Your first memory of the Atlanta Braves

I'm sure everyone here has heard it before: "Where where you when JFK was assassinated?" or "Where were you when 9/11 happened?"  well, "What is your first memory of the Atlanta Braves?"  I was sitting there in class the other day, bored out of my mind as usual, and I was thinking of my very first memories of the Atlanta Braves. For me, there's always one that sticks out in my mind. It's just one of those things I'll never forget.

Star-divide

Growing up in Missouri, baseball was everything. You were either a fan of the Cardinals or the Royals Cardinals. For me, however, I was an odd kid. I thought it was stupid to root for a team with a red bird as the mascot.  That, and everyone I knew was a Cardinals fan. I guess I just wanted to be different.  My very major league baseball game was at Busch Stadium with my dad. The Cards were playing the Braves.  As we hiked up to the very top of the nosebleeds, I remember looking back at the scoreboard and seeing the name "Smoltz". Being 6 or 7, I had absolutely no idea what this weird word was.  Z's were never used in words! Surely, this had to be a misprint. It just happens (as my dad tells me) that Smoltzy went on to strike out 11 Cardinals in a Braves win. From that day on, I was a Braves fan. On my way out of the stadium, I remember seeing a vender on the street selling a Braves cap. My dad bought it for me, and the bond with the Atlanta Braves had officially begun.

Wanna know what the best part of this story is? It just so happens that this year was 1996. I've never seen the Braves win a World Series championship.  Like all of us, we've all seen the Braves have their peaks and valleys, but I always feel like I brought the Braves bad luck. I guess we'll just have to win the whole damn thing in 2010 so i don't feel so bad.   :)

So, what is your first memory of the Atlanta Braves? Oh, and a happy Veterans Day to any of you who served our country. It's definately appreciated.

1991 World Series against the Twins…I was a wee lad at the time (6 years old), but I remember a couple of things from that one – Bream not scoring in the greatest World Series game ever played, and the greatest pitching of a World Series game ever – Black Jack Morris vs John Smoltz, and each pitcher throws a complete game shutout…are you kidding me???

1992 is memorable for me too…for some reason, I just remember Joe Carter and Kelly Gruber – why on earth I remember Kelly Gruber I have no idea.

I don’t have a specific memory but I know they were always on growing up. I was born in 81 so I remember watching Dale Murphy and Bobby Horner and Glenn Hubbard and seeing guys like Gant and Lemke make their debuts. And I could never remember any of the pitchers’ names for some reason. I remember the first two Starting Lineup figures I ever had were Ken Griffey Sr. and Ozzie Virgil and I wanted them because they were Braves but even then I was like “Why do these guys have Starting Lineups? They suck.”

I don’t have any specific memories besides them always being on tv when I was younger. However, what memory I do have was of my first Braves game not long after Smoltz became a closer. It was against the then-Expos and I was sitting on the third base side. I vividly remember “Thunderstruck” blaring throughout the Ted and Smoltz making the Expos look foolish on what the stadium gun read as 100MPH fastballs.

I remember when Chipper first came up. I remember the announcers gushing over him and I instantly fell in love with him. I don’t necessarily have any specific memories of the games, but I also remember the first time I heard Chipper talk and I was convinced that someone else was talking while he was moving his lips because no one with the name “Chipper” would have a voice so deep.

Early 90's stuff.

I remember vaguely the series with the Twins. I used to be a huge Jeff Blauser fan. I thought he was the man. I liked Lemke a lot too. One of the best memories is the goosebumps I got when I saw Grissom catch the last out of the 95 series with the Indians. Man, those were the good days. I’ll never forget that feeling. Being so young (9 at the time) I was such a big fan it felt like I had one the World Series too. Very awesome.

1998

well this isnt my first memory but this one stands out in my head. It was the 1998 NLCS against San Diego we were down three games to one and behind by 2 in game 5, Kevin Brown comes in to face Tucker, and Tucker drills a 3 run bomb to give us the lead. My whole family are braves fans and we were all watching the game going nuts giving each other high fives and everything. I wish I could find video of that but I never could

When Sid Slid of coarse....

I really wasnt into sports at all at that point, 8 yrs old. Pretty much the storybook scenario, and I instantly fell in love. I still get goosebumps watching/hearing that play. Skip pretty much sold me on the Braves

My first memory

wasn’t a game or a player but merchandise brought back from Atlanta when my uncle’s family returned from a game they attended. It was a Cheif Nocahoma bobblehead & a mininature bat w/Atlanta Braves engraved in it. They also brought back a program. It had to be the early 70’s because of the little “a” logo and the feather. I’ve been sold since.

Wednesday, October 4, 1995

I didn’t give a rip about baseball until this past April, but growing up in Alabama, Braves merch and apparel was a frequent sight. My family quasi-followed baseball and were rather excited when the Braves made it to the NLCS that year. Let’s see…I would have been ten at the time.

On October 4, Hurricane Opal made landfall in north Florida, but we were already feeling the effects of the storm — namely, high winds and torrential rains. Through the storm, we alternated between local news broadcasts and game 2, which was held in Denver. I remember pretty distinctly my family whooping it up after the last out — and the Braves’ victory — and, as though on cue, the power went out.

It stayed out for about three more days, and the next morning we learned Opal was a terrible disaster even for us, 300 miles inland. But those two memories will be forever linked in my brain.

I have no idea. That’s like asking when the first time you remember meeting your parents or something like that. Growing up, Braves on TBS was on all summer long.

I think the 95 series was the first time I actually got really into it. We were on a family vacation and I spent every night sprawled out on the bed in front of the TV.

I’m not sure about a memory, but we have a home video taken just before my third birthday in which I’m wearing my Braves hat backwards as a catcher would. My Dad asks me who I am, and I say “Damon”. He asks “Damon who?” and, because I couldn’t pronounce my "r"s, I said “Damon Bewwyhill”

Mat Gamel is way too cool for double consonants.

I don’t know which event came first, but my older brother having the Dale Murphy “Power Alley” poster in his room, and also in 7&8 year old baseball, my team was the Braves. Since that would have been 1987 and 88, our team reflected the current Braves teams, in that we were awful. In 7 year olds, our uniforms were some ugly blue and navy blend that didn’t really reflect the Braves unforms. But in 88, our uniforms changed along with the Braves, as that was the year they went to the now classic whites with red script and the tomahawk. I remember there was a mixup with the hats, and we were originally given these beautiful top and pants, but with a blue trucker hat with a block B. I was so disapointed, but it turns out we had been mistakingly given the hats of the “Blue sox” (all the t-ball teams were just different colors of Sox). Once the mistake was corrected, we were given THE HAT. The red bill, the dark blue top, the script A. I was the proudest kid in the world.

I’m from Chicago, and remember when the Atlanta Braves were the Milwaukee Braves. Being a White Sox fan in a house full of Cubs fans, I can remember wanting them to beat the Cubs whenever they played. (I also remember when the Sox played some of their games in Milwaukee, but not terribly fondly.) As for Atlanta, I remember Opening Day 1988, when the Braves played the Cubs at Fulton County Stadium; I sat at field level on the third base side, and hoped for a Braves win (they didn’t win; I think that was the year that they went 56-106). I went to a lot of Braves games when they weren’t any good in ‘88-’90, but haven’t gone to many since…

66 was a long time ago...

My first Braves memory was from 1966. My dad took us to the first game in Fulton County Stadium…an exhibition game between Detroit and the Braves. I don’t remember who won, but have bee a Braves fan ever since. I now have 2 sons who are Braves fans…the second born in 1991. When the Braves didn’t make the playoffs after 15 appearances, he was shocked. I told him that I had watched them drop 3 to the Mets in 69 and 3 to the Cardinals in ‘82 and was thrilled when they finally won a playoff game in 1991! I’ve been a fan through many a drought… Needless to say I was happy when things turned around in the 90’s. I hope this year’s 2nd half momentum will carry over into 2010…and they’ll win it all. And, when Bobby hangs it up…Frank, I’m available!

A weird time to start loving the Braves....

In 1985, I was seven years old and completely in love with the Atlanta Braves, though I have no idea why. They were bad, but I think that was one of the attractions for a child. Any game, anytime, anyone could just walk right up to the best seats in the house and sit down. As a kid, I remember being amazed to be able to be so close to real people that I was watching on TV almost every night.

One particular game we arrvied very early (double header) to take part in the all day festivities that come with a 2-game show. Rick Mahler (one of the ugliest and coolest players to ever wear an Atlanta uniform) was shooting the shit with the umpires pre-game. Since he wasnt pitching, he was a little more casual than normal, sporting a pair of pink flops. My dad shouts out, “Hey Rick! Nice shoes!”. Rick replies, “These old things!” I know it’s not much, but it was a great day to be at the park. Dale Murphy homered his first 2 at-bats of the doubleheader before it got rained out in the 4th inning of the first game. I cried almost the whole way home, not because the game was rained out, but because my dad informed me that it was not a complete game, therefore Dale would not receive credit for his 2 dingers.

My opinion cant be wrong. It's my opinion. Those who don't like it can piss up a rope.

My 1st recollection of the Milwaukee Braves was 1965

It was October I think,I was in school anyway, Sandy Koufax was pitching at Dodger stadium, as was usual when Koufax pitched, the Braves lost. I remember they only scored 1 run,the Dodgers went on to win the W.S. that year. The next year my uncle Leo took me to several Dodger games and I remember Koufax and Don Drysdale (my uncle always tried to go when they pitched) beat the Atlanta Braves a couple of times. Not good memories for Braves fans, but were fond ones for me. They didn’t watch baseball at home so going to games was mostly the only way I’d get to see a game. I thought my uncle Leo was going to cry when Sandy Koufax retired. I was 12 in 65.

Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher

David Justice

Growing up in Indiana, I found myself without an identity. Baseball is my first love (for sports that is), and Indiana has no MLB teams. Growing up watching tv, I could watch the Braves, Cubs or Reds. I watched each trying to decide which team I would go with.

I was about 10 years old when I remember watching David Justice’s rookie year. I don’t remember which year Justice broke into the league, 1990, 1991?, but he was the player that pulled me into the Braves. He had a swagga about him that I just loved. He wasn’t afraid to show some emotion, and I remember cracking up hysterically at his check swings. You know the check swing I’m talking about.

That’s my first memory of being a Braves fan. Been a fan ever since. I’m certainly not a bandwagon fan, just happened to become a fan at the right time. At that time, I wasn’t even aware of their recent history of sucking hardcore.

I still remember when he was black balled for calling out Braves fans in Atlanta for not showing up and not cheering the team on. I totally agreed with him at the time and I still do to a point. I admit that Atlanta is a city where people come from all over to live and they more than likely bring their team with them. It was still depressing growing up in Indiana and watching so many playoff games on TV and seeing empty seats.

1999

I was born in 94, so I missed most of the glory days, but I remember getting swept by the Yanks in 99( of course) . My most vivid memory is that in Game 2 or 3, (i was 5 at the time so my memory isn’t all that sharp) I went to bed in the 7th inning with the Braves leading something like 6-3. 10 minutes later my mom comes into my room and tells me that the Yanks made a comeback and took the lead. Since them I’ve hated the Yankees and rooted for the underdog. I also remember in the 2003 ALDS when Smoltz came in to close a game out, the second out was a flyout by Slammin Sammie Sosa at the warning track and Smoltz started walking around the mound like he was thinking " Wow, I pulled that one out of my *." The next batter Smoltz struck out on 3 pitches. Ever since then I’ve loved Smoltz. Even to this day as a Cardinal. FIRST BALLOT HALL OF FAMER! LONG LIVE THE BIG 3!
