Braves in the WBC.

The provisional rosters for the World Baseball Classic came out tonight and I thought it'd be worth taking a look at which Braves are on the teams and if they'll actually make the final rosters.

USA - 3B Chipper Jones and C Brian McCann. I don't think there's any question these guys are gonna make the team. Hopefully they stay healthy and their absence from Braves camp allows somebody else to make an impression (Diory Hernandez, I'm looking at you).

Netherlands - P Jair Jurrjens. The only reason he won't be on the team is he decides not to play. It'd be good for the Braves too since they can give his spring starts to Charlie Morton, Jo-Jo Reyes, and Tommy Hanson.

Puerto Rico - P Javier Vazquez. Pretty much the same situation as JJ. There could be a lot of open starts for the Braves in Spring Training. Might even throw Todd Redmond, Kris Medlen, and Deunte Heath in there as guys who could get starts.

Mexico - P Jorge Campillo. Looking at the list of Mexican pitchers, there are some recognizable names (including short-lived Braves Elmer Dessens and Rodrigo Lopez), but nobody huge and I can't see Campy not making the team. He may be better off staying with Atlanta and making sure he keeps his spot in the rotation, but a good showing in the WBC would probably do as much for him as Grapefruit League action.

Venezuela - OF Gregor Blanco. Greg White's roster spot is probably secure for the Braves, and he's a pretty big deal in the Venezuelan Winter League, so I'd guess he makes their team pretty easily.

Australia - P Phil Stockman and C Matt Kennelly. Looking at the Australia roster, I can't see any reason these two won't be with the team. Kennelly has no reason not to play, he's going to Rome this year, but Stockman may be better of staying with the Braves and fighting for a spot.

Canada - P Scott Diamond and P Bryan Dumesnil. Diamond (who I didn't even know was from Canada) had a great year with Rome and Myrtle Beach as a starter and Dumesnil had a great year as a lefty reliever for Myrtle Beach and Mississippi, but Canada has plenty of pitchers with more professional and international experience, making it unlikely both of these guys will be with Team Canada. My bet would be on Diamond making the team since they're a little thin on starters.

Panama - P Manny Acosta, P Yeliar Castro, P Dimaster Delgado, C Jose Camarena, OF Concepcion Rodriguez. Who knew half the Panamanian players in the game played for the Braves. Looking at this roster, only Carlos Lee, Carlos Ruiz, and Acosta seem like locks, so who knows if any of the rest of these guys make it. I'd guess Camarena and Concho Rodriguez will make it, but either way, Panama doesn't look like a power house.  Update: As 'bravesfan91' pointed out, P Randall Delgado' is on Panama's roster as well. Given all they hype he's getting lately, it seems likely he'll be on the final roster.

Getting to represent you country in any event is a big deal, so I hope all these guys get the chance to, as long as they stay healthy throughout the tournament.

Davey Johnson said it wouldn’t be the the AS game, meaning only one player from each position would get the majority of playing time. I would start Chipper over Wright, and the competition for McCann isn’t even close.

Did you see the Dominican lineup? F-ing sick! And this is without Man-Ram.

3. Hanley Ramirez
4. Pujols
5. A-Rod

The Dominican team was far too much like the USA team in 2006 – full of all-stars, lack of solidarity. The best players do not always make the right players. A line-up with a heart of Tejada, Ortiz, Pujols, Beltre should’ve throttled the opposition, much like the heart of a line-up featuring Jeter, Chipper, A-Rod, Griffey, Teixeira, Lee, etc. On paper, they might seem like an indomitable force, but they’ve got everything if not more to prove than many of the other squads.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I would bet against

any team with A-Rod on it, he’s such a team player

I would

rather Wright start over Chipper. Sure I want to win but with Chipper’s injury history I don’t want to risk it.

I was just looking over the rosters a little more and they must have made some changes to the eligibility. Donovan Hendricks, who played for the Braves in the minors, is from Australia, but is on the South African roster, as is Paul Rutgers, who actually played for Australia in the 06 WBC. No idea what’s going on there, how they suddenly decided these guys were South African and not Australian.

Also love the rules that let anyone with a vaguely Italian name play for the Italian team, like former Brave minor leaguer Sal Fasano (The Mustachioed One), and some guys who maybe look a little Italian, like former Brave Robert Fick.

I’m not particularly enthralled with the idea of Jurrjens being the best pitcher on the Netherlands’ staff. While the innings totals for these WBC pitchers are low, they are higher leverage innings than a pitcher would typically throw at the spring training stage of the year. Especially considering Jurrjens’ increased vulnerability to injury following a large hike in innings pitched from 2007 to 2008. I don’t think its a disaster for him to pitch in the WBC and he certainly has the right to decide for himself, but I think it might be in the best interest of the Braves for Jurrjens to not pitch in the WBC. An injury to Jurrjens would essentially null the improvements made to our starting rotation over the offseason and Jurrjens is more likely to be injured while playing in the WBC than in a typical eased spring training situation.

That is a valid concern, but how likely is it that the Netherlands really does anything? I mean, how many games is Jurrjens likely to pitch?

by Weldon on Jan 20, 2009 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

Their best pitcher threw 7 innings in 2006 and they are unlikely to advance very far. That inning total is insignificant but my concern would be that if Jurrjens played, he would immediately become their best pitcher. Suppose Jurrjens won his first start and they were in contention in their 3rd game, which they would need to win to advance. Might they be tempted to turn to their lone big leaguer to pitch on short rest or out of the bullpen? This concern is probably overblown and in all likelihood Jurrjens would only throw about 5 innings in the WBC but I would prefer to avoid the “what if” scenarios where he would be throwing high leverage innings this early in the year.

I also agree

Bowman thinks Jurrjens would decline anyway…

Not every Braves player listed on these provisional rosters will definitely compete in the event. Having thrown a career-high 188 1/3 innings in 2008, Jurrjens has indicated that he may decline the opportunity to participate.

Promoted to the front page. I was just reading about the rosters this morning and was going to put up a post.

Randal Delgado is on the provisional roster for Panama too, just putting that out there. If I was running the US team then I’d probably throw this line-up out there for the majority of the time:

Rollins – SS
Sizemore – CF
Jones – DH
Braun – LF
Wright – 3B
Ludwick – RF
McCann – C
Lee – 1B
Pedroia – 2B

Dynamic throughout, and Mac breaks up the righties some.

Don’t you think Davey Johnson (former manager of the Dutch National Team) will start Derek Jeter as he is somewhat the face of the ’09 campaign.

by Dutch Braves Fan on Jan 20, 2009 8:51 AM EST up reply actions

Probably, but he ought to start J-Roll. I was just saying what I’d do.

Got to love a lineup with the MVP hitting 9th.

While it’s pretty cool that we’ll have some Braves participating in the WBC, I am not sure how good of a thing that is headed into the season. If I remember correctly, it seems like a lot of players that played in the last WBC had really slow starts to the MLB season once it actually started up. I don’t have any facts to back it up, just my memory. I would definitely like to see Chipper sit this one out, but you know he’s going to want to play in something like this.

by zest on Jan 20, 2009 8:56 AM EST reply actions

It’s kind of a shame that one of Evan Longoria, David Wright, and Chipper Jones will have to sit, unless maybe they slide one of them to first base, which probably won’t happen

by eaheckman10 on Jan 20, 2009 9:07 AM EST reply actions

After last year

I’d be fine with NO Braves playing in the WBC. Too worried about injuries, especially to pitchers and of course Chipper.

by WienerDog on Jan 20, 2009 9:29 AM EST reply actions

Expectations and darkhorses

I expect the USA to put forth a better showing this year than in ‘06. That was an embarrassment. I’d imagine Chipper to be taking more of a DH role than actual 3B, which is fine by me, and I hope that McCann does not have to take the brunt of the catching duties.

I am all for the WBC, but seeing such an extensive list of Braves players vying for spots is admirable, but I am apprehensive of the post-WBC hangover that has been pretty well documented by many of us here. It will no doubt open up the door in spring training for a lot of the prospects, but nobody wants to see anyone get hurt.

I’m not too terribly concerned about squads like Italy, and the Netherlands, so Jurrjens may really only get to pitch once or twice, and likely not even see close to the pitch counts, especially if they get blown out.

Darkhorses to me, remain Cuba and South Korea. Let’s face it, neither of these teams should be of any surprise to anyone this time, considering their ’06 performance, and their Olympic successes. But the lack of MLB players for these squads seems to be all the reason in the world why people dismiss them. I imagine Japan also has a large target on their back, being the defending champions, and other teams need to prepare for their small ball and aggressive running tactics.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

spring training is gonna suck this year if i don’t show up to games that tommy hanson is starting.

intersting that...

chipper is the oldest on the US team. I have a feeling he will be the face of the US team considering the numbers he put together last year and his national popularity as an all-american boy

by MIZIKE on Jan 20, 2009 11:55 AM EST reply actions

This is off topic...

But in one of Bowman’s latest articles about our rotation he doesn’t even mention Campillo

Top candidates to fill the fifth spot in Atlanta’s starting rotation this year include Charlie Morton, Jo-Jo Reyes, Hanson, James Parr and Glavine, if he proves healthy enough to pitch and accepts whatever offer the Braves might provide.

I know he could be used for long relief, but he was great last year in the rotation before tiring down the stretch. Is he going to get a real chance for the fifth spot or has it already been decided he’s going to the bullpen?

by garriscp on Jan 20, 2009 12:20 PM EST reply actions

You keep listing Campillo as the 5th starter, but you don’t seem to take in the fact that not many with access to the Braves front office are even listing him as a possibility. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he isn’t even penciled in as a starting option.

to the best of my knowledge

A-Rod was chastising a clubhouse attendant for bringing him the wrong sandwich, and Francoueur scolded him. Someone correct me if i’m wrong, but thats what i remember.
