Why Josh Anderson Will Be '09's Centerfielder
~JB, Atlanta, GA
Last November, the Braves sent "The Vulture" to Houston for then 25 year old Josh Anderson. It gave the Braves one more candidate for the future center field position vacated by the free agent departure of Andruw Jones. Shortly before spring training however, the Braves traded for Kotsay on January 14th, 2008 and Anderson's fate was all but sealed and he would spend '08 in Richmond.
We all know how the story goes from there. Kotsay gets center, gets hurt, Josh comes up, Josh promptly goes right back. But the with the wash of 2008 fully realized and Kot's contract coming up, Mark (and his wife) were sent to Boston and Josh comes back.
But let's flashback to look at Josh's short major league career to date.
A year ago yesterday, Josh Anderson made his major league debut with the Astros. During his time in the September callup of 2007 for Houston, Josh did fairly well. He hit .358 in 21 games with 3 doubles 11 RBI's and a stolen base. His OBP was .413 and an OPS of .816.
This year, now that he's getting some significant playing time after Kotsay's departure to Beantown, here's how Josh's stats look before today's game had started;
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP OPS
Atlanta 17 49 8 16 2 1 1 4 5 0 6 7 .327 .400 .869
This year has seen only a slight drop in batting average but 5 stolen bases in 5 attempts, a higher OPS and a slight pop in the bat that's produced 4 RBI and a triple to go with his homer for '08. Now, 17 games doesn't tell all, so perhaps a better indicator of his readiness to play in Atlanta every day would be what he's done all year long in Richmond.
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB K BA OBP OPS
121 494 77 155 25 4 4 40 42 7 30 57 .314 .358 .763
So the guy can steal bases and he did it at an impressive 85%. A quick peek at his fielding stats and
you'll see nothing too impressive. Eight assists and 2 DP's but only 4 errors this year to give him .987% for all positions played in Richmond.
So there are your numbers on Josh. But why am I so certain Josh will win the starting position for
centerfield?
Well to start with Josh is defying some expectations. One of the biggest flaws brought up on his scouting report say he doesn't hit lefties well. A righty who hits from the left side, Josh's AB's against lefties are few in 2008 but the numbers are good. He's 4-11 hitting .364, .364 OBP, with a double and 1 RBI against southpaws. So though this is a small scope of AB's they are major league AB's and if he's truly adjusted, and he can hit lefties, he would have a lot to offer and be a great every day guy.
The other critique is that he doesn't have a lot to offer in the power department. But his is irrelevant as his strengths are really in his ability to get on base, steal, and help manufacture runs. In an outfield that saw very poor power production, some Braves fans may cringe at the idea of not bringing in a thumper. But Anderson is the kind of player the Braves need to add some moderate pop (the occasional homer or triple but good doubles numbers) and of course he will steal bases. Being a true table setter is Josh's forte and I can't say I don't love the idea of bringing this element back into the lineup for the first time since Furcal.
So the Braves' next move should be to get a power bat, most likely by trade, but the starting job for center field 2009 should go to Anderson. He's making the most of the grooming he's getting in the Show in spite of an 0-5 day in Miami today.
So that leaves Blanco and Schaefer in to be the odd men out. Of course we won't know anything until the job is filled in Spring but if you've watched Josh this month he's playing like centerfield is his to lose. Plus, I think it's time we got a young center fielder who won't strike out like Andruw, hurt his back like Kotsay, or bring potential drama like the "J.S.". And though Blanco has done well with his duties this year, I think Anderson is making him, and any other candidate, look dispensable.
My prediction is that where we once saw #25 patrolling the lawn, #24 will soon be a fixture.

He has some pretty epic BABIPs with not very good LD. Some of that can be explained by speed, but even a 300 average from Anderson is a pretty empty preformance, as his OBP skills aren’t anything special and he has literally no power. Something like a 300/350/375 would be employable over Blanco only if we accept Blanco as a 250 hitter, something I’m not prepared to do when he’s sporting a 24 LD%.

Definitely agree about Anderson
Blanco’s BABIP is a little low. Should probably be around .340 instead of .324. His infield fly tendencies (16.9%) kinda hurt it.
I really like both Blanco and Anderson and I think it will be tough to choose between the two. I would like to bring up another obscure stat of Blanco’s (in addition to his .370obp)that looks at how many pitches he sees in an at bat. Currently he’s 13th in the NL at 4.02 pitches per at bat. I think that’s important on many levels especially as a lead off hitter, where other hitters can see what the starter is throwing and of course tiring and frustrating the starter. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see both of them in the lineup consistently batting 1st and possibly 2nd bringing back memories of Nixon and “Primetime”.

No, it’d be horrible seeing them both in the lineup; that’d mean we were wasting a position (LF) that averages a 813 OPS on a batter who will be lucky to post a 725 OPS.

Braves marketing for one. The fact that we’d be selling low if we traded him. And that there’s not a better replacement in the system for him. And that he’s shown the ability to be an average right fielder.
I’ll note that his BB% and K% have improved over last year and his BABIP should be loads better than .263 based on his LD% of 20.4. There’s not much in his peripherals to explain such a pitiful preformance. We’d look pretty stupid if he rebounded to a .290/.335/.450 after we trade him for a bag of balls.
you’re clearly trolling.

the optimal idea is to splice Blanco and Anderson’s dna so we can get a leadoff hitter with more than one leadoff hitter skill. You know speed, and the ability to get on base.
I thought Blanco had both those skills?
I guess Anderson is the better base runner but Blanco’s pretty fast
Anderson, Blanco and Schafer.
I believe that Blanco and Anderson will both be in Atlanta to start 2009, with one serving as the team’s CF and the other backing up the entire outfield, pinch running and perhaps pinch hitting in the need for someone to just get on base. Schafer might be ready and he’ll get his chance in Spring Training, but I think they’ll at least stunt his arbitration clock by waiting a month or two before bringing him up. If Jordan isn’t starting in CF by the end of the middle of the season.
Here we go again: http://thefulldeck.blogspot.com/
I thought the only reason to hold a player back for a month or so was to prevent them from becoming a Super 2?
Braun (which is irrelevant now since he signed) and Bruce come to mind. Doesn’t it just end up being 3 (or 2.8 or whatever) seasons of crappy wages and 3 arb years versus 2 seasons of crappy wages and 4 arb years for a Super Two? I’m not sure.
Anderson can't hit
And a few days of high BABIP don’t count. Anderson’s minors OBP is worse than Blanco’s MLB OBP. Neither has power.
Anderson is the better base runner, since he stole at a 80% clip in the minors Vs Blanco’s 68%. Could mean he’s faster too, but Blanco’s no slouch.
Defense… We’ll have to see more of Anderson, but he could very well be better than Blanco in CF. Blanco’s pretty average.
So Blanco is the clearly superior offensive choice. Anderson might be better defensively, and he’s good for stealing, which would make him an ideal bench player. Pinch running and defensive subbing. Sounds good.
no no no
Besides a minute sample size in the majors and a batting average driven “successful” season in the minors this year, Josh Anderson sucks. If he’s not hitting for average, he’s a black hole. At least Blanco draws walks.
…as opposed to the defense standing around with BOTH thumbs, gloves and all, up their asses staring at butterflies and seagulls

thats creates some seriously beautiful imagery, and if anyone can somehow create this image with someone via photoshop that would be tremendous… off the top of my head id liek to see if with Uggla and Ramirez (seeing as they generally dont field balls anyways

Cardinal Fan with Trade Idea
I noticed you guys are lacking in the OF position while the Cardinals are extremely deep at the position. We do need a 2B though and think we can work something out for Kelly Johnson.
What do you think of this deal
Cardinals get Kelly Johnson
Braves get two OF’er’s out this group Ankiel, Schumaker, Duncan, Mather, Barton and you have to take Adam Kennedy’s ($1 yr/$4 million) contract.
All the OFer’s are cost controlled for a few more years besides Ankiel who has 1 year of Arb left. I think the Cardinal’s would be giving up a lot just for Kelly Johnson but that is where our biggest hole is at. We just are deep in the minor leagues with players like Colby Rasmus, Jon Jay, and Daryl Jones.
are you serious? REALLY!? i’m sure we’d do that in a second. i have a hardon for chris duncan.

We are stacked in OF
We have a major surplus of OF players look at our depth chart
Ludwick
Ankiel
Schumaker
Barton
Duncan
Mather
Rasmus
Jon Jay
Nick Stavinoha
Daryl Jones
Duncan had back surgery so you would be buying low on him but if he could get his power stroke back than he would be a threat again. All of them besides Duncan and Barton can play all 3 OF positions. Schumaker is the most likely to go but he is also our lead off man and he kills righties.

if i were…whoever your GM is…i’d spin ludwick and attempt to get an ace prospect for him. dude had a career season at 30. gary matthews jr anyone?
but i highly doubt you’d be giving up three players for kelly. THREE GUYS? i love KJ to death…but thats a ltitle much. and including ankiel on that list? whoa nellie. talk about raw potential

The thing with Ludwick
Is that he was always highly touted prospect and had good minor league numbers. But just has had so many injuries over the years this is first time he has been healthy. Kennedy has no value to the team what so ever. He is just taking up a roster spot. I think we might be over paying but we have so much depth.
Ankiel could get a king randsom’s once he hits free agency. With his power potential and his arm strength.

Not even close
.313 /.371/.495/.866 with 17 Hr’a with 55 RBI’s for Garry Matthews in 2005 with Texas.
vs
(Projected)
.296/.372/.582/.954 with 36 HR’s and 112 RBI’s in 2008. Wow!
It would have to be a King’s ransome.
