Atlanta Braves Winter League Roundup: 10/28

The Peoria Saguaros started the AFL season off by losing 6 straight games and now they are 6-8 on the season. Not a bad turnaround. Also they have done it without Jason Heyward in the lineup. Coincidence?

Peoria 9, Surprise 0

  • F. Freeman 3-4 2B, RBI, BB
  • B. Hicks 2-4 3B, RBI, BB
  • J. Lyman 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K
  • L. Hyde 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 1K
  • C. Kimbrel 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 2K

Frederick Freeman's AFL season can be split into two sets of 4 games apiece so far. In the first 4 games he had 15 AB with just 1 hit and 8K. In the last 4 games he has amassed 8 hits in 16 AB (3 XBH) and only 3K. He has brought his OPS up to .841 and he has an OBP of .389. This comes on the same day that Jim Callis mentioned that some scouts weren't impressed with Freeman so far. This kid is still an elite prospect. Brandon Hicks has impressed me so far with 8 BB vs 8K (though 8K is still a lot for 31 AB) and he has continued to hit at a .323 clip. Craig Kimbrel has also been impressive so far, though his walks are still out of line.

Guasave 3, Navojoa 6 - 8th Inning

  • M. Young 1-3 2B, RBI, BB, CS(3)
  • R. Gorecki 1-2 2B, 2 RBI, BB, CS(1)

Nothing too exciting going on here. Matt Young keeps taking walks and getting on base. He will never be a star but I think he could give a couple of solid seasons as an ideal backup OF. Does anyone know if Gorecki is actually still with the Braves system or if he is just playing winter ball on his own?

This one would have been a great game for you to go to. Ahh, hindsight.

ahh, these daygames kill me

The only games I can ever make are the 6:35 games, and it seems like the Saguaros play nothing but daygames anymore. Friday and next Monday there’s night games, but of course, im gonna be out of town for the weekend. just my luck. I’d really like to go up and see Freddie play. I’m not as crazy about him as other people are, but maybe it’s just cause i’ve never seen him play

I’m pretty high on Freeman.

I thought he was an elite prospect and our impact 1Bman of the future. Then he went 1 for 15. So I thought he was a bum, a washout. Now, however, I think he is an elite prospect again.

"high on Freeman"...

just how does that work exactly? Do you pull like Keith Richards and snort a line of his ashes? Or maybe like Cartman and turn it into a chocolate milk mix?

Andre Agassi.

Just take some of his hair and melt it down with crystal meth.

Gorecki:

Im pretty sure he’s still with the Braves. A few weeks ago, I think Carlyle and Campillo were both released into FA and Gorecki was just outrighted to AAA or something like that

I think he’s a free agent. He’s got enough service time in the minors that can become one. I think the only reason that they made a point of saying the other guys were free agents is because they have enough major league service time to elect free agency if they’re taken off the roster. Like if this happened during the season they could become free agents, but Gorecki would still have to go to AAA.
But, I don’t know for sure.

Ok, got the answer today. In Baseball America’s newest transactions list they report that the Braves granted Gorecki free agency.

Good luck, Reid.
My guess is he’s got a less than 50-50 chance of ever sticking as a 4th OFer on a Major League roster, but I hope I’m wrong.

Also they have done it without Jason Heyward in the lineup. Coincidence?

The locals in Rome talked about how bad the team was when Heyward and Freeman were together. And the record out in MB kind of showed similarly last year. I know it’s a small sample, but it is kind of disturbing to hear these coincidences.

look at the rosters around them...

some Ps and Cody, but who else was gonna produce if not them?

by Mr. Sanchez on Oct 29, 2009 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A lot of the folks in Rome

Insinuated attitude problems with both of them, which was why the team did so poorly.

This is new.

Everyone’s always playing the maturity angle with Heyward. Respectful, both parents went to Dartmouth, and so on. I’d like to hear more if you or anyone else has further insight on this (as would others, I’m sure).

Don’t know anything about Freeman, but all indications I’ve read are that he’s a good guy.

by hoboken_wood on Oct 29, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Everything I’ve ever heard from players about the fans in Rome is that they’re great and supportive, but they get a little clingy. And, there tend to be a few who come to the park every night and get the star players to sign the exact same stuff. I met a guy who lived there who said he literally got Francouer to sign 5 of his Bowman card every night, until about June when Frenchy finally told him that was enough.

What I’m saying is, there could be other factors. The guys were 19 in their first full season, living in a small town in a strange place. I personally think you’re not likely to find to guys more devoid of attitude problems.

Ha

This is kind of true, but it’s kind of a he-said-she-said thing for the most part. Some of the older folks said that Heyward and Freeman had a bit of an air of entitlement to them, based on their status and expectations in the organization, but then again, to justify the “clingy” allegation, I was also sitting next to a woman who said Jesus Sucre was her adopted son.

It’s hard to say, and obviously when they’re both up, it’s hardly going to matter anymore, but I was a little, not necessarily disappointed, but I guess a little surprised in the body language, and unwillingness to fraternize with the fans pre-game, from both of them, while in Mississippi.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Yeah, that was disappointing to see in your post. Especially since neither of them played that day. I have a couple of friends who follow sportsgraphing.com, a forum board about getting autographs, and they said that throughout the year people were reporting that Heyward and Freeman became more and more stingy about autographs. Of course, that’s true for almost anybody, autographs are a lot easier to get in April than in August, and these guys, especially Heyward, were major targets wherever they went.
And I obviously have a different perspective because I’ve never had any problem whatsoever getting their autographs and actually have a great relationship with Freddie.

hold up...

so is the attitude meaning with fans, or internally in the clubhouse too? As a fan, I’m biased, but I’d still say how they relate to teammates is FAR, FAR more important than fan relations.

at the AFL game a few weeks ago

Jason was more than happy to sign. he had 50 people or so in his face, and he signed for quite a few of them. freddie didn’t sign, but he never came on the field or played.

Clubhouse cancer! We should trade them before they go all Milton Bradley/Gary Sheffield on us.

im ok with them going Gary Sheffield bc Gary is one of the best RH hitters of our generation… Milton Bradley is just a prick with a couple above avg seasons under his belt

Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

It’s a joke to blame them for those bad teams. I mean really look at the other offensive pieces they’ve been working with? It’s those two and CoJo, and after those teams have had nothing even remotely decent, save for say Linares who didn’t even start hitting until they’d been promoted.

If the rest of your lineup is Cole Miles, Michael Fisher, Adam Coe, Sam Sime, Benji Johnson, Chad Lundahl you’re probably going to suck.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

hmm…well, its been a lot colder than out here in Arizona the past few days. Maybe the weather had something to do with it? It was only 50 degrees around noon or so

Wow, so it’s 10 degrees cooler in AZ than in VA? Eh, still doesn’t make up for the fact that you can go to a ballgame if you choose and I can’t.
