What if?
What happens if the the Braves get a productive bat for Derek Lowe someone like Cameron and get Garrett Atkins in the free agent since the Rockies non-tendered him today. We can also get Johnny Gomes to serve as a great bench player. Garrett Atkins stats this year were awful but he has a history of good batting performances through seasons. Johnny Gomes is a perfect bench player for us with good power and could fill in if someone needs a rest or someone is injured in the outfield

He's making fun of you because your post centers on what is commonly referred to as "rosterbation" ...
The general rule around here is that you should only rosterbate in the rosterbation thread.
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

You're all silly
Barring a big trade splash, which Wren has said is becoming increasingly unlikely, Cameron/LaRoche is the best possible FA outcome. If we shoot for LaRoche and miss, Glaus is the next best option. Nady and Cust are terrible ideas. Period.
by J-Freak on Dec 12, 2009 8:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think Delgado would rank...
…above Glaus in that scenario, but otherwise I would agree—-I’d put Glaus third on the first baseman wish-list. I am not as down on Nady, he could be a cheap decent bench-fourth OF option. I agree Cust is fairly poor—-he’s a DH. I also think Atkins is a terrible option; his career numbers outside of Coors are very poor.

Since no one has brought it up yet…. I think Johnny Gomes is a wonderful answer to almsot any question involving our OF.
well i actually just looked up his defensive nbrs… so maybe not… but he could be a solid bench bat like hte Reds used him last year.. spot starting and such… the problem is he is right handed and so is Diaz and Diaz is slightly better (but Gomes has better power)

I love his bat. As you mention, however, his glove is horrible. He will probably look for a DH role in the AL, but there are plenty of those options available.

CL – Billy Wagner – 6.75M
Total – 86,016,100
That is with Nady’s, Huff’s and Garko’s contracts from last year. I would figure each would be cheaper this year. either way this is much less than our $96M from last season. Huff would need to sign a 1yr deal, too. I’m not sure if that could happen, maybe if we give him alittle more than he’s offered elsewhere.Trade Lowe for prospects, maybe for some organizational depth up the middle. This would also allow us to use some of that money to pay part of his contract.
Jack Cust is als0 available but expected to resign with the A’s. I don’t know if he would want a role off the bench. I wouldn’t want him starting with his league leading strikeouts the last three years but he made less than $3M last year and for 3 straight years has had over 25 HR.
Gomes would be nice to have off the bench but i think Garko is a better fit. Garko is a career .313 hitter against lefties and a .994 fielding%, both better than Gomes.
I think Heyward should be a summer call-up too. With this roster, it would allow us alot of options to make way for that. Diaz or Nady could be dealt or Huff could be dealt and Nady moved to first.

With Huff, he provides really good versatility as he can play 3B/1B/ or OF(although he hasnt played OF since 06, but he wasnt horrible he wasnt good either but)…and he wont cost 8M.. Garko will cost more than 425K or else the Indains would have kept him… and Nady isnt any good.
im not opposed to the Huff idea as an option #4 or something. but ur right we should get more than those three for Lowe’s 15M, the nice thing is we would still have around 8M to play with and get somehting else under that scenario… someone perhaps named Michael Cameron. (HAHA he strikes again)… or sub out Nady for Gomes (ya im driving the Gomes bandwagon, straight to hell)

As a salary dump though, it works...
considering the Brewers are still paying much of the one year remaining on his deal. I certainly wouldn’t want him in the starting lineup, but as the second super ut off the bench behind Infante, it’s not bad imo.
by Mr. Sanchez on Dec 13, 2009 10:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Let's face it...
…if they take Lowe’s full salary and don’t saddle us with more than $1-2 million in salary in return, we’ll take anything and it will be a good trade.
by cavebird on Dec 14, 2009 9:16 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And I think Hall...
has the versatility to be an ideal player off the bench. He’s not a starter for a reason, but he’s not much more than a step below and like Infante that can be extremely useful when combined with the ability to play 3-4+ positions in the field. Then again, that would probably be why the Mariners would prefer to keep him.

Gomes wouldn’t be bad either, I just like Garko more. Neither to start however. Either way i think both would fit a nice role off the bench. But still we are probably going to have to pay some of Lowe’s contract. I don’t know what will be left to pay Huff, Garko/Gomes and something else. If not Nady who? I’m not a big believer in Cameron. Maybe he would work. Cust? I know the K rate is way too high, but he quietly has had 25+ HR each of the last three years.

how can u possibly like Nady more than Cameron… i refuse to acknowledge this line of thinking…
I can at least understand Garko> GOmes (although i disagree, bc Gomes has more power and better ability to take pitches).
and Cust is a horrible idea and that been established, if u think otherwise imagine Dunn with less power and worse defense (if thats possible).
Ive already states ad nausem that Cameron and Glaus/LaRoche would make use a very dangerous team… and then with Gomes off the bench we would be in good shape and we have the money to make that happen (I think)

Ok take Nady out then. I’m still saying LaRoche wants more than 1 yr and I think that’s what there going to give up so that’s why I’m saying Huff.
Huff + Cameron + Garko/Gomes…. what would that cost. You have to throw in theres a good chance we can’t dump all of Lowe’s salary.
by JKowalek on Dec 13, 2009 3:35 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Huff we could get for about 5-6M i think his value isnt that high, IMHO and i dont think theres a lot of upside in that play, we are really banking on Heyward or Schafer doing something by signing Huff. ALthough like i mentioned earlier i like Huff’s versatility, which is rare for a 1B… and thats part of the reason i dont like Garko, he can only play 1B as far as we know.
also, try to use the reply button, it makes it easier to follow for others, its easy now that its the end of the thread, but still for future reference.

You may have convinced me on Cameron or Dye over Nady but i still like Garko. Either of them would be nice. It all depends on how much of Lowe’s salary we have to eat up.

I think Garko or Gomes depends on how is playign first… if its Huff (or Glaus)then Id rather have Garko bc of his ability to play 1B and Huff ability to play three positions. If its LaRoche or delgado, i want GOmes, bc of his ability to play the OF and Delgado orLaRoche are solid 1B.

Per MLBTR, he is seeking 3 years, $31 million. I doubt he gets that, so it will take a while with him—-that could work, he could still be around after we move Lowe.

so yes, he is by far the best 1B on the market considering age, production, defense, etc.
by Mr. Sanchez on Dec 13, 2009 10:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
But it is a weak 1B market.
LaRoche is the best on it—-Delgado would be above if not for the hip. But he has the hip, so he is second. Maybe LaRoche gets it, maybe he doesn’t. Hard to tell right now——the problem for LaRoche is that most of the big dollar teams don’t need a 1B, that depresses the whole market.
by cavebird on Dec 13, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the way i look at it… if Laroche gives us a hometwon discount, we’ll pay about what he’s worth, bc his value is artifically high bc of the market…ur right that the big spenders not needing a 1B may hurt his value, but that might not be true, depeing on what happens in Bos (LaRoche is probably their 4th option at this point, but still)

And if not for Jordan Schafer's wrist...
we see him all year. Delgado has the injuries, so whether he’d be above LaRoche or not without them is irrelevant. He has them, so he’s not. I guess we can all see how healthy he is now when he starts playing in Puerto Rico before the end of the year.

My point that Delgado would be better...
…without the injury was just to demonstrate why he is not that far behind LaRoche even with the injury issue. That is all. And, yes, Delgado’s winter league play could have a lot to do with the kind of deal he gets.

Delgado’s playing winter ball???

His bat isn't the question...
it’s his ability to move around the bag at 1B.
Anyone else of interest playing this year?

I was just going on what...
…Mr. Sanchez said. It makes perfect sense given the circumstances. He could make himself serious coin by showing he is healthy.

See here...
And here from Thursday…

Gracias…
Is this common? I don’t think I can recall name-brand players actually playing winter ball before.
Does anyone know of other recognizable names that played winterball to increase their value?

I believe there’s been several of the Hispanic players that go back to their home country and play in winter leagues.

Yeah...
Pretty sure Pedro did it last year, either in Puerto Rico or the Dominican. Remember Bobby’s comment about Prado playing RF when he went back to Venezuela? I think Pudge played last year in attempt to show his stuff to interested clubs. I think Vlad Guerrero and others have played for a winter league team back home when healthy.

Yeah, I knew that fringe 4-A type players (Like Prado AT THE TIME) did it…I think Blanco did it too….but I didn’t know that players like Pudge or Carlos Delgado did it.

Miguel Tejada has played winter ball every year of his career. A lot of the regular/star players who live in those winter ball countries play there. They might not play full seasons but they play. It’s a national pride thing, you play to stay in shape and to show appreciation for your countrymen.

They let Garko play some 1B this year...
And he’s played C as recently as ‘06 in the minors. He’d probably be a better bet there than Diaz as the emergency guy if that’s relevant.

I don't see why he's not a more popular option around here.
He’s got an upside, especially in a limited role, and sure isn’t going to break the bank.
