the only way to compete is to SPEND $

in today game in order to compete you must SPEND MONEY...unless you have young talent that is ready to play at the major league level (which we do not have) then you must buy players. you can't get outbid every time you go after a free agent..sometimes you have to overspend to get the players you want.  If we continue to lose out on bigtime players when we have money to spend we will finish 3 or worse in the east every season..,,,, a great rock band once sang SAD BUT TRUE,

Did you have a point,

or were you just making a statement?

by Bmacbandwagon on Jan 8, 2009 3:11 PM EST reply actions

both….the point is if we continue to be penny pinchers we will not compete……

you don’t know what the minor leagues are, do you?

Remember the Rays?

I remember 3 years ago, going to Rays games for $5 and sitting field level – watching them get beat by the Rangers and other teams like them. And look…they “stayed the course”, kept their talent, didnt overspend on any players, and they went to the WS last year. No, to win, you do not need to spend.

People that believe this haven’t done the slightest bit of research and their ignorance becomes unforgivable when they amplify it with pronouncements such as these.

I have done my homework, all you have to do is look at the teams that compete every year. they are the ones spending money. now do your homework and prove to me otherwise big mouth..

Yankees

You’re right, that’s why the Yankees have won so many World Series since 2001 – because they BUY all the talent. Now who’s the idiot?

My goodness...

didn’t the A’s, on a sub-50 million dollar payroll, contend in the AL for six years in a row? Did the Rays not make the World Series this year? Haven’t the Twins posted a winning record since 2001 despite a low payroll? Hell, the Marlins won a second World Series title on a similarly small budget.

The market for baseball players is still riddled with inefficiencies. Steals and RBI still make guys very wealthy despite being dubious measures of offensive contributions. Defense is still vastly undervalued. Minor league contracts give a team six years of a player’s career, often at their peak performance, for a fraction of what they’re really worth. A smart front office can create a bullpen from scraps cast off of other teams (the 2008 Rays are a perfect exacmple), find vastly undervalued players to fill holes (the deal Burrell got from Tampa is a perfect example), and trade overvalued veterans to restock the farm (Mark Mulder for Dan Haren, Kiko Calero, and Daric Barton aught to be against the law). If anyone thinks that spending massive amounts of cash on free agents is the only way to build a consistent winner, they a complete baseball re-education.

by BraveBronco0121 on Jan 9, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

SPEND???

Someone give this guy a list of the past 10 world series champions. The best way to win is to develop your farm system. Especially when you try to spend and no one wants to come here. Honestly. Trading and our farm system are the only two ways we are going to get back on top. I hated to see Smoltz go but really it is probably the best thing for us. I hope we dont sign Glavine either. We have some good talent in the minors right now and that will be our future. This year people will call a rebuilding year but who knows we might bring some of that young talent up and surprise a few people.

by coachg3 on Jan 9, 2009 8:26 AM EST reply actions

WORLD SERIES CHAMPS

THE ONLY TEAM TO WIN THE SERIES THE LAST TEN YEARS WITH HOME GROW TALENT WAS MAYBE THE MARLINS. ALL THE OTHER TEAMS WON WITH FREE AGENTS LEADING THE WAY. SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR FACTS. I HAVE BEEN AND WILL BE A DIE HARD BRAVE FAN FOR MANY A YEAR. SAY WHAT YOU WANT BUT TO COMPETE YOU MUST SPEND MONEY. YOU MAY BE ABLE TO COMPETE FOR A YEAR OR TWO WITHOUT SPENDING MONEY, BUT IF YOU WANT TO COMPETE EVERY YEAR YOU HAVE TO SPEND. WHEN YOU SPEND MONEY YOU DON’T HURT YOUR FARM SYSTEM, WHEN YOU TRADE FOR PLAYERS YOU HURT YOUR FARM SYSTEM. UNTIL THE YOUNG GUYS ARE READY AND WE DO HAVE SOME GOOD YOUNG TALENT, WE MUST SPEND.

didnt the Phillies just win the World series

lets see

Utley=homegrown
Rollins=homegrown
Howard=homegrown
burrel=homegrown
hamles=homegrown

see i just listed their 5 most important players and they all started with the Phillies….the only important cog that wasnt homegrown was Lidge

"We win today, that's two in a row... if we win tomorrow, that's called a winning streak. It has happened before..."

by Swo12bv on Jan 9, 2009 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

and they gave up three homegrown minor leaguers to get Lidge and Victorino was a cheap Rule V draft pickup.

And don’t even get us started on the Rays lineup.

the rays did not win the world series

we as Brave fan know how to lose world series, let’s see how long the Rays can compete. I dod not say you could not compete for a year without spending money. In order to compete every year you must spend money

by coachg3 on Jan 9, 2009 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

So now the Rays are a fluke because they didn’t win the WS? Terrible argument.

Exactly how long did you expect us to make the playoffs in a row? We did it 14 times, but that’s not good enough for you. It’s fans like you that are completely spoiled. Spending money does not ensure competition year in and year out. The Orioles spent like $45mil on a bullpen a couple years ago and what did that get them?

you are correct but

they spend alot of money to keep 4 of those guys, and they don’t win the world series or even make the playoffs without lidge

by coachg3 on Jan 9, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

also

the Phillies have not been good for a long time. I’m saying that in order to be competitive for a long time we must spend money

And...

Unfortantely the phillies have alot of talent in the minors at the moment meaning they will compete for several more years without having to spend the big bucks.

when the young players become free agents see if they can compete then.

by coachg3 on Jan 9, 2009 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

which young players…longo is signed long term… pena as well…i bet upton gets signed this year… they can find a neew SS and or 2B… their pitchers will begin gettin deals as well. not to mention they have three very talented pitchers in the minors…if u dont think the rays are built for the long haul…u know nothing about the team and shoutld stop talking

how can they compete.. its not like they have an abundance of good young pitching… o wait

well they dont have a solid lineup that produces, of which most are lokced up long term or under team control…shit

well their minor league system is barren… son of a bitch thats not true either

but at least they dont have a very good manager who knows how to get the best out of his players

fuck…thats true too

we will see. I bet they finish third in their division this year……..

by coachg3 on Jan 9, 2009 12:24 PM EST reply actions

Because that would totally prove your point.

by Land-Man on Jan 9, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

and where exactly

would you have predicted them to finish last year? face it dude, only dumb teams go out and spend tons of money on free agents…smart teams have a healthy mix of free agents, homegrown and traded players. two of those three components consist of using your farm system wisely, and only one depends on your bank account.
