Kotsay on Verge of Getting Traded to Red Sox

Here's the scoop from ESPN:

Sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons and ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Tuesday that the team is on the verge of acquiring center fielder Mark Kotsay from the Atlanta Braves.

Boston is talking to Kotsay, who was held out of the Braves lineup on Tuesday, about his limited no-trade clause.

The Braves announcers were saying it was suspicious that Kotsay was a late scratch from the Braves lineup.

As I've said before, don't get too excited about who we might get back. The likely return for us right now would be a "player to be named later."

Red Sox player

I would accept nothing less than Justin Masterson, Jed Lowrie, David Ortiz, and Josh Beckett. Kotsay is the glue that holds this team together.

WOW

OMG YOUR AN IDIOT THAT WOULD NEVER WORK. MAYBE FOR JUST LOWRIE AND DAVID ORTIZ BUT NOT MASTERSON AND BECKETT WOW OMG

If it’s a player to be named later, doesn’t that mean the player is on their 40-man roster?

because if you wait 4 weeks, you can get him for the low cost of…a cheaper salary. and thats FOR A WHOLE YEAR!

Kotsay solid?

The only thing solid about him is his head…his BA is okay but the guy has only 6 HR and less than 40 RBI while missing 40+ games because of his plastic back…anything we can get for him, more than a cracked fungo bat will be a bonus. Good riddance!

Kotsay is a decent player.

I’m tired of people selling him short like this. Yeah, he’s got a bum back, but for someone we’re only paying $2MM he’s done exactly what we wanted when we traded for him. Unfortunately, Schafer didn’t work out because of his suspension so we changed from needing Kotsay for a while to needing Kotsay for a year, which he really can’t do with his back.

Also bigjoe: If Boston waits 4 weeks then they have no use for him; they need an outfielder right now, not in the offseason. Sure he’s not an ideal solution, but with the way their outfielders are going down right now they need a quick fix for a couple of weeks, and Kotsay is probably the best option available. So arguing that he can be had for a cheaper salary after the season is missing the point of why they’re trading for him in the first place.

I’m thinking we can probably get a bullpen arm or a fringe starter, but not a whole lot.

Looks like we're getting a "minor-league pitcher"

Will probably end up being someone no one’s heard of who won’t make the majors.

free agent rankings. kotsay isn’t ranked, so we wouldn’t have gotten anything anyway

Keith Law

Says we got minor league outfielder Luis Sumoza. He played at short season class A this year. A link to his stats can be seen here:

I looked at Sumoza’s page says he’s got 5 tool potential but still has holes in his swing, I still thought we had enough OF prospects.
