Mike Minor
Minor
I seen that he has been pretty good in the AFL so far.He threw 3 shutout innings today as he got the start for his club.I was wondering if anyone knew what the Braves plans were for him.I seen on a video on mlb.com that if he does well he might start next year in Mississippi and might be on a fast track to Atlanta.I seen on this site some video footage of him pitching at the AFL which was pretty cool,I was wondering what was his pitches like though.Has the velocity on his fastball gone up a lil.I read on his draft coverage his stuff will pretty much stay the same but the guys who say such stuff doesn't know exactly what will happen with every player every time.If he continues to do well in the AFL he might just start in Mississippi. In double A the prospects are very good and sometimes better than AAA.Triple A players not all of them though are wash outs, the hot prospects are in AA.AFL is known for the good hitters and Minor is holding hisown over there,Ihope he can continue this progress.

That’s my guess. And if he dominates for a month or two it will be a quick promotion to AA.

yeah i think thats best i mean its not like we need to rush the guy up to the majors cause we are pretty stacked with pitching right now… and if he does dominate like you said then thats great but i want him to earn it first ;)

I read some of espn’s “experts” weren’t too impressed with Minor’s first couple outings. He is considered an advanced arm and he isn’t playing over his head in the AFL. He has the command and offspeed pitch to compete out there.

The shocking part of your statement is that ESPN has experts …. isn’t that kinda like calling the Grand Canyon a “ditch”?

hence the espn’s “experts” and not espn’s experts. Keith Law is probably the only one of their “experts” who seems to actually have some expertise. And that is who had less than great things to say about Minor. Sometimes I think to myself, Steve Phillips was the GM of the Mets, surely he has to have some useful information but no, he doesn’t have shit.

Really on Phillips?...
Did you watch the Mets in his tenure? That’d be like saying because Pete Babcock has been an NBA front office exec/scout and GM for over a decade, he’d have some useful information on who would be a good NBA player. But then you can go look at his drafts and realize, no he shouldn’t.

If advanced arms are supposed to do so well, why isn’t Strasburgh dominating?
by blitzerlover on Oct 25, 2009 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cause, unlike Minor, he hadn’t played in a game that mattered since he was in college?

I agree
I agree with you man,why is alot of people hating on Minor.Just because he doesn’t throw 100 mph it doesn’t mean the man won’t become a starter we can’t use.Remember it was Minor who was the better guy when both Strasburgh and Minor pitched together. It was Minor who dominated the opponent not Strasburgh.Glavine never threw a 100 mph and he is headed to The Hall.Andy P. don’t throw a 100 mph and he has been a great pitcher through his career.Minor has 4 pitches he throws for strikes and I think he will do just fine for the Braves. He touches 93 with his fastball and I think that can get it done at the Major League level.

vandy>sdsu, it’s not like they were actually going head to head; it was minor vs sdsu and strasburg vs vandy. Glavine was great don’t get me wrong but he seriously benefited tremendously from a sizeable strike zone and you’re right velocity isn’t everything but it just means that Minor has to be that much better than Strasburg with every single pitch. Look I’m not hating on Minor, I think he’ll be a decent BOR starter for someone soon but with the 7th overall pick I was expecting a little more potential

Who knows what will happen with Stras and Minor in 5 years from now. Stras could become the next Prior with all the potential in the world then bam he gets hurt and stays hurt and MInor could be similar to Glavine have a great career or Stras could become an Ace for many many years and Minor a solid #3 guy in the majors or Minor a guy to be a journeyman type player who really knows? Time will tell…

not to call you out…but comparing Minor to Glavine is kinda ridiculous. Minor throws in the low 90s… Glavine almost never hit 90 (if ever)… Minor throws four pitches, but he is able to throw hard and get outs… Glavine pitched to contact with finesse. Im not calling Minor a power pitcher, but he’s no Glavine.
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Glavine did throw in the low 90s back when he won a Cy Young.

Minor
I wasn’t comparing Minor to Glavine,I was trying to imply that just because Minor doesn’t throw 100 mph that doesn’t mean he won’t amount to nothing. There have been critics out there that don’t like him because of him not having a fireball for a fastball.I mention Glavine to make a point ,being Glavine didn’t throw 100 mph yet he is still headed to the Hall Of Fame.My point being you don’t have to throw 100 or high 90’s to make in the majors. That was my point ,not to compare but to give an example.

Number of guys who threw 100 mph currently in the Hall of Fame
1.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

Minor on Big Stage
What increases the stock of an average performer???…a dominating performance on a big stage… His performance at that international tournament about a couple of years ago…(didn’t he pictch against Cuba?) caught the eye of a lot of MLB scouts. His Pictching coach at Vandy is well respected and his praises went a long way too getting him his top ten draft. My prediction is if he dominates in the AFL, yes, he will be in Missisip at the start of the season…but just an average gets him to A ball.

Lived in Nashville last year and listened to his coach being interviewed several times. He is comfortable throwing 90-92 with movement. Can hit 93-94 but loses some movement and uses it as a show pitch. Lost his top two catchers his senior year and the kids replacing them had trouble handling his pitches and resulted in him limiting his selection. He is primarily a ground ball picher as everything he throws moves down. His control is fantastic, his mechanics are sound, and he doesn’t get rattled. He beat the Cubans twice, literally shutting them down. He’s very smart and thinks his way through a lineup. He has the makings of a solid ML pitcher at the least.

So he gets a lot of ground ball outs? hmmmm reminds me off....
Tommy Glavine? Those are huge shoes to fill but it seems everyone wants that. When I see him dominate a WS game will I start to use his name and Tommy’s in the same sentence…
Actually I asked someone on his team (RSF) what he thought of him and he was very impressed…can’t remember his exact words but the feeling I got from him was he meant every word of his glowing praise about him.
