Chipper trade options
I'd love to move him for another young pitcher to bring up alongside Hanson. So who needs a 3B or DH right now? Who has the young pitching?
The Angels lost their big bat in Teixeira, and they have a bevy of young pitching. Chipper and Guerrero would be a nice 1-2.
The Yankees have Matsui DH-ing, Chipper would be a major upgrade. Can you imagine that lineup with Chipper-ARod-Tex? Maybe we could pry Hughes away.
The Tigers could use Chip over Inge at 3rd or Sheff at DH. I don't know much about their minor league system.
The Red Sox could use Chip at 3rd and move Youk back to 1st and deal Lowell. I still like Buchhloz a lot.
Oakland could be a destination. Even though they signed Giambi, Chip would be a major upgrade over Chavez at 3rd. And Beane has a hard-on for OBP.

If we trade Chipper this offseason, after losing Smoltz, losing out on Furcal, Burnett, Peavy, and possibly resigning Glavine and Lowe…
There’s a solid chance I might kill myself.

We should do shots of ammonia together if he is traded. Then after the drinks, we should play laser tag with sub machine guns.

We should’ve traded Andruw then and we should trade Chipper now. We’re not competing anytime soon and his future is at DH.

Why don’t we trade JJ and Gregor Blanco to the Falcons for Matt Ryan and the Falcons cheerleaders? They could use a good defensive center fielder and we’d be getting like 13 for 2!
I’m sorry for attacking your fandom, that was wrong. But I am getting sick of these crazy trade ideas that would never work. Chipper’s trade value is only high to us because we’re fans and see him play everyday. Yeah, he hits for average, but the only thing that teams see in Chipper is a health risk who’s 36 years old.

When was “then”?
Because the Braves needed Andruw to be competitive in 2007. His defense alone was very valuable.

“Then” was around the ASB in ‘07. It was clear we weren’t going to the playoffs, Andruw’s contract was up at the end of the year, and a ton of teams were interested in him (this was before he really sucked).
That way we could have received a nice prospect via trade. Instead, we got a type B draft pick.

Was Smoltz really gonna be the deciding factor in the success of this season?
Really?

Exactly.
How has our chances to win decreased from Smoltz leaving? Anyone who was counting on him to lead this team to the postseason was not watching last season. We’ve gone from “there’s a slight chance Smoltz could be good” to “we won’t have Smoltz.” I’m sure Wren is ready to give up on the season and trade Chipper now that someone he wasn’t counting on at all is going to another team.

i like your thinking
seeing as we’re not actual gms, and this is all for fun, and thinking about trading chipper jones to the yankees for phil hughes isn’t fun, i’m not really gunna think about this.
but really, frankie boy oughta be thinking about it. anyone remember when we traded dale murphy? chipper just won a batting title at 36 and is a free agent after this year. doesn’t that just scream “trade me before it’s too late.”
that said, i don’t doubt our ability to resign him at a discount next year, and his worth as a teacher is probably immeasurable.

Agreed
I actually agree with this now.
There is no way we contend this year. Chipper is a salary hog, yet he still produces. Lets get some more young talent and shape this team like the Marlins. Young studs coming together in their primes.
although, we’d need a third baseman, lol

like the marlins???… so we depress the fan base to the point the only reason people come to the stadium is for the after show entertainment. we trade away our young talent, build a team to win a championship and then trade it away within three months. This is not something i want to become… if we become the marlins… i have no qualms jumping ship… that is the worst franchise in the history of sports in terms of how they treat their fans. I wouldnt wish the fate of the Marlins upon any fan base.

for all the people that complain about the yankees and their spending (trust me i hate it as well), the biggest travesty is the Marlins

I actually have a buddy that's a Marlins fan
But he’s long stopped calling them the Marlins. Often he refers to them as the ATM, in reference to the Marlins being Jeffrey Loria’s personal ATM, since the team makes far more money in revenue sharing than they spend in payroll.

My take
Some fans have a "we can’t possibly trade __________. That’s blasphemy. So, what happens? The icons decide on their own to move on down the road.
Any player has a right to move on if he wants to. It’s his life. Likewise, any team should have the right to trade any player if they think it helps them. Veteran players get 10/5 protection as part of collective bargaining.
Should the Braves trade Chipper? Chipper has value to a contender that needs one more player to put them over the top. This year if he stays a Brave, he will likely play well, get hurt, play well, get hurt, play well get hurt. While he’s out the Braves will probably lose a lot of games. The 09 Braves will be paying him whether he is in the lineup or not.
The Braves don’t have to trade Chipper. Instead they can wait until he’s a free agent and he either walks away or has very little value left as a major leaguer. Pay him a bunch of money to be loyal or trade him while he still has value and get some talent in return while shedding a big financial burden? What does your heart tell you? What does your head tell you?
Chipper still has 10/5 protection. He may not want to leave under any circumstances and that is his right. On the other hand, he might want one more last best shot at a ring. It might be in everyone’s best interest.

That would be a pretty epic team. I love the guy, but how much longer can his body take the stress of fielding everyday? I hate the DH, but he would be a damn good one.
That said, we have to extend him after this year. He’s Chipper friggin’ Jones. He’s still passable at 3B, and I think he has 2 or 3 more good years. Who knows if he even wants to come back at this point.

so why vasquez
i wouldn’t be opposed so much to the “rebuilding” project, but we already traded some of our best prospects (gilmore, flowers, AND lilly) to get a sub-.500 pitcher. This tells me that that wren is trying to field a team NOW. you can’t sell me both piles of bullshit.
I think the fucking moron is trying to build a losing franchise. Ownership is obviously pissed that nobody bought any tickets the last two times the braves made it to the postseason. Maybe Wren is just the scapegoat. Bottom line it this…….i’m not spending a dime on mlb for anything until the braves field a competitive team.
