Interesting to see McGwire's hiring after being relatively incognito the past few years during the steroid scandals. Since he wasn't there to talk about the past back when, he better be prepared to be asked about it now.

Good for you, Mark

I remember growing up in Missouri and always having the Cards games on TV. Watching him and Sammy Sosa go at it every night was a blast

My goal for Spring Training in 2010 is to get Pujols’ autograph (which apparently isn’t that hard to get), so it’d be nice to add in Big Mac for good measure.

What?...

Is he gonna give the players andro? McGwire seems like a suspect hitting coach. He’s a career .263 hitter, a solid OBP but then how many of those walks were of the intentionally unintentional variety? Then there is the great player trying to be a great coach thing which rarely pans out. Add in the immediate scrutiny and questioning of his past that he’s never seemed willing to answer before, and this just doesn’t seem like a good move for the club.

You’re giving the term “Hitting Coach” to much credit. Do you really think that hitting coaches have that much influence? By the time players hit the majors, they are who they are and not much is going to change that. So really, I see this as a token move for the Cards more than anything else. They don’t hit well next year, Mac will be the scape goat and he’ll be told to pack his bags.

It’s not a good move, it’s not a bad move. It just is.

That was pretty much my gut reaction

You can’t teach his OBP, because with the exception of Pujols no Cardinal strikes the kind of fear into pitcher’s hearts as Big Mac. That’s not a skill he’ll be able to pass on, and you’re right, he’s pretty much a one-trick pony with that low career avg. And his character is VERY much in question, but I’m not sure how that would affect the team, unless there are clean players who resent being tutored by roider who’s still hiding in the closet or something like that. Overall I don’t think his presence will set off a bomb or anything, but I certainly don’t think he’s gonna magically improve that offense. If it works, the Nats ought to think about making Dunn a a player-coach.

the effect it might have on the team...

was shown at LaRussa’s PC imo. Basically, until he sits down and addresses the steroid question, media people will ask the same questions over and over and over again, to his manager, him, to his players, everyone. They won’t let that question die and until Mac deals with it there will be the giant elephant in the room. If he just dodges and dances around the questions as he has for so long now, sometime around May his players may get tired of hearing it for the 7,351,926th time.

That's a fiar point

I didn’t see the press conference, so I didn’t know if he was being welcomed back as a hero by the locals or if that issue would be a sticking point. I’m glad to see they’re not giving him a pass on it. Big babies like him need to act their age and fess up to their crimes against humanity poor decisions while playing.
