Yankees/Twins and Chip Caray's man crush

Did anyone else watch this game? I dislike the Yanks as much as the next guy, but I have to take issue with Chip Caray's serious man-crush on Derek Jeter. Every other sentence out of his mouth made me think of that line from Wayne's World.

"Excuse me Russel, but I believe I ordered the handjob."

One time, he gushed over Jeter catching a screaming line drive right at him by saying, "Derek Jeter in perfect position to take care of Michael Cuddyer." Really, Chip? 'Cuz he was at shortstop. You know, where he usually plays? Between 3rd and 2nd? You know, where most shortstops play?

There were no less than 4 graphics prepared to show how great Derek Jeter is, we had to watch the replay of that play where he threw out Jeremy Giambi at home by being in a totally strange place on the field and redirecting a relay throw. The guy just had to go 2-for-2 with 2 walks too, just to give Chip more to talk about.

All this, and almost no mention of Joe Mauer, who is the likely MVP this year.

If you like that...

then you should’ve heard him call a line out a base hit in the tiebreaker last night.

"My God! Good news fans, the Braves are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact, they appear to be beating the crap out of each other."

i heard that too

Yes, what a ridiculous call.

And there was also how he was gushing about the strikeout pitch that was inside by two feet.

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Derek Jeter is a legendary player that deserves that kind of attention.

That being said, Chip does tend to cream himself everytime someone on Jeter’s level makes an average play. (Anyone on the Yanks, BoSox, Phils, Dodgers)

by BigG1392 on Oct 7, 2009 10:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Jeter may be legendary, but he doesn’t need that attention. He doesn’t even feed off of it. He’s the captain of the Yankees, he comes to the ballpark, does his work, and leaves. That’s Jeter. So he doesn’t need the attention, but he does get a lot.

Oh please.

A guy not looking for attention doesn’t make the “greatest play ever” on a two foot relay throw, nor does he go face-first in the stands when it wasn’t at all necessary.

So...

is this sarcasm…or are you saying he’s not looking for attention..

by Hcgadawgs on Oct 12, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you can remove "on Jeter's level" and the sentence still works...

hence why Chip has really gone down the list for me of tolerable announcers. He seems to cream himself on even average plays.

Last time I checked...

2-2, 2 RBI, 3 runs doesn’t qualify as a “monster game,” but in the glistening eyes of Chip Caray it is. We get enough of this crap from Rick Sutcliffe and Tim McCarver on the other networks, we don’t need Chip Jeeting up TBS as well.

Really?

They save every jersey Jeter’s ever worn. He’s that awesome.

Devil's Advocate

Chip Caray is in his third year calling national broadcasts. I think he’s still adjusting to having to be unbiased, so he tries to get excited whenever anything good happens to either team. This is a pretty big stage, and Chip’s still relatively young, so i imagine he feels alot of pressure to call a good game.

And Skip wasn’t exactly the best at estimating whether a fly ball was gonna go out or not either: “Fly ball, deep left field! Jordan hauls it in 30 feet shy of the warning track.”

"Matt Diaz is a baseball player."-Joe Simpson

by 10-4 on Oct 8, 2009 8:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but Skip did not sugar coat players’ actions. If they sucked, he told you. If they were good, he told you. He also did not jump on any particular player or team’s bandwagon when he did national broadcasts; he called a balanced game, not skewed towards the Yankees, Dodgers, or anyone else. Probably why he did not do many national broadcasts, too good of an announcer.

And flyballs are sometimes hard to read off the bat as too how far they are going. That’s why Andrew Jones was a Gold Glover before he got fat and lazy, he could read a flyball instantly and correctly.

Jeter's gonna be in the Hall...

But so are lots of players. It was just that every routine play, every time he didn’t swing at a bad pitch, every time he didn’t make a mistake doing something every player does, Chip had to remind us that it was because Jeter’s so talented/smart/has good instincts or something.

Here's a thought...

if Jeter plays anywhere else other than New York, is he anywhere near as big a name? Nothing about his career stats really jumps out at you. He’s an above average hitter with WAY too many strikeouts for a singles hitter.

This has always been my argument. If he played for Milwakee his whole career, sure, he’d be a great player, but he wouldn’t be this god that they make him out to be.

Agreed

I’ve been angrily shouting this at the television since 1998.

He’s got a good batting average, and a lot of counting stats (notably hits, SBs, and runs scored). But yeah, he’s among the most overrated players around, and without playing in New York, he’d be Barry Larkin (without the defense and the walks).

by FineHamAbounds on Oct 8, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention that runs scored heavily depends on people driving you in. Not the most independent of stats.

Jeter's career has been made on clutch performances ...

in the post season. So if he’s not in NY, is he still leading his team into the playoffs and to championships? If so, then yes he would be just as big a name.

by Mr. Sanchez on Oct 9, 2009 6:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

"Leading" is certainly a subjective term.

He was always there and his team was always winning. Was he the sole difference? I don’t really tihnk so.

He's a classy guy and an above average player

But I was still more than happy and totally honored to be able to boo him heartily at the first game at New Yankee Stadium. Although two people shouting “sucks!” after every “Derek Jeter” the other 50,000 folks were yelling didn’t really even out.

Jesus give the guy a break

I love to hear Chip broadcasting games. I’m sure he knows he’s getting bonus points from the execs every time he says it. But I like the way he handles himself with class and wit. I would rather hear him than Joe Buck any day of the year.
