Lowe?
Lowe?
I was just reading in the Braves section of www.cbssports.com
that the Braves GM Wren will try and trade Lowe this off-season.That was no surprise to read but I was kind of taken by surprise to read what was posted about the Braves being rumored to trade for Uggla. Now I'm don't know how to make links too good so bare with me http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/messages/chrono/17567464 .I was hoping some of the other Braves fans with better knowledge of their off-season rumors would better be able to confirm this or if it's just BS.If such a trade was to happen what type of prospects would the Marlins want for his bat.Now I do know that teams aren't able to make moves until after the season is over but I don't know for sure about trades like this.Could someone better help fill me in with this one please.

and poor speculation at that...
uggla gives us nothing that we wouldnt be getting from laroche/prado.

ha yeah that probably wasn’t the best comparison…i was trying to get across that it’d be one of the top right side of the infields in the game

I really don’t have a problem with Uggla. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Braves uniform. I hear he can play 2nd and 3rd. Prado can play 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Chipper won’t be around much longer, someone will have to step in.
by wcubmac on Oct 16, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like that idea. Have him play 2nd til Chipper retires. Then he’ll still have the power a team typically needs out of their 3rd basemen. Uggla is a slugger.

he would cost about 6 million more than prado.

I didn't see it that way
I guess I didn’t look at it that way you know.I was kind of looking at his homerun numbers without even thinking about his upcoming contract.I guess we will just have to wait and see I just hope Wren brings in someone that will lift this offense to playoff caliber. With pitching we are set,but we can definitly use some more pop.But as far as Uggla I guess you make a valid point.

As much as i would like for him to be the starter traded...
He just has no value. You can get that kind of performance in free agency for much less than 15mil. A 36 year old league average pitcher with 45mil left on his contract? Yes please, take all of my prospects!

Lowe will be hard to move with the following availalbe.....
Erik Bedard (31) – Type B
Aroldis Chapman (22)
Doug Davis (34) – Type B
Justin Duchscherer (32) – Type B
Adam Eaton (32)
Jon Garland (30) – $10MM mutual option with $2.5MM or $1MM buyout – Type B
Rich Harden (28) – Type B
Livan Hernandez (35)
Tim Hudson (34) – $12MM mutual option with a $1MM buyout
John Lackey (31) – Type A
Cliff Lee (31) – $8MM club option with a $1MM buyout – Type A
Braden Looper (35) – $6.5MM mutual option with possible buyout – Type B
Jason Marquis (31) – Type B
Brett Myers (29)
Vicente Padilla (32) – Type B
Carl Pavano (34) – Type B
Brad Penny (32)
Odalis Perez (33)
Andy Pettitte (38) – Type B
Joel Pineiro (31) – Type B
Sidney Ponson (33)
Horacio Ramirez (30)
Ben Sheets (31)
John Smoltz (43)
Tim Wakefield (43) – perpetual $4MM club option – Type B
Jarrod Washburn (35)
Brandon Webb (31) – $8.5MM club option with a $2MM buyout – Type B
Randy Wolf (33) – Type A
However, Lackey is probably looking for a 60-100 million dollar deal to be a front runner. Any team looking to add Lackey might be interested in Lowe as a backup plan if the braves are willing to basically give him away with no prospects in return. The braves need to be looking for a straight salary dump if they move him.

I agree
I think giving him away is the answer. It would be worth it not to get anything back to have that extra cash. Win no real sign of arm problems, he will throw 200 innings the next 3 years. I would bet that he has a better year next year with any team he plays for.

Salary
Salary releif is all they are wanting by trading Lowe. It would be great if they could make that trade. Even if they didn’t want Uggla, he would be easier to trade than Lowe. If they make that trade, it might would free up enough money to go after Holliday or Bay.

really?
Lowe will be, most likely, the most expensive closer in MLB.
that, in all honesty, is where we should spend some money, but not 14 million a year.
it’s painfully obvious that Wren felt he had to sign SOMEONE last off season, and he threw too much $ at Lowe. While he performed well for us, he’s getting older and, well, the money could be better spent other places. If someone could take that contract off our hands, we could spend that money (combined with Gonzo and Soriano money) on, say, Figgins and Bay and then see if Wagner is interested in a super incentive-laden deal.

Why do people not get this: The man is already on the payroll. It won’t cost us anything to use him as a closer. If anything, it will save us the 4-5M that we would have spent signing some other closer.

Assuming that he would even agree to go back to the bullpen, we can’t afford a $15 MM pitcher closing, he’ll either be traded or he’ll be in the starting rotation and one of our other starters will be gone.
by Lennox on Oct 18, 2009 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
why cant we afford a $15m Closer when we are already paying him $15 regardless. he is a proven closer and is effective there..
you need to explain why its not a good idea for him to close, outside of money, bc the money is already spent.. and trading another starter just isn’t smart at this point.. we aren’t trading Hudson (bc it would be easier to just not resign him), we aren’t trading JJ or Hanson, and we shouldn’t trade Vazquez (bc he is affordable and quite proficient at the whole gettin outs thing)… that leaves KK or Lowe and both are tough to move at this point. So what do you do with them? (and if u say trade Vazquez ill kick you, metaphorically speaking of course)

There is no way of knowing if Derek Lowe is a proven, effective closer at this point of his career. He was 9 years ago, but he hasn’t pitched in the role since 2001 and will be 37 years old, there’s no way of knowing how his arm is going to respond to bullpen work after 8 years of starting.
And we’re not paying him anything if we trade him.
He won’t be moved to the bullpen because the primary reason for bringing him in was that he’d a dependable ‘innings eater’.coming off a year where we lost multiple starters to injury. Moving him to the ‘pen negates his primary point of value and instantly enters him into a tie with Mariano Rivera as (far and away) the highest paid closers in the game. Which, again, is something that he hasn’t done in close to a decade.
You’re taking a guy who is established as a pretty good starter, and putting him a position where the only way we can get a production value return on his contract is if he has one of the best seasons that a closer has ever had in the history of the game.

I think there may be a possibility to move him to some of the big budget clubs, depending on what we take back in return. He’s the only big money pitcher that I’d say that we even have a chance of dealing. The most likely scenario is that Hudson will have to be let go as FA, unless he’s willing to take an insane hometown discount. But in order for Lowe as closer to work out money wise, we’d have to get Hudson for, like $8 MM a year at the most, which I don’t think is likely..
And, again, this all assumes that Lowe is willing to go back to the bullpen after all this time as a starter.
by Lennox on Oct 18, 2009 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not many teams that could afford him...
There are teams looking for Vet Pitching that have the budget.
Athletics got 25 Million to spend and need a Vet on the starting squad. They also are loaded at relief Pitchers. You would have to be creative for them to work.
Nationals have the money and need a Vet on the starting squad(.)
Mets have the money and the need but don’t know if we want to deal him to them.
Angels? Losing Lackey and they really only have Kazmir and Weaver left as sure things. Plausible?
Yankees always have the money but I don’t know if they want to commit another long term deal. Kinda depends on Andy P. role next year and what they want to do with Joba? There could be discussions here though.
Dodgers if they for some reason decide their desperate enough to sign the guy that they let go because they didn’t want to sign him to a big long term contract????
Every team I listed above would also chomp at the bits for Hudson if we don’t wrap him up.
Don’t know if these teams are feasible for Lowe but if we let Hudson go then I think Lowe’s trade value decreases.

you rather assume lowe can be an effective closer again, and pay him 15 mil (more than mariano rivera), than dump his salary if possible and get a proven closer for cheaper?

the Rays have too much pitching and not enough money they wouldnt want more of both, unless we pay so much of those contracts that it saves the Rays money, if whihc case we would lose a ton of money
and Crawford isnt the big bat we need, although he certainly wouldnt hurt our team at all.

Twins
I was watching the Twins in the playoffs and realized how desperate they are for starting pitching…and infield depth.
That being said…would a trade of a starting pitcher (Lowe-though he would likely be too expensive for the Twins unless the Braves paid a portion or KK) and Kelly Johnson to the Twins for Michael Cuddyer and a prospect make sense?
Cuddyer could play RF or 1B…is RH and would provide the #4 or 5 relief we need. I think he only has one or two more years left…therefore you aren’t blocking Heyward…and by all accounts he is a good clubhouse presence.
Outside of the Twins the other teams that strike me as desperate for pitching would be Milwaukee (though there really isn’t much to bring back except Hart and he doesn’t look as attractive anymore) or maybe Texas. But not sure who would want back in that deal…Cruz? Texas might be even able to afford Lowe and his sinker would be a good pitch to throw in TX…if there is such a thing.
by calbers on Oct 21, 2009 9:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i think a trade involving KK, maybe KJ, and a pitching prospect might work
by Hcgadawgs on Oct 22, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think the Lowe deal is more appealing to the Twins….they were desperate for a reliable workhorse… and i don’t think KK fits that mold (despite what Justin thinks)…
Cuddyer has some money on his contract so the twins would only need to take on an extra 7-8 M (if i am remembering Cuddyer’s deal correctly) and maybe if we chip in some money it would only take KJ and Lowe… although now i realize KJ is an extra 3M so maybe we would have to chip in a substantial amount or a prospect….. i think i’ve gone crosseyed

Meh…if you want 200 innings of decent pitching, I’d take Lowe over KK…if you want a player with more upside, I want KK.
I simply think that at this point, KK is a better option than DLowe for the Braves, not that he is more of a workhorse, per se.
