Campillo, Carlyle, and Nunez granted free agency
Pitchers Jorge Campillo, Buddy Carlyle, and Vladimir Nunez were all outrighted to triple-A by the Braves, then granted free agency. I'd like to point out that I predicted all of these moves.
Reid Gorecki was also outrighted to triple-A, but he is still under club control.

Thats a bummer
I really liked Buddy. Campillo was good for us in 2008, but I dont really see what role he would have with us in 2010. Nunez…well, Bobby never let him pitch so I dont know what to think.

Campillo, and Carlyle...
would have been pretty cheap, they could have filled any role from long/middle relief to just sitting in AAA as emergency call up should injury disaster strike. I wonder if one or both will be resigned to a minor league deal by the time February rolls around.

well
i think Jorge would want to go somewhere else to earn a spot in MLB instead of AAA. Lets say we keep everyone in our rotation except Huddy (just for arguments sake), Medlen, JoJo Reyes and even a guy like Todd Redmond might get the call before him.
I could see Buddy returning in 2010 tho. He seems like hes liked by all the guys and Bobby.

Because that’s a good reason to keep such a horrible pitcher.

Man what a sad end to Campillo’s Braves career. It’s wierd to think that about this time
last year he was our most effective starter outside of Jurrjens.
Remember when our rotaion looked like this going into ’09 before Wren worked his magic:
Jurrjens
Campillo
Reyes
Morton
Parr
We may have lost 90+ games considering how our offense was if we stuck with that rotation.
Anyways, anyone know about Campillo’s health? I can see him going someplace like MIL to try and win a rotation spot if he is healthy.

A shame about Carlyle and Campillo, both of whom did a respectable job as starters (Buddy 8-7 in 2007, Jorge 8-7 in 2008) but who had health issues this season and kind of fell off the radar. Nunez really didn’t have much success here. Nevertheless, best wishes to them and I hope they catch on elsewhere.

I figured he would be ready to go in ’10. And I thought Buddy would be back as well. Why are the Braves so sold on Acosta?

Is it not somewhat unusual for a team to clear so many spots on the 40 man roster immediately after the end of the season?
I’m wondering if this is a harbinger of more moves in the offing.

November comes fast, so they’ll need the room for any guys they want to protect. It could also be a courtesy thing to these guys, if they’re going to cut them anyway, let them go ahead and do it now so they know and can make plans for lining up jobs for next year.

Campillo is significant, I think
I was thinking he’d be the fall-back plan if the Braves were to trade one of their starters. He could have essentially inherited KK’s role as the long relief-spot starter, since he’s actually shown he can be effective over the course of a season.
That doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be a deal involving one of “The 6,” but I’d say it’s a bit less likely at this point. Kris Medlen would then be the candidate to fill that 6th starter role. Still probably a decent option, but he’s got very limited MLB experience and even less as a starter.
Maybe I’m overthinking.

I’ve been amazed at how many people were counting on Campillo for next year. He came out of nowhere in 08, played well, but certainly faded down the stretch, and then missed most of this year. Who knows if he can even come back next season and play in the majors? It seems like there are any number of AAA vets who could probably be expected to perform as well as Campillo given the chance, and you could have your choice of a healthy one.

Not sure who you think we have that's clearly better
Our best pitchers at AAA are Todd Redmond and Jo-Jo Reyes, and I’d rather not see either of them this year. At AA, we have a couple of decent guys in Scott Diamond and Ryne Reynoso, but neither of them is anything special, and it’s just as well that they’re not ML-ready.

“AAA vets” meant any number of 30 year old minor league free agents with AAA/fringe Major League experience, like Campillo had when he signed as a Minor League free agent with Atlanta, who could be signed, to a Minor League deal, like Campillo, and work their way onto a Major League roster, like Campillo.

Interesting moves
So Campillo, Carlyle, and lastly Nunez granted outright free agency. Only guy that will have teams calling him is going to be Campillo. Campillo will earn a spot on a MLB team for sure and he is worth a team taking a chance on. Nunez and Buddy on the other hand are more than likely to just stay with the Bravos especially Buddy. Buddy is well liked and really doesn’t have that much value after his type 2 diabeties diagnoses earlier during our recently ended season. My guess is that both will be aloud to test the market by the Braves and will be invited to camp but neither will be guranteed a contract.
I like Buddy but it may be time to let our minor league ready surplus of young arms come to the MLB level and get the experience that they need.
Nunez could be done all together as far as I can tell.

Just wondering
Do you guys think that Luis Valdez can be our closer or setup man in 2010 and if not I am just wondering if their is any truth behind the possiblity of a Billy Wagner signing ?

No, Valdez is very unlikely to be able to work as a closer or setup man for a major league team in 2010.

Why is Nunez done all together? He’s only 35 and he just had another outstanding season in AAA. This guy will have no problem finding a job. And why is Campillo a sure thing? Nunez has a much better career track record and isn’t coming off a lost season. This logic makes no sense.

I’m not positive Gorecki isn’t a free agent too. He’s got enough minor league service time to be a free agent if he’s not on a 40 man roster. I’ll be curious to see if he’s on the list when BA puts out the minor league free agents.

Look I agree in some degree with you cbwilk
I am just going on what the Braves front office has done in the past sense I have been watching the team the past 23 some odd yrs. Most of the time when we let guys go out in free agency they struggle (not getting a contract) but going to a new team a’la JD Drew to the Dodgers, and of course their was always A. Jones to the dodgers as well. However if that doesn’t back up my logic then how about this you really want V. NUNEZ to take a place in our bullpen next season. What is up with your logic ? We need proven arms not journey which is exactly what held alot of Braves teams back in the past ten seasons or so especially late 90’s and early 00’s teams. No more journeymen and Wren is not going to let that happen plus we have the talent in young arms. Granted we need experience but the bullpen needs to shift to a youth movement in the offseason.
I do agree that Valdez will not be ready in 2010 and merely posted that for the sake of argument however I would like to see Carlyle return over Campillo and Nunez. Campillo was a flash in pan that we lucked into from Seattle. Nunez was a guy we picked up that was last with the Rockies I believe in AA or AAA. Either way we need to let our young arms pitch already. We have the talent that is all I trying to say.
Campillo is a guy that is a long reliever and no long a 5th starter however alot of teams are going to be looking at him and sense we have Medlen we no longer need him. Medlen is better right now anyway than Campillo will ever be.
I completely agree with you on Gorecki as well he is just not that impressive and was really rushed to the majors is what it looks like to me.
I think we have alot of similar ideas and thank you for a great reply it is hard to get sometimes without being insulted on here.
Go Braves.
