Oooo... Braves rumors!
MLBTR takes this David O'Brien blog post, where he talks to Braves GM Frank Wren, and lists the "hot stove highlights." While there were five bullet points to consider, there was nothing in the way of new information. This got me re-thinking about something that I had meant to post earlier in our off-season.
As great as last winter was for Braves rumors, mainly because of the more open style of Frank Wren, I submit that this winter will be the exact opposite. Wren was a much more media-friendly General Manager than his predecessor John Schuerholz. Wren was candid about many topics, including trades and free agent signings; all of which actually helped make the off-season the tumultuous roller coaster that it became.
Many of the leaks about the Jake Peavy deal came from the other coast, but Wren was certainly not shy about discussing the Braves' interest in the then-San Diego ace. The John Smoltz situation played out as an ugly public spectacle. Losing A.J. Burnett was tougher than it should have been because we publicly pronounced that he was our top pitching target. Losing Rafael Furcal was a also tougher than it should have been because the Atlanta front office was media-friendly enough to leak the news of the signing before anything had actually been signed. And then the Ken Griffey Jr. decision was hashed out in public.
Those are the lessons that our new GM has learned over the past year -- enough lessons for an entire career. I would imagine that Wren will turn back to the ways of John Schuerholz and lock the Braves front office down tighter than Langley. We will not hear a peep out of them this winter, and every signing and trade will be a complete surprise without any advance warning.
I think part of my job this winter will be to point out media bloviating and speculation-run-amok more than talking about actual rumors and leaked nuggets of information. Feel free to bookmark this post and call me on it if I'm wrong.

What I take from that is....
we will make a big move this offseason and will be one that no one predicted or saw coming. Not just because FW is changing how he deals with giving the media info, but because that’s how it was last year.
Yes Burnett, Peavy, Furcal, and even Griffey were well hyped and followed by the media and discussed here ad nauseum. But none of those deals got done. The biggest impact deals that did happen were kept under wraps until it was signed sealed and delivered. Vaz and Lowe and then McLouth and unFrenchifying were all quiet. I expect things to start happening very soon after the World Series.

wasn’t the Renteria to detroit for JJ and Gorkys trade done a day or two after the world series in 2007?

Yeah, trade occurred on October 30th and the World Series ended the 28th.

You make a good point there. All the most talked about rumors never happened. I don’t remember if there were many rumors about McLouth or Javy, and if there were I don’t recall it like those other rumors.
Maybe it is a lessened learned by Wren, or he is just that savvy to talk up certain deals that he knows probably won’t happen and work on solid deals more quietly.
Needless to say, if Gondeee is right, this could be a pretty boring offseason. We’ll probably start 10 more posts on how the Tex trade was bad and how it was good if things are really quiet. Oh joy!

Hehe, that would happen anyway! IMO it will be a quiet offseason overall meaning we make very fwe moves. But Wren’s demeaner seems like whatever move/moves he does make are going to be HUGE.

I think Wren has shown that he already has learned that lesson. The McLouth trade was a complete surprise, as were the Frenchy and LaRoche trades.
It makes me wonder a bit if all of the Peavy, Griffey, etc talk was nothing more than a smokescreen….

This post just reinforces the idea that anything Braves related coming from the likes of Heyman, Rosenthal, MLBTR, et al this winter should be considered worthless.
Say what you want about him, but this is the time of year you want to pay more attention to DOB. He’s liable to hear anything transaction related before those other assholes.

Glad you mentioned that
Like a lot of folks (cough…cough…Tim Hudson), I was pretty fed up with DOB and his comrades during the last offseason, but certainly came around as the season went on. While I still chuckle at his attempts to come across as a hipster guru, I’ve come to appreciate his writing, and agree with hoboken that he’ll likely be a good to follow this offseason, as he’ll probably looking to avoid the kind of controversy that got him in trouble a year ago.

Touche
I knew someone would mention his rough offseason (although I don’t ever remember reading where he thought Burnett was a lock).
I think he knows and understands how baseball fans eat up the hot stove rumors, so he’ll still try and give Braves fans as much as he can on that front. However, as mentioned downthread by Bravely, he’ll just be a lot more careful about it this time around.

I am pretty sure that FW will control the message better this year
Look at the LaRoche, McLouth and Church trades during the season. All were kept pretty quiet.
