5th round pick Jacob Thompson
That means the Braves have signed their first ten picks. Thompson supposedly could have been a first round pick before a poor season with Virginia, so this could potentially be a big signing for the team.

This is great news
he is very comparable to chris young. WIth a little work he could shoot through the system in a couple of years. Next up, Michael Pallazone. He will be a near impossible sign but I say we throw a barrel of money at him. He could come back to haunt us in three years when he ends up in the first round if we dont sign him now.

Money.
Throwing a barrel of money to him could come back to haunt us, since all future draft picks (especially high upside later picks) will use him as precedent. Sometimes our thinking must be more long term for the good of the franchise.

So the worst case scenario is guys will want a couple 100,000 more to sign? I can’t see how that’s a big deal as long as we’re adding big time talent to the system. I’m tired of teams like the Red Sox kicking ass in the draft by taking the best players and signing them while the Braves are only rarely interested in going over slot. There’s no reason we couldn’t devote a couple million extra and draft/sign big talent that drops.

Palazzone...
...is a “summer follow” for the Braves (this being the term that has replaced “draft-and-follow”). We should know in the next two weeks if the Braves have seen enough out of Palazzone in summer ball to feel comfortable giving him the necessary money to break his commitment to Georgia and forgo potentially an even larger bonus in a few years.

Thompson
If it is Thompson, then I am happy-but less thrilled than I would have been a month ago. Jake Thompson got hit pretty hard in the Cape Cod League, so the Braves will have to work with him. At the worst, it is a great risk-and unlike their 2007 draft well worth a 5th round pick.
Yes, Pallazone should be given just about every incentive to sign—but I would be just about as agressive with Pope and BIlly Burns. Zac Fuesser deserves a close look as well. The addition of any one of these players would make the draft a success for the Braves.
Even though they were draft low I would be happy also with Anthony Rendon, Lucas Hileman and Berry Tanner.

great news
People didn’t think he would sign b/c he had two superb years and one down one last year. I think he was just overworked, especially with his stint on team usa before last season.
I’m very high on him, but most scouts say he has great command over average stuff. Still, I like his attitude and he has always been a braves fan. So that has to be good.

Couldn’t have heard better news. The greatest value in the draft is guys who dominated as Freshman and Sophomores, but struggled as Juniors. Great to see we signed him.

For those in the know where do the Braves typically start off college players? What level in the minors?
by dwbrave on Aug 2, 2008 4:42 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
For the most part, they send the college guys to Danville to start. Some more advanced players may end up with Rome to start, but more likely they have to spend a little time at Danville before being promoted to Rome. Rarely a guy will play a game or two for Myrtle Beach.
A guy like Thompson who signed so late might not play this season, so he’d be likely to start at Rome next year.

Just wondering
but has it been officially announced that Thompson signed? I can’t find any info on the signing.

saw this in ba today
Miclat’s Cavaliers teammate and fellow fifth-rounder, righthander Jacob Thompson, signed with the Braves for $195,000 on Aug. 2. Thompson projected as a first-rounder entering the spring, but his command and stuff slipped. When he’s going well, he uses his 6-foot-6 frame to pitch on a steep downhill angle and mixes four solid pitches.

That’s amount doesn’t break my heart at ALL. If he was demanding first roundish compensation then it’d be more difficult to swallow, but this is definitely an acceptable risk/reward price.
