Three Sheets to the wind???
Well what about Sheets. I know he is an injury risk but right now he is looking pretty good. He can pitch really good when healthy. Glavine might still come back but I would just as soon he retires. This leaves us with pretty much nothing unless we get Lowe. Sheets could still be a cheap option even if we get Lowe.
Vasquez
Jurjens
Lowe
Sheets
Morton, Reyes
I could get excited about that.
Also I think bringing Jones back MIGHT not be a bad investment if its a league minimum deal. It could be a good bridge to some of our young players.

the best thing...
The best thing about Sheets is that he would probably sign a short term deal at a bargain. Something like 1 year/12 million. I doubt Wren goes after him though because he is such an injury risk.

Why hasn't anyone picked up Sheets yet?
I would love the Braves to sign Ben Sheets…but that’s knowing what I know (he’s an incredible pitcher when healthy, and has been healthier than AJ Burnett in his career).
But the fact that there’s no evidence a single MLB team has even offered him a multi-year deal screams to me that there are some serious, serious red flags here – perhaps the injury at the end of last seaons was a big deal

Well, the injury certainly has played a role in no one offering a contract. But I think a large part of it is the economy and teams waiting for someone else to make a move first, hoping to get bargains. Lowe was just offered his first contract a few days ago…Oliver Perez, Adam Dunn, Randy Wolf, et al also haven’t been offered anything yet. I have a feeling once one team expresses interest in Sheets and makes him an offer, other teams will come out and do the same.

Oliver Perez should get his 5/90 though. After all, he is the 5th best lefty in the league.
I think there’s no way we sign Sheets, due to the injury concern. After all, if we didn’t do what it took to keep Smoltz around, I don’t think there’s any way we turn around and ink Sheets to a contract. I think its the right decision, but I guess time will tell.

Not sure the exact quote, but I think WJ was the most telling on this. One day, he’s saying Cincy’s going to go hard after Sheets. Then, like 3 days later, he said the team had no interest, and the shoulder was the reason.
Not good.

you are all fucking idiots
we’re not getting sheets or lowe unless we overpay.
This team just can’t be competitive. We have let so many good ballplayers go without even trying. I’ll admit that the asking price to get peavy was a little high and furcal’s agent fucked us over. However, we let Hoffman go to a competitor (another division, but a wildcard rival) for chump change. Smoltz, a 21-year veteran of the club, was low-balled. I wouldn’t be complaining about Smotlz if he hadn’t been in ATL for 21 yrs.
Manram is still out there. He is the ONLY free-agent available that can make a difference between competitive and “rebuilding”. I can’t imagine anybody would come to ATL with anything in mind other than to prove themselves (sheets) or to get more money than anybody else is willing to pay (norton, ross, possibly lowe)

What role would Hoffman play on the Braves if we would have signed him? This makes absolutely no sense at all.

who the fuck is our closer?
you think smoltz is a risk, but gonzo and soriano have been injured a lot too. Also, when the fuck has our bullpen ever done shit. the last time we had a bullpen bobby could wipe his ass with was when wohlers was decent. I like moylan and I really hope gonzo and soriano bounce back. Hell, i really hope they can last long enough to show us what they got. A closer like Hoffman shortens a game. the man is a fucking beast.
you know what, i’m a braves fan, so I hope i’m dead wrong on this one. i really hope our bullpen does come back. I’m just saying, I don’t see it.

how signing a 41-year-old closer, who is clearly past his prime, would help our team out. Additionally, in my opinion, we had ridiculous bullpens all the way up until 2004.

Wow Lee-Roy
That is quite the vocabulary you have there. I’m impressed. I used to talk like that to though…When I was 17. Our Bullpen is not our problem and was not our problem last year. Gonzo is our closer and will be our closer. Soriano is one of the setup men and so is Moylan. The rest of the staff looks good as well. The problem is we will need to used the hell out of them. We need starters to get us to our bullpen with a lead.

i see your point rwwrodeo
you make a good point. i can see where you’re going with the inning eater strategy. i can understand the value in vasquez. I just feel that we gave up a lot to get him and we are going to overpay him. Nothing wrong with having the guy on the roster. i really hope i’m wrong and the guy has a great year. i’ll be the first one to admit it.
About the bullpen, maybe it’s watching so many games in the 80’s where we were able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. But I feel that is the form we have returned to now. why can’t we get one of those closers that is (nearly) automatic? Smoltz was like that. Wohlers was close (until he lost it). I’m not so sure about Gonzo, but he certainly has potential. We have talent in the pen, but adding a proven veteran (of keeping Smoltz) would make me more comfortable with those young, unproven guys.

gonzo was as automatic as it gets, (despite his penchant for wlaking dudes, sometimes)… he only failed in non save situations…which despite its weirdness, shouldnt have any effect on our assumptions of him as a closer

i think his point is that vazquez is a more solid pitcher than people are giving him credit for and he is also very consistent
since 2000 the guy has pitched 200+ innings except 2004 when he had 194
also in that time span the lowest total k’s has been 150, 179, 184 then after that every year is 190+ k’s including 2003 when he had 241.
the dude has talent and he has stuff i think he just needs the right environment/change of environment from where he was and i think he will surprise alot of people
i personally wouldnt be surprised if he pitched
200 innings
220 k’s
3.5 era
15 w/8-10 losses
i think the only difference between him and lowe next year will be that he strikes people out more than lowe

I’m aware that Vazquez is a very good pitcher, I’m one of the apparent select few who thought the trade was a big win for us. What I was trying to convey to LM is that Sheets being injured the last four seasons isn’t an acceptable excuse as to why his K totals are lower than Javier’s. It actually makes an even greater case for Vazquez.
Unless I just completely read what LM had to say wrong.

i say we take that same package that we would have given smoltz, increase the base salary to 5 mil and offer it to sheets.
he is a guy coming off an injury and he knows it. if he pitches he makes his 12 mil/year deal if he doesnt he’s out 7 mil and braves can prob get some of the 5 mil back from insurance. i would go so far as to give lowe an incentive contract.
3/year at 13 mil
4th year vests with 550 innings pitched in first 3 years (at least 180ish innings per year)
if he completes 30 starts he gets an extra 2 mil each year that he does.
to be honest i believe almost all contracts should be a few million below market value and if they play average it is up to market value and if they are above average the contract goes above market value. but i guess thats just me
