Minor League Recaps: 8/29

Richmond 7, Norfolk 2

  • B. Lillibridge 2-5 3B, 3 RBI, K
  • R. Gotay 2-4 RBI, K
  • C. Miller 1-5 HR(5), 2 RBI, K
  • J. Parr 5IP 5H 1R 1BB 4K

I'm still not ready to throw James Parr into the top prospect category but he has to have put himself into the Braves plans here at the end of the season. He is definitely on the radar and could be pitching in the bullpen next season. Hell if Jo-Jo and Morton don't live up to some of their potential then they could be watching Parr pitch in their spot. Seriously, the guy doesn't have crazy stuff, he just gets the job done, at least he has at Richmond. (Parr is also only 22 years old, that surprised me). What else is there to say about Corky Miller?

West. Tenn. 4, Mississippi 0

  • J. Lyman 5IP 2H 0R 2BB 3K

Mississippi has sown up their playoff spot so they really don't care about winning anymore. So I don't care about writing about them. Amazing how bad this team was in the first month of the season and how they have turned this around.

Kinston 6, Myrtle Beach 10

  • E. Mejia 3-5 2B, HR(21), 3 RBI, K
  • E. Campbell 1-2 2 RBI, 3 BB, K
  • J. Heyward 2-5 2B, 3 RBI, K
  • C. Kimbrel 1.2IP 1H 0R 1BB 1K

Jason Heyward finally gets a hit with the Pelicans, and HEY!!! it was a good one. Mejia now has 73 XBH on the season. I can't ignore that and I will keep beating that horse. He does have 135 K against 26 BB so that part isn't as good, but when you get that many hits when playing at that park (he has 10 less homers at home) someone will take notice, and its me.

Charleston 15, Rome 7

  • L. Sumoza 1-5 3 K
  • A. Coe 2-5 2B, RBI, K
  • J. Gilmore 2-5 RBI
  • C. Sheha 1-3 2B, 2 RBI, K

Some of the promotions got some hits tonight against the advanced competition (though I wonder if Charleston had some just promoted guys in also). Gilmore has hit in both games back in Rome so I hope he can keep that up. He is the one guy in this bunch I would most like to see do well at the end of the season. Another horse I will keep beating is Chris Shehan is my sleeper pick for our hitters next year.

Danville & GCL Braves

Both of their seasons are finished.

I was at the Richmond game. Parr looked good again, though he looked like he ran out of gas toward the end. I’d agree that he’s in no way a top prospect, but he’s always been an intriguing pitcher and he’s succeeding at the upper levels, so I definitely think he deserves a shot at pitching it Atlanta. He’s probably going to end up as a middle reliever, but there’s nothing wrong with that.
Lillibridge absolutely crushed the ball his first two at bats for the double and the triple.
And a note that isn’t strictly baseball, Damian Moss continues to be the only complete and total a-hole in the history of Australia.

I was at the Rome game tonight. Got to see GImlore and Shehan, among others. Otherwise, what a mess. Cordier and Timms had an awful time in particular – poor Timms hit the backstop more than he hit the catcher’s mitt. The guy we got for Kotsay – Sumoza – well, he didn’t really do much tonight, but they say he’s got potential. You know, they.
Also, Jeff Locke, while he has been added to the Danville roster, was still in Rome tonight – he was in uniform greeting people at the gate, just like at Wal-Mart. I actually thought it was a very cool idea….they had CJ Lee, Jeff Locke, and Freddie Freeman shaking hands and signing autographs as fans came in the gates.
As for Freeman, the mania surrounding him going to Myrtle Beach is running rampant. I went down behind the Braves’ dugout to get pictures and two guys beside me were talking about how nobody had seen Freeman, and wasn’t he gone, and yet why was he on the roster. The whole time, Freeman was sitting in plain sight on the top steps of the dugout – he just had the night off as Coe played 1st base. And after the game, people were saying he’d be leaving tomorrow for the Beach. Well, I was lucky enough to see him after the game and ask him myself – Freddie says he will be in Rome until the end of the season. So there.

And our new guy, Luis Sumoza:

Very, very, very nice picture! Thank you for posting it.

Regarding Cordier and Rodrigo Lopez

From the Rome paper:
“Cordier was sent back to Danville after the game and former Colorado pitcher Rodrigo Lopez will join the team.”
All of this is just roster shuffling stuff to accomodate the big club. But I’ll be in Rome for the last game – maybe I’ll get to see Lopez…..woo hoo!

Parr

I saw him pitch the first game against Toledo and he looked pretty good. As I’ve seen said before, he doesn’t throw crazy heat but he consistently gets the job done (and you gotta love the k/bb and bb/9 ratios). It was good to see him put it all together this year and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in the majors this september.
