AL Gold Gloves
The AL gold gloves were announced today and as usual there is plenty of controversy.
C. Joe Mauer
1B. Mark Teixeira
2B. Placido Polanco
3B. Evan Longoria
SS. Derek Jeter
OF. Torii Hunter, Adam Jones, and Ichiro Suzuki
P. Mark Buehrle
Teixera, Longoria, and Buehrle deserved to win. Jeter, Suzuki, and Hunter won because of history. Mauer is a good catcher but I don't think he's the best. Polanco and Jones are both good defenders but others should have won it over them.
I don't know how many people actually take these things seriously anyway but we await the NL gold gloves anyway.

Jeter, really? He should be a 2B. Him and Ichiro are overrated on so many levels. Maybe if Ichiro could work a walk now and then…
Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.

what does walking have to do with defense?

his ability to take a walk has nothing to do with his glove… which is pretty good…
and you dont need to walk when ur OBP is 360 and you’ve proven that you get get on base by hitting
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Jeter deserved the Gold Glove.
Just kidding. Giving him a Gold glove is terrible.
You say to-mah-to, I say you're retarded.

HAHAHAHAHA
Biggest joke. LMAOO JETER!?!?!?!? I can name 14 starting SS that are better fielders than Jeter, and there aren’t even that many teams left in the AL.

I don't get the grief with Ichiro winning again
I do think Jeter benefits greatly from playing in the biggest market in sports. My pick probably would of went to Scutaro.

This Jeter character is pretty underrated.

Its his calm eyes…
People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Polanco deserved it
Highest UZR in the AL except for Zobrist, but Zobrist only logged about 720 innings (because he started the year as a super-u and had to wait for the starting job to open up) to Polanco’s 1258. Pedroia and Kinsler were right behind them, but Polanco wins out.
Jack Wilson had the highest UZR at SS, but of course only played half the year in the AL. Izturis and Andrus were neck and neck in UZR but Izturis committed 14 fewer errors, so the hardware should’ve been his. Jeter had an above average year for once in his life, but he certainly wasn’t tops. Aybar and Everett clocked in ahead of him as well, he wasn’t even in the top three.
Torii Hunter has logged a ton of great defensive seasons in his career, but didn’t get it done this year, mostly due to his injuries. Franklin Guttierez got the snub there, as he was WAY ahead of the pack. Jones had a negative UZR, his hardware should have gone to Carl Crawford. After those two its pretty closely knotted up, and Ichiro’s long track record probably got him over the hump. His choice is open to debate, but certainly not a coup like the other two.

In the outfield, the voters had to choose both Torii Hunter and Ichiro Suzuki, because both had won eight straight Gold Gloves and everybody knows that if you’ve won eight you automatically deserve to win nine. Fortunately, the voters were wise enough to make room for an exciting young outfielder who burst upon the scene in 2009 with some of the most brilliant defense we’ve seen in center field since the heyday of Andruw Jones.
I am referring, of course, to the stupendously amazing Franklin Gutierrez, who … Wait, what? They didn’t vote for Franklin Gutierrez, who spent the entire season catching everything in sight and racking up phenomenal numbers?

much better job
on the NL than the AL winners by the BWAA… Not perfect, but none of these were completely egregious like Derek Jeter.

Good for Zim. First of 10 in a row I think.

Happy for him as well, but
Friend and I talked about this – despite Zim being the rightful and likely winner for 10 in a row, if he doesn’t perform offensively or make headlines again with another hit-streak, or do anything to maintain the public eye, the default winner of the 3B NL GG is going to be David Wright, as long as the BBWAA is looking at crap like FP% and putouts:chances.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
by royhobbs on Nov 12, 2009 10:04 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think you’re right, which is sad because Wright can’t hold Zim’s jock strap when it comes to D. It’s so far from close it’s not even funny.

so true
so sadly true. By the way, it was pretty insulting to the fans when Wright won it as a consolation prize for not getting the MVP. The GG is its own separate award and should have been given based on its own merits.

chase utley>o-dog and victorino should not have won a gold glove

i dont understand the O dog one or the Rollins pick (there were 3-4 better defenders at SS in th NL this year… Hardy, Furcal, Theriot and Drew)
and Victorino has no business winning a gold glove…should have gone to Cameron
and i was surprised at how well Bourn did int he OF (for some reason i thought he was a butcher)
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

No
Bourn wasn’t a bad pick, he was pretty good. Hardy didn’t play enough games to win it, and a lot of those other guys are good and maybe better than Rollins, but it was Tulowitki that really got the shaft on that one. And O-Dog was outplayed by Utley and Brandon Phillips with the glove.
Yet, stil not as egregious (IMO) as Derek Jeter getting one and Gutierrez not getting one. That was an absolute travesty.
by Andy Braves Fan on Nov 12, 2009 12:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
gutierrez not gettin one is as bad as McLouth winning his two years ago or w/e it was
it might be the biggest slight int he history of GG

actually Jeter winning this year wasnt as bad as it has been in the past when he was actually a negative in UZR he was +6 this year which is prtty solid and could warrant it..but i agree it should have gone to Andrus probably

This is true
no doubt. But with Evis Andrus and Cesar Izturus out there, clearly there were more qualified candidates. I guess you are correct, it wasn’t as much of a travesty as I have been saying (would have been for the 3 years previous though).

Adam Everett is still out there playing stellar SS also. Jeter had a good season for Jeter, but not by overall SS standards, where being “average” doesn’t make you the best.
by FineHamAbounds on Nov 13, 2009 1:17 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Clearly
but it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Jeter did finally have an average year. In past years, he has been well below average…
by Andy Braves Fan on Nov 13, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
for me Jeter is deserving
Cesar and Everett didnt play enough games ( i remember around 110 -115 for both)
Andrus has the best case, but there are things that work against him/for Jeter
Andrus is a rookie, he plays in TX and he cant hit
Jeter is a veteran and “the greatest Yankee ever”, he had a good offensive season, and of course he is a Yankee
I know those things shouldn’t matter when its Gold Glove but they do
for once i have no problem giving the award to Jeter
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

esp when you consider Andrus made 22 errors (i know those arent the best fielding metric…. but still they do matter a little)

I agree
but it sucks that Jeter’s being “the greatest Yankee”, and the fact that he can hit, played into his winning a GG. No matter how you slice it, it wasn’t really the right choice.
by Andy Braves Fan on Nov 16, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the 22 errors really hurt Andrus IMHO… in the eyes of the voters that isnt good esp when Jeter had like 8 or soemthin
remember these are the same assholes who gave McLouth a GG bc he didnt make an error all season
