What do you the about Andruw in the of

I have not seen a post about Andruw in a couple of weeks, and it looks like he will be back with the Braves this year.  I think Andruw would be a cheap addition to our outfield and he really has something to prove.  If he would come in an EARN a spot in the team

and have any type of year at all we could really push the phillies and mets for the title.  I also think we should still go after Dunn or Nady for  the final outfield spot.  Could you imagine if Andruw and Frenchy had bounce back years...I know it's hard to imagine that, but if they did  with our new staff, the National League would be ours to lose. I would like to hear what Y'all think.

Am I crazy

Wasn’t there a FanPost about not bringing Andruw back and how he didn’t give 110% or even 90%? Is it gone? Or am I imagining things like the time gondeee got ripped on Boone’s Farm and thought he was Kid Rock?

nope

You’re not crazy. The last Andruw Jones fanpost was just a few days ago. It got deleted yesterday for whatever reason. Maybe it was because buzzdeadwax and I were going on comparing his wife and me.

Sign Him

I watched the video of Andruw taking batting practice with Mac and Chipper. Andruw has lost a lot of weight and looked to be in the best shape he has been in quite a while. When the rumors that we might be interested in bringing him back first began, I was skeptical. But after seeing that he is serious about getting back to playing at a high level, I think we should definitely sign him. He still has talent and from what I’ve read from scouts, he hasn’t lost bat speed. Low cost, high upside move. He will be cheap so that takes much of the risk out of it for us.

Leave Andrew alone...

Its clear that Andrew Jones is done. yes its sad but it happened. I know we want t0 dwell on the past but he’s washed up. He sucked in his last year with the Braves(contract year may I add) and sucked in LA. Down in the Dominican league last time I checked he was hitting .167….We dont need Andrew here, even if he takes a Minor league deal in which he probably wont becuase I am sure theres a team who will take a chance on him.

OF Options:

1) Trade for Swisher, and put him in CF ( 24home runs last year)
2) Trade for Maggalio Ordonez , Jermaine Dye, Carlos Lee or sign Manny Ramierz.

If we were to acquire Swish putting him in CF would be completely counter productive. He’s a much worse defender in CF and then we’d have Gregor Blanco’s offensive production coming out of LF.

by bigjoe on Jan 14, 2009 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno about the league minimum...

Given that he had such an awful season, is coming off injury, is getting paid tons anyway, and will likely retire or sit out the season if he doesn’t make the team (Does anyone think he’ll go to the minors? He may be a nice guy, but I’m sure he has a huge ego) there’s no way we should give him garunteed money, or have to.

A Minor league contract with invite to spring training would make it much easier to cut him if he hasn’t rediscovered the magic, not require a 40-man roster spot, and not potentially lose us $400k (which could buy us a nice young international OF. Maybe from Curacao).

by Bravenewworld on Jan 14, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

a (as in one) nice, young, Curacan OF?

Shit … we could probably get 20 of ‘em. Seriously, good point about guaranteeing him money, although 400K isn’t going to bankrupt us.

I guess I just don’t understand what the OP expects. Sure, the people that have already spoken on the subject could ignore the thread, but that would probably lead to a pretty barren discussion. You yourself said you havn’t talked about it, but you have yet to enter into the discussion. I don’t see any comments from you talking about Andruw…you’re simply here to try and start an argument.

And no offense, but it’s not like coachg3 is adding alot to the discussion himself. He could just as easily have used the search function to find out his answer. If he had something new to add that would be different.

I was just reading the thread and noticed someone attacking coachg3 for adding something that has already been discussed. The only reason I wrote anything is because I started a post a few days ago that got spun completely out of control when someone did the same to me for discussing our 2010 rotation.

It’s just frustrating for people that don’t spend all their time here that might want to post something, and they get attacked for not researching all of the posts that had been made previously.

I apologize for offending anyone.

Smoltz's Beard

I understand where you are coming from. I’ve been reading this blog for about a year now … I sometimes post, but I have limited knowledge of sabermetrics, etc. Heck, I only recently discovered fangraphs. I have been a Braves fan for a long time, but until recently, I honestly thought BA and ERA were enough to evaluate players.

I guess my point is this: We’re all rooting for the same team. Some of us have more limited knowledge than others. It’d be great to see a few more instructional posts (for example: "While ERA is a common way to evaluate pitchers, WHIP, K/BB ration, etc. are more accurate predictors of a pitcher’s future success) and a little less newbie bashing. I think that’s what Gondee was getting at.

Now granted, the OP here didn’t contribute anything new, but who are we to tell him (and whoever decides to join in) that yet another discussion of the positives and negatives of bringing back A Jones is not worthy of this site? If they want to rehash the same points … let ‘em. Just ignore the fanpost and create an awe-inspiring, worthwhile, entirely novel one for yourself. Basically, if nobody wants to join the OP, then who cares? One or two barren fanpost message boards isn’t going to hurt anyone.

I couldn’t care less if people post the SSDD. Normally I just ignore it (except for the 100th Ben Sheets post, I was having a shitty day when I saw that and went off). I agree with you that it would be beneficial to have some instructional posts, but that comes with it’s own problems as I’m sure you’ve seen. Some people just aren’t willing to let go of what they know in regards to BA and ERA, and that it turn brings more arguments. But yes, for the people willing to learn…it would be helpful. But what I don’t get is when the OP gets defensive about how come no one is commenting on his topic…maybe it’s because it’s been covered numerous times?

Andruw himself isn’t so great a risk because the cost should be minimal. From my perspective, the risk would be Bobby Cox’s loyalty. If we did sign Andruw and he were not able to play well, how long would Cox wait to cut bait on the experiment? Andruw is finally in great shape and from most accounts the bat speed is still there but his mental approach at the plate has been a problem. If his head is in the right place, he could still be an impact player but that is a rather large if. I just hope that if we do bring him in, the organization treats him as any other player and evaluates him honestly and doesn’t view him through the lens of past perceptions. Basically, he can’t be treated like Andruw Jones until he plays the way Andruw Jones once did

"Fools rush in where fools have been before"

by jeg on Jan 14, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think it would be a worthwhile idea to bring Andruw Jones back, I would just make him earn a spot on the team and if he can’t we would get rid of him. I am not sure Cox could evaluate him fairly though and I am afraid the Braves would try to keep him around too long. Of course Javy was gone pretty quickly last year in Spring Training, so I could be wrong. I would do whatever I can to make sure the OF is upgraded this year, because the Braves are going to be in bad, bad shape if Jeff Francoeur is the best OF we have.

by bengoodfella on Jan 14, 2009 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

That’s a good way of putting it. And a good point on Cox being loyal to him for too long. And I don’t think his bat speed was as much of a factor in his low BA last year as his focus. Some players have the unique ability to will themselves out of slumps. AJ doens’t seem to possess this gift.

Like someone stated above I would have no problem with giving him a shot to make the team out of spring training. But he would have to make it by proving that he is better than any of the other options that we have.

Why Not?

I think we all agree he would be signing a minor league contract with an invite to spring training. While watching the video of him taken BP I noticed two things that could help him get back in a Braves uniform. One was of course the weight lose ( WOW him and Brian look great ), and two was an opposite field approach. All of those inning ending double plays we had to endure where a result of him not listening to his coaches telling him to drive the ball to right-center. Hopefully if he does return, he checks his ego at the door and changes his approach at the plate. If he did this it would also help cut down on the rally killing strikeouts. I truly believe he has at least two or three more years of productive baseball in him.

A lot of people have proposed the signing of Adam Dunn. Although I do love the power of Dunn, his fielding is atrocious. If Andruw is able to get his head right ( I realize that is a big if ) he is capable of being just as productive as Dunn. And we all are aware of what a thin Andruw is capable of doing in the field. In 2006 ( the year before Andruw went down hill ) these were their numbers.

Dunn-.234 40/92 112 walks 194 strikeouts .365/.490/855

Jones-.262 41/129 82 walks 127 strikeouts .363/.531/894

I know a lot of you were aware of these numbers but i couldn’t resist the comparison.

Now with that said I propose signing both. With an outfield that lacks a power threat, why not secure two great power hitters. I know their combined strikeouts could be a problem. But with one( Jones )of them maybe starting the year in AAA, it might not be a immediate issue.Just imagine what the lineup could look like at the end of the year if everything went my way.

1.Kelly
2.Yunel
3.Chipper
4.Dunn
5.Brian
6.Andruw
7.Jeff
8.Casey

Everyone always talks about how we need a right-handed bat in between Chipper and McCann. Although it would be a luxury i don’t find it to be a necessity. Just ask the Phillies. We would go from having the weakest outfield to one of the most powerful.

I KNOW A LOT OF THINGS WOULD HAVE TO GO RIGHT BUT IT IS JUST A THOUGHT!! DON’T KAPTHENEWBIE!!

Andruw

Comparing what we might have to give up in a trade for Nady or Swisher (plus salary) to the $$ we would need to sign Dunn would make the gamble on Andruw more and more attractive.

Motivation is and always has been huge…for athletes in particular and people in general.

I would be willilng to bet that Andruw might possibly be the most motivated player in MLB in ’09. He has a lot to prove.

If so, bring him back.

Heck, he might actually listen to TP this time around.
