Ben Sheets health concerns allayed?

http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/hot_stove/posts/43741

I don't think we'll do it, but FW should sign him now, for cheap. He is a low-risk, high-reward pitcher that can be had for pennies on the dollar. If were gambling on Andruw, we can take a shot on Sheets. This would have the additional bonus of denying the Mets/Phils his services. I guess he could bump Campillo, who may have some trade value now. We're actually pretty stacked in near-mlb-quality pitchers.

Here it comes *gets out the vaseline*

Lowe
Vazquez
Sheets
Jurrjens
Kawakami

I saw this as well and would love to sign him, but it probably ain’t gonna happen.

I guess I should be one to talk.

An awesome defense (pitching) has an offense of its own. Just sign Sheets and Dunn, and be done with it. Unless there is some kind of trade in the works where we can fleece someone.

Remember FW’s comment about how they had several trade options in place? Wonder what he had in the works.

Umm…we don’t need anymore pitching. Hudson may return in August and we have this top prospect pitcher you may have heard of, I think his name is Hanson (some on here call him Hansen) . Anyway, we need a big bopper for our HR anemic offense. Oh did someone say there is a free agent out there who has hit 40 or more HRs that past 5 seasons? Really? And we’re after him right?

we always need more pitching… go take a look at the Red Sox or the Rays… the reason they will continue to succeed in the future is wealth of pitching… if we can get SHeets for cheap, we can turn one of our other pitchers into a good OF or another piece.

'.....we can turn one of our other pitchers into a good OF'

So you think Charlie Morton is the next Rick Ankiel, eh?

I know it’s not what you meant, but…..

Who is out there that you think is available? I like Magglio, but his salary is around $18 mil this year and that would be in addition to whatever Sheets would make. I doubt we have that much to spend. Please don’t say Nady. I like Swisher, but he’s not really the middle of the order presence we need. Ludwick or Ankiel? I think Ankiel is close to being the lefty version of Francoeur and he’s signed for only for one more year. Ludwick would be ok, but I don’t think St Louis is making him available anymore. Would probably take alot to pry him loose. Not to mention you may be trading for him after his career year. Dunn isn’t a perfect player by any means, but he makes sense for us for the next 2 years.

here here

we’re not signing sheets unless is WAYYYYYYYYYYY cheap.

if that’s the case, we trade one of Soriano + Gorkys + Reyes for our outfield bat (and that package could get us someone MIGHTY nice—I’m thinking Rios from Toronto)…

Soriano
Reyes
Gorkys

for

A. Rios

after we sign Sheets. but it’s ONLY a 1 year deal…giving Hanson a chance to season some more at AAA.

sorry

for the rosterbating…it got out of hand.

No.

Just no. There is 0% chance the Jays would do that.

What is so great about Rios? He doesn’t put up big numbers. Nothing others in our lineup can’t put up.

by BravesFan on Jan 24, 2009 6:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he is a complete player… he doest everything very well… a true five tool player… similar to a player like Steve FInley… .theres always room for an Alex Rios on your team. plus he seems like a genuinely good guy, although ive never met him

He may be a “five tool player”, but he’s completely average at anything. Theres nothing that stands out.

i didnt say he was great… i just said he is a true five tool player… i wouldnt call Steve Finley great either… but i doubt there’s an OF in baseball that wouldnt consider RIos an upgrade over what they have ( he legitmately could play all the OF spots, IMHO)

Rios

What’s so great about a 27-year old RF who is worth 4+ wins a year? I don’t know, you tell me.

If Soriano was completely healthy and not an impending free agent and Reyes had established himself as a consistent #2/3 starter, then yes that would be a nice package. But Soriano missed all of last year and Reyes isn’t even the favorite to be the fifth starter in spring training. Couple that with Gorkys’s health problems and the fact that he’s our third best outfield prospect, and that’s a horrible package. Other teams are not dumb, they know what our garbage is.

i certainly wouldnt call Gorkys and Soriano garbage…. Reyes offers the Jays nothing, as they have pitchers similar to him, so he is kinda garbage as far as trade bait goes (he is filler and ntohing else)… If it was Gorkys and Soriano and maybe another Low A arm (preferably not Locke or Rohrborough, although i think one of those would need to be involved)… that might be a deal they would consider but probably not.

Soriano is great when healthy but he missed most of last year. It’s quite hard to trade someone after coming off a major injury. Therefore, he does not have much value – especially with a $6 million dollar salary in this economy, teams aren’t so willing to risk that much money right now. I did not mean to imply that Gorkys was garbage – he’s not, but it’s going to take a lot more than our fourth best prospect, a reliever coming off a major injury with a big salary, and a fifth starter to qualify as a great package.

i completely agree. i was just arguing that i dont think Soriano and Gorkys is garbage…. its not good enough to get Rios but its not garbage

althoguh i do understand that u were exaggerating a bit..

Why not

take the risk, if it is low dollar. Get Sheets and Dun.

by Heap on Jan 23, 2009 10:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Low Dollar.

The Mets and/or Rangers would scoop Sheets up before the dollar value got to the point where we’d be willing to add him. They actually need starting pitching, have been linked to Ben in the past and would gladly swoop in for him given the chance.

Too Late

I wish he had brought out the Medical Papers before we overspent on Lowe. We won’t dish out what he is going to get. We just have to be happy with what we got and go from there. I still think we have a legitiment shot at The Tower Of Power (Adam Dunn).

My Hope.

I hope he’s a Ranger in 2009, because he’d make the Mets that much better if he went to NY.

not to mention

that he normally KILLS us. it would give him more opportunities to do just that if he were in NY.

Thats why I wanted him to join us, If you can’t beat them join them. But after the Lowe signing I knew that dream was dead.
