Braves GM Frank Wren on several topics

From MLBTR, who thankfully did the heavy lifting and allowed me to avoid listening to sports talk radio (ugh):

Braves GM Frank Wren was on 790 The Zone yesterday.  Wren explained that the Braves have other options besides Derek Lowe, and had several things in play prior to John Smoltz leaving:

There's other guys out there that we like.  I have trade proposals on my desk as we speak that would bring another pitcher to us.  There's other things we can do...The trade proposal that I have on my desk - that was put in place six weeks ago.

Other notes: Wren wouldn't comment on Andruw Jones, and doesn't see the Braves acquiring Manny Ramirez or Jake Peavy.

Intriguing that he's been able to essentially "sit" on a trade proposal for six weeks. I wonder if he's sitting on it because it's contingent on the Braves making another move first (i.e., signing a free agent pitcher or two) or if he's sitting on it because it involves trading a prospect or player he doesn't really want to trade (and would only do it if he was desperate) -- who knows, but it's interesting that he mentions it.

All things being equal (which they never are, I don't know why I say that all the time) I'd rather the Braves sign Derek Lowe at this point rather than trade for another pitcher. The trade pieces should be saved for that big outfield bat. Yes, we could sign Dunn, but perhaps there is a better fit available via trade than the left-handed hitting Dunn.

Another scenario that's been floating around my head the past week or two; assuming the Braves sign Lowe (and of course, Kawakami), then they may free themselves to trade one of their younger pitchers whom they may have been holding onto to compete for a rotation spot -- specifically, Charlie Morton. The organization seems to hold him in high regard, and other organizations may also like him better than Jo-Jo Reyes or James Parr or Jorge Campillo. I would imagine any trade of Morton would be in exchange for a bat. There haven't been too many hitters traded this off-season and I think those teams with available bats are holding out for pitching in return. If we sign Lowe, then we suddenly have some pretty good depth, and guys like Morton, Reyes, Parr, and Campillo, are all competing (along with Tommy Hanson) for one spot in our rotation.

It doesn't really make much sense to send Morton or Reyes back to triple-A as they have nothing left to prove at that level. The default fifth-starter at this point is Campillo, and if any one else is needed then Hanson could make his debut or any other "almost-ready" prospect like Todd Redmond or Kris Medlen. Don't forget about Anthony Lerew as someone who could come back and add minor league depth for our rotation.

Like we've been saying all winter long, if we could just get a couple of free agent arms, then we'll be able to use some of our young pitching to make a trade. We can likely be even more reckless in trading that young pitching as the pitchers we're considering acquiring or have already acquired are less of an injury risk than most -- Vazquez, Kawakami, and Lowe would be a pretty stable front three. They may not blow your socks off, but after the last few years there's something to be said for consistency and endurance.

I think the last time we said that our rotation was: Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Neagle, Millwood….way way way back in the day!

Maybe a signing of Orlando Hudson, who’s price might’ve dropped, would allow the team to trade a Charlie Morton/Jo-Jo Reyes and KJ for a big outfield bat?

That had crossed my mind also. I can’t believe that O-Hud is still unsigned.

That’d be one heck of a infield, defensively speaking….Esco, O-Dawg, and Kotchman are all ++ defenders and Chipper has been unreal since his move back to the hot corner. We may not be able to throw a couple of #1 starters at people, but we won’t let many sneak through! Maybe even having O-Dawg on the roster would increase the chances Derek Lowe, a groundball machine, of coming this way. Probably just a pipe dream, but who knows…

Teams are not even expressing interest in the guy. I’ve heard the Nats but for the most part, nothing.

Good Post

I like your thinking here. And I gotta admit, I like what Wren is doing. We would be foolish to think that he is just sitting there idle, and getting stomped all over by the MLB market. Wren is no push-over, and to suggest that he is incompetent is ignorant.

Its hard to believe that after all thats gone on this offseason, I would actually be positive about it if we get Lowe signed and get something done for the outfield. To actually reach a point where you would be able to trade one of those young pitchers and still possibly not have room for Glavine is pretty incredible. I credit Frank Wren for staying the course and not declare this a rebuilding year after all the busted moves. If these moves get done, we may have a decent team this year.

You mean the people freaking out about the offseason being an unmitigated failure back in November where overreacting? Shocking.

One and the same. You know, you can only make moves in November.

Verlander

Do you think he would be available? His contract expires this year and the Tigers have been regressing and are getting older. He had an off year this year. It would probably take Gorkys or Schafer and Morton or Reyes or Parr and maybe someone else. Of course this might not even be possibe but if it could happen Wren should only do it if he could resign Verlander. Oh, and how there’s been talk about Greinke what would you guys think if we couldn’t get him but we got Meche?

would they

Dare trade with atlanta again??? We have pretty much raped them in the past…lol.

Trade them Gorkys back??

So we would essentially get J.J and Verlander in exchange for one year of Renteria?

I’m fairly certain that Verlander is signed until like 2012, as is Meche. Over the past two seasons I’ve actually been more impressed with Meche, although Verlander’s contract/age is certainly more appealing.

I guess I should be one to talk.

I didn't want to start a new fanpost but did you hear...

I saw this last night, Michael Young has asked the Rangers to explore the option of trading him. I guess the Rangers want to move Young to third, and plug Elvis Andrus in at SS.

But then this came out this morning.

Anyways, I thought it was interesting.

those guys who talk about defense would blow a gasket if you’re insinuating trading escobar for michael young

No...I don't want to replace Esco at all...

I thought it was interesting because, if I remember right I think he came into the league as a 2nd baseman and if we were willing to sign Furcal, I would think that we might be interested in Young (although Young isn’t nearly the fielder that Fookie is). The downfall would be the fact that we would probably have to trade quite a bit to get him, he makes like 16 million a year, and he has a no trade clause.

Besides that, I brought it up because if the Elvis Andrus angle, like the guys pointed out below.

2B

IIRC, Young wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire defensively at 2B. He’s always got by on his bat, which is a pale shadow of its former self.

The interesting part for me

is that they think Elvis is ready. HA! Talk about rushing a prospect. He very clearly needs more time in the minors. Hell, at the very least let him experience some success before bringing him up.

Seriously! I was shocked when I read that. He’s freaking 20, and at least two years from being ML ready.

Really I think he will be ready by 2010.

That’s a fair opinion. I didn’t get to see him play after he was traded (except during the Futures Game on TV) so I can’t say how much he’s progressed. But the player I saw for a few years had a good ways to go. He needs to be smarter on defense and let his choices catch up to his athleticism. He had a ton of work to do on offense, mostly in picking the right pitches and driving them. The kid is definitely good, but I would’ve thought after what I saw of him with Myrtle Beach in 07 he needed around three more years of seasoning. I guess we’ll see.

by cbwilk on Jan 12, 2009 6:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well you can’t base much on the futures game I mean look at hernandez. If you base him on his performance in the futures game he won’t be ready til 2015.

He could be ready by 2011 but based on stuff I have read about him I think he will be up in 2010.

Is it that they think he is ready

or that Young just wants out and they have no other option? I read that Young asked for the trade, not that they decided to trade him b/c Adnrus was “ready”.

Not sure what you're getting at

They told Young he was moving to 3B this year. Not sure whether the intention was specifically to bring Andrus up, but considering they have no other option at SS I was assuming that is the case. Why else would they move him?

They said that?

I hadn’t heard that they want to move him to 3b. I just heard that he asked to be traded. That is what I was getting at in my post – that it wasnt the Rangers but Young who initiated all of this…but if they indeed asked him to play 3B, my post makes none sense.

Now I see

Click on the first link in the original post. It explains how “livid” Young got after they informed him he was moving to 3B. That’s when he “demanded” a trade.

Apparently, the Rangers think that Andrus is ready. John Hart, Senior Adviser to the GM of the Rangers, believes that he is the guy for right now and the future.

great ideas gondee

after signing a pitcher and trading a young pitcher for a bit, the braves just might win that dogfight for 3rd in the NL East against the Marlins!

At this point, the brave should hang onto the guys they have (unless they know something about a player that the other team doesn’t), and fill out the roster via free agency.
