Braves 2009 Season in Review: David Ross
Guess who led the 2009 Atlanta Braves in OPS. Did you guess Brian McCann? How about Chipper Jones? Martin Prado? What about Adam LaRoche? Okay, it was actually LaRoche, but the guy who ranked second was David Ross with an .888 OPS. For all of our decent or good offensive players, David Ross was the second best hitter on the team.
Ross' good patience at the plate was complimented by his excellent power. His 7 homeruns rank second in the majors for any player with 160 or fewer at-bats. Add to that his 48% caught stealing rate (19 CS in 40 ATT) and he was truly the best backup catcher in baseball. And he may be the best backup catcher the Braves have ever had. Eddie Perez might have had a better offensive year in 1998 (.941 OPS), but Eddie wasn't as good at throwing out runners as Ross was. Eddie had a 29% CS% that year, which is far below that of Ross this year. So when we combine offense and defense, I think we can say that Ross' year was the best for any Atlanta backup backstop.
That 48% caught stealing percentage was the best in the National League for any catcher with more than three attempts against him. That's an impressive weapon to put into the lineup when your starting catcher is not available, and this is even more ammunition for the Braves to give Brian McCann more regular rest next season. This is also ammunition for the Braves to use David Ross as a pinch hitter more often.
Ross did not have a pinch hit in 2009, but he only got to the plate in that situation three times, walking once and making two outs. For his career, Ross has a .905 OPS when pinch hitting, showing off his plus power in the process with 3 pinch hit homeruns in 40 at-bats. We need to make him one of our featured pinch hitters next year. If the team is worried about not having a catcher late in the game in case of injury, then they can rely on an emergency catcher like Matt Diaz (who came up as a catcher), or the Braves can carry three catchers, keeping Clint Sammons on the bench. Sammons by the way, threw out all three of the baserunners who tried to steal against him this year.
Certainly a guy who hits as well as Ross did should be featured in the offense more. And his season was not a fluke. He's put up an OPS+ of 130 (like he did this year) or better in four of his eight big league seasons. I'd like to see the Braves carry three catchers next year and use Ross or Sammons every fifth day giving McCann regular rest, and use Ross as a pinch hitter three or four times a week.
Coming up tomorrow, the top-5 minor league catchers in the Braves system, and a catcher's roundtable between the bloggers here at Talking Chop.

Definitely, I believe that Ross should get more playing time next season. I wouldn’t expect his numbers to remain the same with more at-bats, but he is a more than capable hitter and an excellent catcher.

I completely agree. Ross should not only get the day game after a night game assignments next year but also should start now and then vs tough LHP who McCann hits poorly against. I could sort of understand not pinch hitting Ross in the first 5 months of the season, but there’s no reason he shouldn’t have been the primary pinch hitter in September.

I love this guy
If the Braves actually get this mysterious right-handed big bat everyone is talking about, it’d be nice to have Ross in the line-up an extra 4-5 days a month.

Eddie always had Greg Maddux on the mound. Nobody would have a good caught stealing percentage with Maddux on the mound.

3 catchers?
I really don’t see the Braves trying to carry 3 catchers next season. Ross acumen in both offense and defense all but render the one dimensional (defense) Clint Sammons useless. To fill the pinch hitting void, that could be either Kelly Johnson and Omar Infante.. with Matt Diaz revisiting catcher during the spring.

the braves wont pay Kelly 3mil to hit once a game, and I think asking Matt Diaz to start training as a catcher again might be a little unrealistic, but I don’t necessarily want Clint Sammons to get a games worth of AB’s either

I don’t think Diaz getting SOME work in at catcher is unrealistic at all. He’s a baseball player, I’m sure he’ll be alright. He grew up catching, although he hasn’t professionally caught. His capacity would only be as a 3rd catcher.. i.e. Emergency catcher. I just wouldn’t want to fathom Sammons on the roster if we already have Ross.

I'm sure Kelly won't hit once a game..
2009 : 131
2008: 115
2007: 126
2006: 104
2005: 100
(Here are the # of starts Chipper Jones has had at 3RD Base during the last 5 seasons. Point is, anybody that plays 3rd figures to get plenty of work during the season)

So… Infante and Conrad will get plenty of games at 3rd in 2010 then?
by redwards95 on Oct 8, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
...and as such...
Johnson will get plenty of starts at 2B.

I could see 3 catchers...
but only if we don’t sign the desired bat for 1B, at which point I’d advocate having Ross play some there.

Why would you do that?
He hasn’t played the position for about 15 years.

Maybe...
But it’s tough to keep your starting LF (as many hope) available to use as a catcher.

I don’t see why Ross wasn’t used as a PH more often either. I understand the fear of using your backup catcher and him not being available if McCann got hurt or something, but that’s exactly the type of situation you have an “emergency catcher” for. Ross needs to see some more ABs next year, especially against the lefties that give McCann problems.

You talk about an emergency catcher like a guy who could see the team through a game.
If you’re down to your emergency guy, you’re going to try to get to the ned of the game, not win it.

In addition to being a great player, Ross won me over early on when I read about how devastated he was after a tough loss. For a guy who had only been around a few weeks and wasn’t even an everyday player, I was impressed that he’d already invested so much of his heart in the team.

Yes...Ross is a good back up but we need Pena back...
Actually he is a very good backup in the fact that he offers enough when he plays to not hurt the team in the field or at the plate and even does enough to be a passable fill in should McCann get hurt.
He has enough to offer offensively to be a decent pitch hitter and will even take his fair share of walks to go with decent power. However, Bobby is one of those guys who won’t often use his backup catcher (though he will use McCann off the bench when Ross is starting??) unless he has a 3rd catcher.
To my knowledge Diaz was never a “catcher” but went to the AZ Instructional League withthe Royals to “learn” catching. Does that make him a catcher? No-but could he or Infante catch 2-3 innings if they had to. Yes. Would it be pretty…no…but it could be done.
However, to really enable Ross to be effective we need a 3rd catcher of some sort on the roster to make Bobby happy. However, you don’t want to waste a roster spot with Sammons who won’t hit and can’t play anywhere else outside of C. It would be great to have some who can hit a little…could catch a game or two if need be…and could play the one of he OF/IF corners if you had to…the problem is who could do all of that?
You know who? Branyan Pena! I really hated that the Braves gave up on him as he seemed like an ideal bench kind of player. Is he going ot be a fulltime MLB catcher? No. Is he going to be a fulltime MLB 3B? No. Is he going to be a fulltime MLB LF? No. However, the guy can hit a little and hardly ever strikes out (which to me are key attributes of a pinch hitter). And while he will never be a gold glover at any position he could catch a few games here and there if he had to…and could man a corner spot for a couple innings in an emergency and do fine.
Having him on the roster would allow bobby the flexibility to hit Ross..or hit Pena and have the flexibility to have that emergency reserve. Unfortunately though the Braves traded Pena for a bag of baseballs and a “thank you.”
However, if you think about guys who fit the description in the same way….Javier Valentin, Adam Meuluse,Vinnie Rottino they all fit the same profile..they have hit a little at some point and could be valuable. Valentin in particular has a track record of being a good offensive player and a good PH…just a questionable catcher. However, for the “3rd” catcher that is fine.
Some might argue that you can’t carry someone that would be that definsively limited. Well…we did it with Norton this year. Besides Valentin could catch a few innnings, has played some 1B, and some 3B.

.774 OPS as a pinch hitter this year, that’s a couple hundred points higher than Norton.

I honestly loved Pena.
He’s versatile, he’s a good hitter, and he’s fair enough in the field.
As for Norton, while there were plenty of issues with his play this year, the guy’s a fine 1B.

everyday player?
I’m no expert on OPS and lots of new found baseball stats, but is this guy good enough to be an everyday player? Like maybe good enough that he or McCann could solve our first base issue?
by MurphyHOF on Oct 8, 2009 11:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No.
Neither of them have played the position anything close to recently, and their bats would go from top of the line at catcher to mid-pack at 1B.

I think it asinine that Bobby didn’t use him to PH more this year and slot him as the designated catcher for one of our starters. He’s too valuable to not be utilized more.
Like some others have said, groom Diaz more as an emergency catcher and if you get an injury that is serious and will take out Heap or Ross for a while – deal with it then.
There were games when we PH Norton in the 9th and Ross was left on the bench and I just shook my head in disbelief.
