Troy Glaus at 1st base?

Not sure if anybody has talked about this yet, but I just noticed earlier today on MLBTR that Glaus wanted a corner infield position.  I'm sure that he would come quite cheap w/incentives.  He has a horrible 2009 because of injury but had a very productive 2008.  Has anybody heard anything about the Braves looking at him? With LaRoche apparently wanting 10.5 million per year for 3 years it seems that we are certainly out of the running for his services.

Glaus is much of an injury question for me.

The same report says he offered all 30 teams his medical record and his latest physical.

I’m a little wary of the guy, but he could prove to be one of the best risk/reward players next season. He can flat out rake if he’s capable of holding a bat.

How bout Ryan Garko?

He will be ultra cheap and he can really hit.

by KC Ryan on Dec 14, 2009 5:35 PM EST reply actions

Garko would be great as a bench bat

I think we could sign either he or Gomes and pair them with a good situational first baseman who can hit right-handed pitching. Both of those guys kill lefties.

AMEN…… Garko will be great off the bench getting a start now and then at 1st and he has played corner outfield during his career.

And their couth, too...

I’ve only been saying go after Glaus if the medical report checks out since September, guy is the third best hitter (behind bay and holliday) on the FA market if healthy

by McCann's the Man on Dec 14, 2009 8:09 PM EST reply actions

Go after both if the price is right...

Glaus would man 1B. If he gets hurt you put Garko in. If he is healthy Garko can play a little LF, 1B, and be our 3rd catcher.

I would think that one/both of these guys could be had on the cheap and enable the Braves to go after another bat in the OF. If Glaus is healthy he would provide a good #4 hitter that is RH.

Does anyone know if he can even play some 3B right now?

by calbers on Dec 14, 2009 10:44 PM EST reply actions

I think I heard that he can’t but I have no evidence of that. What injury is he coming off of? Was it arm/wrist surgery?

by acie4mvp on Dec 14, 2009 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Correct.

He also had back issues throughout his rehab.

I’d prefer the Braves just re-sign Laroche. 3 years/$30 million sounds fine to me. They can always trade him after the 2nd year if Freeman is ready.

by redwards95 on Dec 15, 2009 9:27 AM EST reply actions

I like it.

Considerable upside, unlike some of the other options out there, like Nady.

Really?

There’s no upside in a guy who OPSed over .900 for four months the last time he was in the NL?

Glaus

I would love the Glaus idea, and he should come cheap. I would be scared to have him with no backup plan. I would think a healthy Glaus is better than any other option, and much cheaper than Laroche.

by wcubmac on Dec 15, 2009 2:15 PM EST reply actions

If we go the Glaus route...

…we would probably want to have a guy like Nady as well, since he can play OF and 1B. Swisher would work here, too.

by cavebird on Dec 15, 2009 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

I would like them to sign Glaus to a 2 year deal, Nady to a one year deal. They really could go after Delgado and Nady as a combo as well.
