why be a braves fan

My family and I just moved over from England a few months ago. lately, my friends have all been talking about baseball and its all they talk about. They are now telling me that i need a team. We live in Boise, so there is no local team for me to root for and there are obviously no english players for me to root for. Just wondering If I should become a fan of the braves. None of my friends like the braves, they are more into the yankees, red socks, or cubs. If you guys could tell me why I should be a fan of your team, that would be great. I need something.

don’t become a fan of any of those teams you listed. they have the most insufferable fans you will ever meet in your life. other teams to avoid: phillies, mets.

i really can’t tell you WHICH team to choose for, because thats a decision thats all up to you. don’t necessarily feel obligated to gravitate towards a winner, then you could get labeled.

personally, when i was a kid, i picked my teams based on colors that i liked.

say you liek the Braves and when someone asked you why say they were on TBS in England.

by SayHeyWerd on Jan 4, 2009 4:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

One of our pitchers, Phil Stockman was born in England. He was raised in Australia, but he was born in the UK. I don’t think there’s another team with a player from the UK. Go buy a Braves hat!

Don't pick a team yet.

Watch baseball games impartially and find out which players you enjoy watching the most. I am a Brave fan and I would suggest them because: 1) They have one of the best managers in the history of the game 2) They have a bright future with their minor league depth 3) Braves players give you 110%

Be a Braves fan for the regular season. Root for some other team in the playoffs because we have one of the WORST post-season managers.

Braves players give you 110%? Did you ever watch Andruw Jones play?

or jeff francoeur. i can think of 2 braves that go all out…well, 3 on the 3 days a week matt diaz plays

I grew up in Alaska...

and I became a huge Braves fan because of TBS.

With that said...

considering your geographical location, if you don’t go with the Braves, check out the Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Oakland A’s, or San Francisco Giants. I agree with nick9314, watch some baseball, then pick a team. You could also be a huge fan of the sport, yet not really have a team per se. Just some thoughts for you to consider. Welcome!

Only you can pick the team!

I grew up all over the place (to include 4 years in the beautiful UK!), and have been a Braves fan all my life. Honestly, I became a fan because of TBS (during the 80’s), but hey have been my team since. The only thing is once you pick a team, stick with them, through thick and thin. The true Braves fans can tell you how hard it was in the 80’s.

wouldn’t you hate it if an american moved to the uk, decided to pick a football club, gave it some consideration, and went with man u? wouldn’t that piss you off? don’t pick the sox, yankees, or cubs. just do not. honestly, if there’s a team that gets covered in boise (probably rockies or mariners), just go with that one.

but of all the reasonably-sized market teams that are the least likely to suck for a long time, the braves are probably the easiest to root for / least evil. i would also consider the a’s (always lots of homegrown pitching talent, cool uniforms), cardinals (best player & manager in baseball & perpetual overachievers), giants (i think they’re about to be really good, but remember they were barry bonds’ team), and angels (a very un-corny team that is made to seem even less corny by the extremely corny LA dodgers across town).

and i secretly think being a phillies fan would be fun.

probably the best reason,
black people will respect you when they see you with a Braves cap on.

That is true. Not sure how it works, but it does. I got instant cred last night cause of my Braves hat.

I was born in NY and moved to Florida when I was younger, didn’t care for the Yankees and hated the Mets. Loved watching the Braves on TBS. The Braves have always been good for educating new fans during their broadcasts.

by mrrich95 on Jan 4, 2009 9:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

This is true but TBS doesn’t run the braves anymore. It really is a shame because now I have had to spend pretty good money on MLB Extra Innings.

What part of baseball do you most enjoy?

I was an aspiring pitcher in the 1990’s, so I loved watching that legendary rotation.

Honestly, the team has become pretty hard to watch lately. The offense is just pathetic, and I hate the impatient plate approach used by much of the lineup. The pitching might be back to an elite level in a few years, not anytime soon though.

by Land-Man on Jan 4, 2009 9:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i caught a couple of postseason games

and i found it very entertaining to watch pitchers pinpoint their pitch right in the middle of the strikezone, make it move, make it slower, etc.

In the mid-90's

I was an aspiring 3rd baseman, and I really enjoyed frequenting Hooters, so it made good sense that I should be a Braves fan.

Brave Fan Since 65

Am from Seattle area and as youth back in the 60s there were only 2 NL teams on the west coast, Dodgers and Giants. My older brothers had already taken those teams so went with the Milwaukee Braves partially because of Hank Aaron. Having a star on the team that you can follow is important.
The Braves moved to Atlanta the next year. Turner created TBS and it was a real bonus to have the games broadcast nationwide to view. Have been spoiled with the Braves over the years, televised games and 15 or 16 straight playoff seasons.
Why be a Braves fan… one reason might be because of Justin Hayward. That dude could become special.

i cannot wait for Justin Hayward… supposedly 20 times better then his brother

We do have two Australian pitchers, if that means anything to you.

I’d suggest you root for the Seattle Mariners. Sure, they’re likely to be horrible next year and perhaps the next few years, but you’ll get a better appreciation of the game and you’ll get a good payoff by 2012 or so. And besides, they are your regional team.

I believe you've all been had

This is clearly some sort of research project, whether personal or school related I don’t know. Take a look at his profile, he’s been around a lot longer than he’s indicating. Then again, he could’ve been a Longhorn fan from afar but he know’s a little too much about them not to be from Texas.

Please be a Braves fan!

The Braves are a very well established team. They work together as a team very well and they are very fun to watch because they have 3 future hall of fame pitchers – Tim Hudson, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz-he has had over 3,000 strikeouts in his career. And they are a very humble team.

I woudn’t put Hudson in quite yet.
