Norton's Replacement

MLBTR had that Ross Gload was down to the Braves and the Phillies and we didn't get him. So who is next in line to fill out the bench with Ross and Omar? The Royal's just released Mike Jacobs. He made over 3 millions last year but after having a down year we may be able to pick him up at a lower cost to fill the power role off the bench. He hit 19 HR last season while slugging .401. I'm not sure if he would want a backup role, however its worth a shot to consider. Again, anyone really is an upgrade over Norton. The only downside is that he bats lefty.

Brooks Conrad could surely provide more production than Norton did for the major league minimum. He would be my choice.

No. Not a power bat off the bench…just a bat off the bench. Key phrase here is “off the bench”.

Prado is a starting second baseman, no matter how you slice it. I think without any kind of chip to brush off his shoulder, he will only be better in 2010.

Off the bench ~ Conrad, Ross, Infante……….No-Norton makes me smile.

I like Barbaro but i don’t know if i want him to be anything more then a pinch hitter. I’d feel much better with Jacobs in there giving days off and covering an injury than him. I’d rather see them try to send him off to be a DH somewhere in the AL. Don’t get me wrong though i’d take Barbaro over Norton any day. And if using him saves us money that they spend for another need, i’m all for it.

You and I often disagree, but we both like KJ. I just don’t think there’s much of a chance he goes in to ST as a Brave. For me the writing was on the wall the moment we DFA’d Church.

Wren and Cox likely both view Prado as the starter right now, and KJ is too expensive for a backup, so Wren will find a trade and that’ll be that.

Only way he stays is if we just don’t find a legit 1B to add, in which case we end up with Prado and KJ both on that side of the infield going in to ST.

i still like Jacobs but i wouldn’t mind seeing Hinske either. Depends on the price. still alot of the other guys named either don’t have the pop or can’t be trusted to hold his own in the field. The answer is abs. not solved internally with CoJo or Barbaro. Why would CoJo come up and ride the pine to get an AB every other game or so?

Kody was only suggested as a joke.

He obviously will be in AA this year—-still tremendous power, but a ton of stuff he needs to work on. (i.e. making contact). Barbaro would be cheap and not great, I doubt we go with him—-we can find a AAAA guy for cheap in lots of places.

by Kobe:The Legend on Dec 13, 2009 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Bench

A couple points….
1) You don’t want Jacobs. His power is nullified in a PH role in the fact that he makes terrible contact and doesn’t walk. He doesn’t even work the count very well from what I recall (I personally believe that working the count …seeing a lot of pitches…and adding to the pitch count late in a game is an undervalued skill in a PH). Plus he is a butcher in the field.

2) Garko would be great to have as reserve (though I fear he will be too expensive). He can play 1B- somewhat…play LF-somewhat and could even catch in an emergency…which might allow us to hit Ross more if Garko is on the field elsewhere. I also like the previously mentioned idea of a platoon partner in Garko. He could be a real value as a RH compliment to a Blalock or LaRoche.

3) Kelly Johnson looks like he could be non-tendered….I think in the long run this will haunt us. I understand WHY they have to do it…but I think it will ultimiately be a mistake. Prado has done well…but a healthy KJ with his swing right is a better player and has better upside then Prado. To me Prado is the # 1 guy off the bench and could start if needed. However, even if KJ is relegated to a bench role…would that be so bad? He can play 2B…he can play 3B (or at least he did a bit in the minors)…he can play LF…and he played CF in AAA. I would have preferred the Braves ask him to play in winter ball and play some 3B and some CF. He can handle that then he becomes a REALLY good utility guy who can help cover for Chipper and McClouth who both have a history of injury.

4) Other names to throw out there are bench/PH guys….
Loretta
Quinlan
Hairston
Carroll

by calbers on Dec 12, 2009 2:10 PM EST reply actions

I looked at Quinlan too, but he seems pretty terrible. Poor power, power contact skills, and poor defensively.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

by Yakker on Dec 12, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Quinlan

I understand…if you look at his minor league numbers and the numbers when he has gotten more ABs they look better. Quinlan would benefit from the national league where he woudl see more ABs. He isn’ t good anywhere…but has played the IF and OF corners previously.

by calbers on Dec 12, 2009 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

Carroll would duplicate what we already have in Infante except that he is older and has less versatility and less pop.

Which is why I wouldn’t want to pay him a ton of money. But pretty much any team needs two good backup infielders.

by fandave on Dec 13, 2009 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

If we need a quality defensive SS...

…that hits—-we won’t find one; if you can do both, you’ll be starting somewhere. If we want one that can’t hit, well, we have Diory. A decent hitting, good fielding back-up SS is a luxury that I don’t know if anyone has.

You can find those.

Guys who can pretend to play short and hit a bit. But, for obvious, reasons, guys who can field short well and hit are going to be starting for somebody.

by cavebird on Dec 14, 2009 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

and I suppose they will give Diory another chance to show that he can hit, even a little.
To me, however, there is a lot of room between .141/ .198/ .212 and decent hitting / luxury territory.

by fandave on Dec 14, 2009 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

His minor league stats...

seem like he’d be a better hitter than he showed in Atlanta last year.

by Mr. Sanchez on Dec 14, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

I should hope so. I think Hellen Keller could have done a little better than Diory, just by swinging at everything…eventually, something would fall, right?

Diory was just horrible. Talk about an automatic out! It is sad when I would prefer Lowe or Vaz to hit instead of D-Hern!

Again...

see his minor league stats. They seem to indicate a better hitter than what we saw. Considering Garrett Atkins from 8 years ago, Hernandez hitting slightly over .300 the last 3 years in AA and AAA seems kind of pertinent.
