I haven’t heard anything in over a week. Last I heard was that Atlanta was hesitant to bring him back even for the minimum mainly because Andruw wants a major league contract and Atlanta isn’t sure they want to give him one.

I heard the same thing. Andruw wants a major league deal and the Braves were not willing to give him one. I wish we would focus on signing other guys because I think Andruw will be out there for a while.

Gotcha. No more talk of that guy.

People only get attacked if they make crazy statements like “Andruw has a higher career BA than Adam Dunn and almost twice as many RBI so I think it’s stupid if the Braves want to sign a guaranteed strike out like Dunn, but not Andruw for a lot less money.”

Lot of players rebound...

I’m not saying I think Andruw will, but just hear me out real quick.

In my opinion we’re not going to win the division or the wild card in 09. Why not take a flier on Andruw and hope he bounces back. He is a proud man and one of the greatest CF’s ever. It’s not like he is 38 and hanging on. Hopefully he would play LF only.

In Frenchy bounces back and Andruw has some success then it will be better than Diaz, Anderson, and Frenchy…

whatever…just a thought

You seriously can’t believe Anderson/Blanco would provide better defense in center than Andruw.

Me personally

LF Andruw
RF Frenchy
CF Blanco

I have seen Blanco play CF in hundreds of games and I think only Schafer is better. I saw Jordan in about 35 games. Anderson doesn’t seem to take good angles but I’ve only seen that on tv. We need his SB. If only Blanco would steal a base we wouldn’t need Josh.

Schafer is well above average in center.

by themurph on Jan 23, 2009 12:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

I saw Blanco take some terrible angles playing in center, and doesn’t have that great of a jump. Maybe he can improve defensively in a couple of years, but there’s no way that right now you would put him there ahead of Andruw.

by MattDiazFanClub on Jan 25, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

KIND OF SMALL SAMPLE SIZE ALERT!

Blanco UZR/150 in CF last season (494.1 innings): -5.4
Fat, Soulless, Noncaring Jones UZR/150 in CF last season (496.1 innings): 12.4

It sells itself, right? Thats a nearly 2 win swing in favor of Andruw if he plays center.

This makes me distrust those defensive metrics even more. Gregor has always been an outstanding defender and I didn’t notice any change in him last year in the majors, whether he was in center or not. To say he was a negative defensively kind of cements it for me that these things are bunk.

He was actually really good in left last year.

I'm with ya CB

Though I am growing more confident in UZR and the +/- system by the day I still say NO single season worth of defensive metrics should be used to evaluate the defensive talent of a specific player. Blanco is THE perfect example of my point, anything can happen over a given season. I’m not disputing that Blanco was not good in CF this past year, I’m simply saying we cannot go by last years results to determine whether Blanco is good or bad in CF overall.

im jsut sayin his UZR/150 from 07 to 08 is a lil weird… he was like -20 in 07 then +20 for 08

its quite the difference

But what are you gathering that information from? You think he’s a great defender simply because you see him as that?

I’m just curious.

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

by Smoltz's Beard on Jan 26, 2009 9:26 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely. I think he’s great because I’ve seen him play a ton of ballgames and I feel that I’ve seen enough baseball to make that call. His arm has definitely degraded over the years; when he was younger it was quite strong but it’s average at best now. I don’t know why that happened, but his speed hasn’t deteriorated and he worked hard to learn how to use it. I think he makes good reads, puts himself in the right spot and has the speed to make up for the occasional mistake.

I don’t have any fancy stats or zones or quadrants to back it up. That’s just from a lifetime of watching ball. You guys have definitely changed my perception of hitting stats since I’ve been on this board, but these defensive ones are more or less useless to me. Add in what Swo12bv said about Josh Anderson’s rating on it and I’m giving them pretty much no chance of every meaning anything to me.

UZR/150 is like many percentage stats, a small sample size can produce some crazy numbers.

Anderson played 15 games in CF in ’07. He played 30 games there last season.

If a guy played 2 weeks one season and put up and OBP of .200 and then played a month the next season and put up and OBP of ..400, you wouldn’t throw OBP out the window, would you?

by Lennox on Jan 26, 2009 11:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t throw out OBP because that’s been around for a while, even before it was thought of as a stat the idea of a combination of a player’s ability to get on base and slug was a valuable evaluation tool. Aside from that, I can take his major league OBP within the context of his minor league track record. I’d know that a guy like Anderson doesn’t really have a high OBP, so if it’s too high it’s a fluke of a small sample size, (just like it’s a fluke if it’s too low).

Saying the system is flawed and using Anderson’s rating as an example of why is wrong, and you’re right about that, but somebody pointed out the huge and inexplicable differences for Orlando Hudson, who may not be an amazing second baseman, but he’s certainly above average. The point is, using this system as the key tool to evaluate a player’s defense is flawed, if for no other reason than it can be skewed so wildly. You have to take the player’s history in context too. Gregor Blanco is an outstanding defender and I’m not gonna buy into a system that can’t recognize that, regardless of the sample size.

Interesting.

It’s tough to say when I really stopped trusting what I saw with my own eyes, but the situation with KJ certainly is one of the main reasons why I’m looking for some sort of defensive statisitics that hold some water. I always thought he was horrific, but then I noticed BP rated him as slightly above average. It just made me think about how I really watched the defensive side of the baseball coin. The fact that UZR and +/- all rate him differently is disheartening, so I guess the best one can do at this time is take a look at all of them and compare.

It’s cool, we’re still friends. I actually appreciate the stories you bring to this board. It’s nice to hear guys like you, Yondaime4, Secondbass, etc that can talk about the prospects because you certainly have more exposure than I do. It also helps that you can formulate your thoughts into a coherent message, whereas alot of people who are unwilling to accept these new statistics simply shut off their mind and resort to personal attacks.

I guess I should be one to talk.

That’s funny, cause I never thought KJ was that bad at second, in fact I think he’s improved tremendously over his two years there. He’s never gonna be very above average because his actions aren’t fluid there, (it seems like you can see his mental process while he’s making the plays, having to think about everything he’s doing) and he has a propensity to make more dumb mistakes than most guys, but I think he’s a pretty solid defender.

Oh yeah, we’re definitely still friends. You’re a TC treasure.

He's no Andruw, but ...

Anderson did rank #9 in the Fielding Bible for CF with a +10, which, as far as I understand their system, is really impressive for a guy who only played a month.

by Lennox on Jan 23, 2009 12:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Things are too quiet...

anyone think it’s possible FW is still trying to work the Frenchy deal to KC to make room for Andruw? If you can get top notch young pitching for him and Andruw can hold the spot for Heyward, why not? Andruw isn’t any worse than Frenchy and the price is right.

by BBFAN46 on Jan 23, 2009 11:46 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Andruw’s price tag actually may be a bit higher than the Braves are willing to provide, as Andruw has stated that he will not accept a minor-league deal or a minimum salary from his new team.
