Hampton
Will anyone try to acquire Hampton in the next few days? Close races, pitching injuries, etc. might mean that a good 5th starter may mean the difference in getting into the playoffs and staying at home. Would the Mets deal for him (or a Braves reliever)? Would anyone besides the Phillies block a deal (if they fell behind the Mets in the standings)? Not sure how the money, waiver, etc. would come into play with a Hampton deal. Any thoughts on the matter?

He’s basically going to cost $8.5 million to employ for the next month, so i don’t see anyone calling on him. He’s back end filler at best right now and that’s certainly not worth $8.5 million.

Isn't Colorado responsible for the buyout?
This is from Cot’s:
“Colorado to pay $49M ($20M signing bonus, $8M in 2001, $8.5M in 2002, $2M in 2003, $2M in 2004, $2.5M in 2005, $6M buyout in 2009).”
Or does it change if he’s traded?

He is actually. Forgot about that.
$2.5 million is definitely more affordable for a team acquiring him then. The tradeoff for us is if we could dump his salary. There’s no way I’d trade him and assume his salary just to get a prospect back. Sumoza’s are decent players, but $2.5 million is a raise for Kelly Johnson and Casey Kotchman next year.

I think he's owed around 4 - 4.5M without the buyout
Same idea I guess. A lot of contract to move.

I'd agree
If we can sign him cheap, It might make sense. I obviously would not sign him to anything more than a year, but a low contract would be pretty much low risk with a potential decent payout. Just make sure you have injury insurance!

I wouldn’t object – been promoting the idea for a while now actually – if it’s a cheap deal.

I doubt any team is going to take a chance on Hampton at this point, especially with the money he’s owed for the remainder of this season.
I say let him finish this season and offer him a one year 1 or 2 million dollar contract for 2009.

I don't think...
we can get him that cheap even though “he owes us (or someone)”. With today’s market I see someone going around 5-6 million plus some incentives — if he stays healthy for a few more starts this year.
