Ben Badler Tweets us this note...
...about Mike Minor starting in the AFL Rising Stars game this Saturday. The game will be televised at 8pm on the MLB Network. For most of us this will be our first chance to watch our top draft pick pitch.

I hope he's better this time than he was when I saw him pitch
I’d also like to see him pitch from the windup a little more. The night I saw him pitch, runners were always on base and Minor was throwing from the stretch most of the night.

Dave O'brien talked with some scouts
That had this to say about Minor’s outing today.
“Talked to a couple of scouts who said they really liked Minor, that he’s a polished guy with a plus-changeup, 91-92 fastball today, good breaking ball and slider, and great mound presence. Talked to a Rays scout, said they drafted him out of high school and that he’s come a long way since then.
Both scouts I talked to said Braves got a good pick at that spot in the draft, that Minor is a solid pitcher, low-risk guy who knows how to pitch and has good stuff."

I don't recall anyone
saying that he was a bust but most people, including myself, want a guy with higher upside with the #7 pick i.e. Matzek, Purke, Miller, Green and so on.

Seems like Minor's got a pretty good upside...
lefty with 4 quality pitches, “great mound presence” and good command, those types can do pretty well.

A lot of people here were for sure freaking the out and calling the draft a bust after Minor was picked. Wanting a pick with more “upside” is one thing, but some people here were definitely losing their shit over the Minor pick. (I’m pretty sure cbwilk can vouch for me on this.)
And losing your shit over an unproven HS arm not being taken is silly. You know what Baseball Prospectus and Keith Law feed you. Settle down and let’s see how Minor plays out.

Yeah, there were a ton of people about to slit their wrists on draft day. Nevermind that the success rate for high school arms compared to college arms is ridiculously low.

My problem
Was Minor ceiling is as a #3, I’d far rather gamble on a high upside HS arm at #7 rather than a low upside “safe” college guy. Again the pick is done and over with and I support any guy who wears a Braves uni.

How do you know that's accurate?...
Greg Maddux had an awful projection out of high school. Jair Jurrjens had a supposed “ceiling” of back end of the rotation. Just cause scouts claim a guys “ceiling” is something doesn’t actually make it so. I bet Brien Taylor had a much higher “ceiling” than Greg Maddux or Jair Jurrjens or Tommy Hanson among countless others, how did that turn out? Now that he’s actually started to play professional baseball, Mike Minor seems to have a pretty high ceiling.
As I say above, 4 quality pitches, good composure on the mound, good command, lefty with a fastball that can reach 93 or so, those type of pitchers can be pretty successful in the bigs, in spite of those high ceilings for a high school project.

Is he going to be able to hit 91-93 for a full season? I’ve heard mixed velocity reports about Minor.

Very excited about this news...
…as I’ll be at the game Saturday. My first AFL trip should be a good one. Sad I won’t see Heyward and/or Stanton, but it’ll be warmer than Vermont.
If the broadcast pans in on a handsome blonde 16 month old boy in the crowd sitting with a greying long haired guy with a Youk-ish goatee (get your own facial hair style Youk!) wave and say hi to my son and I. :)

No, I live in Vermont. My wife, son and I will be coming out Friday and leaving Wednesday morning. I’ll get to see the Saguaros Friday night and Tuesday night, and we’ll hit the Rising Stars game as well. Say hi if you see us.
Not many Braves fans up this way either. It’s like ESPN up here, no one knows there are teams outside of New York and boston (not capitalized on purpose).
