Atlanta Braves Winter League Roundup: 10/27
Some of our hitters look like they are picking up the pace.
Mesa 5, Peoria 6
- F. Freeman 2-4 HR(1), K
- B. Hicks 0-1 3BB, K
Freddie Freeman hit his first homer in a couple of months and has been better in his last couple of outings after he apparently knocked the rust off in the first few games. Also of note was that tonight he was batting 3rd which is a couple of spots up from where he has been the past few games. Brandon Hicks is hitting .296 so far and has 7 BB in 34 PA (though 8K also). If he can carry those walks over into the regular season and raise his batting average up to .250 he is going to be useful. Speaking of useful, Lee Hyde pitched a scoreless inning last night.
Gusave 6, Navojoa 7 - 7th Inning
- M. Young 0-3 2 BB, K
- R. Gorecki 1-3 BB, K, SB(1)
- T. Gustafson 5.1IP 6H 6R 5BB 1K
Tim Gustafson finally got knocked around a little in Mexico. He has been progressively worse in each start though this was his only truly bad one. I am bit surprised to see Reid Gorecki in winter ball, but I have always heard that he is a true baseball rat and plays every chance he gets. Matt Young only has 2 hits in his last 5 games and has seen his AVG fall to .250 though his OBP is .365.

As asked earlier re: Heyward...
do we get to replace him in AFL or do they just go with one fewer player?

Usually they’re able to send a replacement. And if they don’t want to, one of the other teams get to. They may end up taking someone off the taxi squad, the guys that can only play on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and just making them full time.

So do we send a replacement?...
and if so, who? Cody Johnson?

I don’t know if they’re going to, or really who it should be. Cody had his own injury situation toward the end of the year, so he might do well to rest. I’d like to see Willie Cabrera sent out there.

I was kidding about Cody...
Cabrera sounds interesting, maybe Concepcion Rodriguez. Could Brandon Jones go?

Concho is playing in Mexico already. Brandon Jones could absolutely go, but since he’s so old, I don’t really know that there’s a point.
And why kidding about Johnson?

For Jones, I guess to see if early or late last year...
was his true form. Give him some at bats and either a chance to win a 4th OF job, or in the least show off in front of scouts out there for trade value. Also, he kind of fits with Heyward as a left handed hitting corner OF if that is what their club needs to replace (others have said they don’t exactly fit an ideal roster out there).
And I didn’t think Johnson was at that level yet. Maybe he is and could benefit, but with the level of prospect out there (or at least the level some folks seem to imply) I figured it might not be very beneficial for him to go out there and possibly strike out at a 60+% clip.
