Braves @ Mets Open Thread: Game 3
Atlanta Braves at New York Mets, Aug 21, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
If nothing else, Hampton could have a good outing and make himself attractive to a playoff team via a waiver wire trade.

I think he’s no better than a #2, at best, and that he gives up way too many hits per inning. Although he certainly keeps his walks down and doesn’t give up too many HRs.

Way too many other people can effect a pitcher’s W-L record. No run support, bullen collapse, etc. Better to go by K, BB, H, HR…thing he actually has control over.

after some research…the only “not good” pitchers would be bret saberhagen, barry zito, doug drabek, john burkett, denny neagle, matt morris, RUSS ORTIZ, dontrelle willis, bartolo colon, mark mulder, david wells, RICK HELLING, scott erickson, bill gullickson…
my answer is rick helling

my final answer is rick helling. career record of 10 games over .500, ERA of 4.68, WHIP of 1.377, 2:1 K:BB

I agree with Helling . . .
But come on now, Jose Lima. It ruled when he came out all jacked up and excited to pitch, and then would give up like four earned runs immediately, and be yanked so fast that the seamlessness of his excitement of him getting into the game, and the excitement of the crowd at him getting yanked was a perfect transition.

Ryan Howard this year? .231/.319/.478 33 HR, 103 RBI
Vinny Castilla. All his 30/100 seasons were when he played for Colorado.

Wells
I agree there. Totally playing over his head for $$$ that year. Funny how Andruw looked at his contract as the gold standard going into FA.

The Wells contract boggles my mind
It’s really back loaded too. Something like 20M a year for the last 4 or 5 years. Horrible. He must like baseball.
Not before 1996, but it’s gotta be Joe Carter. He had three seasons with 100 RBI, and less than a .300 OBP. The dude was on the MVP ballot one year when he had an OPS+ of 85, and was on seven additional MVP ballots to go along with his 5 AS appearances AND HIS CAREER OPS+ is 105!

Stras
Just took the loss to Cuba in that colorey-ring international tournament thing they do every four years. I’d reckon to say that team Cuba is the closest thing to a united major-league-ready caliber team that he’s probably faced.
His line:
4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 5 K
I don’t know if he was pulled due to ineffectiveness (not likely) or pitch count (more plausible) (i wouldn’t know, since I didn’t want to wake up at like 5am EST to watch, nor is an official recap out), but barring health, I can’t see why he wouldn’t have a good career ahead of him. It’s not like we’re going to get him or anything, though. If the Padres tank the rest of their season and somehow do worse than the Nationals, it’s safe to say they’ll take him because he’s a local kid, among all other positive factors.
