Everyone has a theory on how to help the Braves

I'm really getting tired of everyone around baseball thinking they can fix the Braves, or offer up their suggestions for signing this player or trading for that player. ESPN's Buster Olney is the latest to try and play at GM:

The Braves would've been in a better position to trade Yunel Escobar in a deal for Peavy had they been able to sign Rafael Furcal. But what they could do, if they are intent on contending in 2009, would be to sign Orlando Cabrera as a stop-gap at shortstop for 2009, and then deal Escobar in the package for Peavy.

It just makes me want to throw poo. My biggest question is "a stop-gap for what?" Our most legitimate shortstop prospect is at least two years away and there are questions about him being able to hold down the position defensively. But beyond Brandon Hicks there is literally no one anywhere close to being a serious shortstop prospect in the Braves system for the next few years.

We gave up any chance of using Yunel Escobar in a trade when we (A) traded Brent Lillibridge and (B) lost out on free agent Rafael Furcal who was a longer-than-one-year solution. I know how important getting another starting pitcher is, but just as important is maintaining good defense -- especially when that defender is a critical member of our offense and a young hitter in his prime. And it's going to take a lot more than Escobar to get Peavy -- a ransom of so many close-to-the-majors prospects that our ability to compete beyond 2009 would be further comprimsed.

Who on here doesn't play GM?

we actually follow the team as opposed to reading bulletpoint headlines in newspapers

That’s a great point about stopgap for who? I wondered that when I read it. I couldn’t even think of Brandon Hicks then (I guess I think of him as a 3rd baseman in my head).

exactly, Yunel is all we got right now, keep em

Maybe he was thinking the braves could possibly draft a shortstop but I’m not really sure.

I’m about as ignorant about him as you, but he sounds like a great player. But, it also sounds like he won’t make it to number 7, though anything can happen before June.

I’d be fine signing Orlando Hudson for 2nd and then using KJ as trade bait to get a legitmate ace or power bat. O-Dawg, Esco, Kotchman, and even Chipper lately would make a great defensive infield and help our pitching staff.

O Dawg

He is going to cost alot of money.

Peavy, Kawakami, Lowe

The Peavy story is so day before yesterday, Olney is out of touch if he thinks the Braves will change their policy on no-trade clauses and he hasn’t properly considered the implications of Moorad buying the Padres. Plus the back years of Peavy’s deal are a terrible financial burden and budget buster.. When Peavy is making 22 million or so, one of our young current AA lefties will probably be a better pitcher and a better fit for our rotation.

Now we read that Kawakami is down to three teams and guess who isn’t among them. Fine with me. Every time the Braves avoid a bidding situation for a pitcher I’m happy.

Which leaves us with Bowman’s report on Lowe, yes the Braves are interested but not for more than the Mets offered (and Lowe declined.) Hooray for fiscal restraint. One of these days a Boras client is going to hit a wall of resistance from owners, and Lowe could be it.

The names of our prospective top starters keep changing, and my ambivalence only grows with each new name. That’s because Tim Hudson, a perfectly adequate #1, will be back in August, and Tommy Hanson, our future #1 is already taxi-ing on the runway. Who knows, John Smoltz could also come back, and I’m not ready to put a ceiling on Jair Jurrjens after he surprised everyone last year. Even if we go with our present roster, the worst that could happen is more major league experience for guys like Charlie Morton, Jo-Jo Reyes, and Jorge Campillo, or some other kid who could pop out in the Spring. There’s a top Cuban free agent Yadel Marti out there as well, if we move fast.

I expect to be watching the Braves in high definition this year. So even if the team isn’t much better, the experience of watching them will be. By 2011 we should be ready to make another run at the postseason, so long as we think long term.

I’m still on the boat of lets just use 2009 as a year to rebuild and give our young players another year to get better. We already have some nice young players in McCann, Kotchman, Johnson, Escobar, and Jurrjens along with some good guys in the bullpen. Lets stop the talk about spending a lot of money on players who won’t be around any more than a couple of years. We could use the money that we would save and start locking up our young players like the Rays have been doing.

If Peavy wanted to be in Atlanta, the deal would have been done already. We couldn’t swing a deal that didn’t include Escobar, and Peavy wasn’t going to the Braves if Escobar wasn’t still playing shortstop for the Braves.

And although I agree that Lowe isn’t worth No. 1 starter money, I’m disappointed to hear that the Braves are out of the running on Kawakami. The team desperately needs to do some sort of community outreach with the Japanese community in Atlanta — the largest outside the Pacific Coast — and bring some of them over to Japan when making their pitch for a Japanese ballplayer.

Hmmm...

“Our most legitimate shortstop prospect is at least two years away and there are questions about him being able to hold down the position defensively”. Honestly, I haven’t heard a bad thing about Hicks’ defense. In fact – and I could be making this up – I could have sworn I’ve read it praised at the position. Quite literally, the only negative I’ve heard about his game is the Ks…

I think we went over this in a post a month or so ago. Personally, I think he’s fine at short, but nothing spectacular. The kind of guy who’ll make the average plays. His arm is average, his range is average. He’s a good player, but nothing special at short.
The big thing is his size. He’s 6’3" and he’s got a body that’s going to put on muscle, so he’s probably going to grow out of short, especially if the power continues.
I also think his overall approach to hitting could be a little better for a college player, but he’s a fine player and with another 2-3 years of seasoning he could be a very good major leaguer.

IMO..

Looking at the Braves now, obviously we’re not the big spenders of the 90’s – we’re gonna have to go the more home grown route – I think Yunel is a great SS on the field – i think he’s a great 2 hitter – has a great arm, and although his character’s been called into question – on the field he’s good. I can’t think of another young SS i’d rather have on our lineup. I think we’re on the right track, we’ve just had a crappy off season. if Johnson comes into spring training like he played in August/September, we get our OF situated – we should be ok – if we hadn’t lost Smoltz, Hudson, and Glavine last year bc of injuries we’d be in a totally different situation – the injury bug hurt us and we just need to be economical as we retool for the next few years. just my opinon though.

what about...

I have a feeling that Grant Green, the SS from USC, is going to fall to us at #7 due to issues of signability. The kid is pretty nasty. We would choose him in a heartbeat and with out 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks, we’d select Big, Projectible SPs.

Green would be our SS of the future (in a year, actually).

But that’s A LONG way from happening. Personally, I would prefer we draft Tyler Matzek in the first round, but that’s me.

i know 2 prospects in this draft. still too far off for me to start salivating…and the college and HS seasons haven’t even started yet, so yeah. green could blow a knee out for all we know.
