade our position player depth.
If I was Wren I would call the Angels first thing tomorrow and really sell Lowe to them. I would offer Lowe for either Wood and Freedy Sandoval or Rivera and Chris Pettit. I’m not saying those are fair offers but if you catch the Angels in panic mode tomorrow they may make a bad decision. I would also leave open the door that we would send some money along.
Yup…exactly the type of deal that I was alluding to in an earlier thread today – the market for Lowe is as big as the Angels deem it to be. After today’s events, I gotta think that they are almost desperate to do whatever it takes to get Lowe right now.

Definitely.
They have a big pitching void to fix, and the prime options are all off the table. While like Charmin said, the M’s might still have a shot at trading for Lowe, I think the Angels are gonna get him. Frank should know that the Angels are pretty desperate and capitalize soon.
Any deal that gets us Wood has my love.
The problem is that they know we're as desperate as they are.
It is sort of the dilemna. They need him, they know we need to move him. It puts us both in the same position. If we could get another serious suitor or two (Mets?) we would be in the driver’s seat. Right now, nobody is.
I certainly think the Angels NEED Lowe. Their major holes to fill are now in the starting rotation. They are one of the few teams out there that can afford to take on Lowe’s salary. I also think the Angels front office is a good one, and the Braves won’t fleece them like they would the Tigers.
Fact remains, the Braves need to make a move. The chips are starting to fall, and when they fall, they can fall quickly.
Is there a possibility to get Nelson Cruz in a trade with Lowe?

If not, we can get Brandon Wood and Juan Rivera for Lowe and another player and sign Glaus or Delgado in the free agent market

um
i dont think we can get both.
I would love to get Brandon Wood. He is someone who i feel would be great at 1B for us and when Chip retires he can slide over to 3B and Freeman play 1B.
To get both i believe we would have had to give them someone like KJ who has been non-tendered. Maybe a Minor League pitcher
