SMOLTZ to the BOSOX
Damn. MLBTR is reporting that Smoltzy is signing with the Red Sox! Damn. Damn, Damn, Damn!!!
9:58pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman says Smoltz will call the Braves tomorrow morning to tell them he will sign with Boston. The incentives in the deal are said to be "very attainable." Does this push Tim Wakefield to the bullpen during the summer? It's a good problem to have.
9:20pm: In addition to Rocco Baldelli, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe is reporting that the Red Sox may be close to signing John Smoltz.
As of last night, sources indicated that Smoltz was leaning toward Boston's offer which was said to be somewhere in the vicinity of $5.5 million guaranteed with the opportunity to earn a few million in incentives which could hike the salary up to $10 million. The Sox and Smoltz have been talking since before the Winter Meetings. The Sox do not anticipate that Smoltz will be ready until later in May, but one of the incentives being discussed would be a roster bonus if he's with the team by June 1.
Smoltz will be 42 in May and made $14MM with the Braves last season. It would be quite a surprise to see him leave the Braves after all these years.

Fire Frank Wren
What a bummer. As far as we know, braves didn’t even make an offer. I can’t imagine Smoltz would want to leave if the money in ATL was even close.
When Glavine left, it was understandable because it put him closer to home. Smoltz isn’t signing with Detroit. This guy has been with the team for 20 years and they just let him go. Wren is a bum.

they did offer
mark bowman reports that atlanta offered 2 mill guaranteed with another 5 in incentives for a total of 7 million. Surprisingly to me, Smoltzie is chasing the money here…

could be true
but i still wont believe he is gone until i see it…yes, i am that stubborn. and when i went to espn.com and saw this for the first time, i saw: Source: Smoltz could sign with Redsox, and i remembered how many times that “Source” has been correct this offseason. Maybe this time, “Source” will be wrong and it be a good thing for us brave fans for once…although, Mark Bowman reported that Smoltz has already called some teamates to tell them goodbye….such a sad sad sad day for Braves Nation….

considering how he's sacrificed money before
and considering that all indications were the BRaves didn’t make a serious effort until late, I can’t blame Smoltz. I mean, DOB suggested the BRaves were willing to go to a guaranteed 3 mil. Why not kick it up a bit more to keep a good veteran like Smoltz, particularly since the contract won’t interfere with long range plans?
That said, maybe Smoltz simply wanted a shot at winning as his career wound down. Don’t know, but the fact that the Braves didn’t try should anger Braves fans.

2 things
1. Anyone else think this means FW will pursue one of the remaining FA starters (as opposed to going into next season w/ what we have)?
2. Why does DOB have nothing to say about this?! I have defended the guy, and maybe he’ll have something to contribute later, but he’s missing the boat so far.

I mean ... SERIOUSLY!
“Johnny B, Braves aren’t thinking No. 4 or No. 5 for Smoltz. Assuming he’s a Brave, they’re privately hoping he can be a top-of-the-rotation guy, based on how well he’s thrown in his offseason workouts. They’re not counting on it, but starting to feel cautiously optimistic he could be back better than anyone imagined last summer after his surgery.”
DOB posted that around 5:30 eastern today. The last thing he’s said re: Smoltz. Following that comment, he makes a couple of remarks about music he likes.

Who to hate...
If Wren offered as much and Smoltz left, then all of the respect I had for Smoltz goes right out the window. Fucking sellout.
If Wren just didn’t even offer anything to a healthy Smoltz, then he deserves to be fired on the spot.

AND COMING IN THIRD PLACE ...
DOB commented about ten minutes ago:
"Hey, I posted just as Mark was posting his story. If the $5.5 mill figure is accurate, then yes, I believe he’s gone, too. Because I KNOW Braves had no intention of giving him anywhere near that much guaranteed money.
To be honest, Braves hadn’t even committed to a major league contract yet, which is why I wrote after winter meetings that I was less confident than before about them signing Smoltz. Because we were told there, at winter meetings, that Braves weren’t ready to make an offer and that they were going to construct their team with or without Smoltz and Glavine and all that.
If Smoltz is leaving, then it’s because they haven’t given him any assurances of a guaranteed major league contract anywhere near what Bostons is offering. And if that’s the case, can’t say I blame him at all for leaving."
DOB likes to flip flip IMO.

The completely irrational, fan part of me is dying at hearing about this. I mean, it’s John Freaking Smoltz. I barely remember watching the Braves before he was with them. I got his autograph for the first time this year in Spring Training and was so excited I called up like 15 people immediately. The guy is a god and the toughest player in Braves history.
That being said, the more logical part of me is actually behind not bringing Smoltzie back (and even less behind bringing Glavine back). The truth is, the guy only pitched 28 innings last year and he looked like he was in pain on every single pitch. And yeah, when he’s healthy he’s still as dominant as can be, but he’s turning 42, he’s had a ton of major arm surgeries (seriously, I’ve lost count, 2? 4? 6? somebody help answer this one), how often can you reasonably expect him to be healthy anymore?
As much as I hate to say it, if somebody is willing to guarantee him a major league job and a bunch of money, then good for him, but I don’t think it would be prudent for the Braves to do so. We saw how having a bunch of money tied up in players who aren’t playing hindered them this season, but more importantly, we saw how expecting players to play who can’t hurt them. Signing up for another season of counting on guys who are likely to see more days on the DL than off just doesn’t seem like a good plan.
I love the guy and I’m thankful for all the memories, but if he really needs that kind of financial security and job security, then I wish him well in Boston.

On the one hand I can agree this forces the Braves to turn the corner and shoot for the future … but on the other I feel like my girl just slept with half the fuckin’ football team. I think this may take me a couple days, maybe weeks, to digest. Can’t say I blame him though … question is, is Chipper next to vacate the sinkin’ ship?

This isn't the end of the world
I love Smoltz as much as the next Braves fan, but $5.5mil guaranteed is a lot to throw at a very old starter (?) with a big time injury risk. It’s going to suck a lot of ass to see Smoltz not pitching in a Braves uniform, but it’s probably the right move to make.
Unfortunately, most Atlanta fan are very fickle and will probably see this move as a reason to attend games even less frequently.

maaaaannnnn are you serious?
granted frank wren couldnt relally be blamed for everything else but this he could control. if you look at the market freakin mike hampton who is half the pitcher smoltz is got 2 mil plus inccentives. pavano got somewhere close to a 10 mil dollar deal and they were give him 3 million ?
thats garbage and low balling and they know it. they put to much faith in him to roll over and take it IMO
if frank wren doesnt salvage this he will have an un happy chipper jones on his team requesting to be traded to a contender.
this guy is so worried about the young guys being able to play he doesnt care about who is already there making the team what it is. there will NEVER be another john smoltz and i have full confidence that he is gonna come back better than ever without pain for the first time in awhile.
if frank wren doesnt salvage this he needs to sell the whole team and bring up the AAA squad
sell McCann, Johnson, Frenchy, Diaz, Chipper, Kotchman, Prado, Anderson, Blanco, Vazquez then keep everyone else to be our miracle team of 2010.
BTW thats only if he cant salvage this offseason
