Schafer, really a down year?

Schafer has serious potential.  I was just examining his stats and heres what ive found.  Yes he has struggled mightily against lefties which is to be expected.  He is crushing righties with an OPS of almost 1.000.

All of this we already know.

Last year with Myrtle Beach when he supposedly was breaking out he had a 294 average with 9 homers a 477 slugging percentage, 354 OBP,  and a 831 OPS.  This year in less at-bats with Mississippi, he has a 269 average with 9 homers, a 469 slugging percentage, a 371 OBP, and a 840 OPS.  He also has 41 walks in 260 AB's this year as opposed to 40 walks in 436 AB's last year.  On top of all this, he is playing at Double AA which is a much harder level of competition.

Soooooo,

Is he really doing worse this year than last year?

no one’s been saying he’s struggling since the all-star break. he was doing dogshit terrible before the break, but is raking since.

^--- pretty much sums it up

Nice seeing the walk rate going way up. I don’t want another free swinging outfielder.

i think he shoudl be forgiven for the rough start out the gate, he had a lot on his mind and was probably just trying to hard, on top of dealing with a new level of play… whats most important is that he struggled as much as some one can and righted the ship and is currently raking.. whcih is something you love to see, overcoming adversity

As well..

…as he’s been doing since the break, I still don’t think he’s ready to play CF at the Major League level. Now or next year – IMO I thought it was foolish to think he was going to make the club out of spring – or next year for that matter.

I forsee a scenario where...

We try to resign Kotsay to a 1 year deal and when he eventually breaks down because of his back, Schafer comes up and fills in and stays for good. But another half a season at least in the minors is in order.

i think they may just throw whoever can play out there until they prove they can’t anymore and then bring schafer up.

i wouldn’t mind that provided he can play 130 games.

Not sure if he could though, considering that microchondrial disorder he’s got and whatnot.

by bravesfan91 on Aug 20, 2008 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

seriously, the guy has been hot for two weeks and has brought his numbers back up to a respectable level. He couldn’t maintain a 230 average before august. and as far as I remember no one here ever wrote the guy off. Any time you get suspended for 50 games it isn’t a banner year.

seriously you must know that you cannot put these kind of numbers up in two weeks! A baseball season is a body of work for a long time. Schafer has had lots of ups and downs but did just well enough to get hot and make his numbers look real good. He is having a better year this year than last!

August.

.348/.394/.697 in 66 AB, so I’d say he’s turned it around.

also

it probably takes some time to adjust to hitting without the benefit of HGH.

HGH does not help you hit a baseball

It is used to recover from injury or other ailments.

You're dreaming

HGH makes you stronger. Strength is important to swinging a baseball bat. HGH helps you hit a baseball. Pretty clear to me.

HGH helps how far you hit balls. not the basic act of hitting them. you think HGH improves hand-eye coordination?

wow

Honestly I thought no one would attempt to contradict the point that HGH can improve hitting. It’s really rather pointless to discuss something so obvious but I will persevere.

1. I never said HGH improves hand eye coordination.
2. How far you hit balls is a fundamental aspect of hitting. I could have perfect hand eye coordination but be a terrible hitter, because it never goes anywhere.
3. Strength improves how well you control a large piece of lumber, and thus make contact with the ball. Ever try to control a wood bat as a kid? Yeah, it’s harder the weaker you are.
4. If it didn’t help, then why would player’s abuse HGH? There’s a huge risk of getting caught – do you think they would assume all that risk if there was no reward.

Really people, if you are going to be quick to condemn people like Barry Bonds, the least you can do is hold players of your team to the same standard.

i don’t condemn barry bonds. i’d LOVE to have barry bonds in atlanta. roger clemens on the other hand, is a fucking twat.

I've never condemned Barry...

…I’ve hated him for years and years before all the steroids talk even began. He was a douchebag when he was a Pirate, and he’s still a douchebag.

What a standard reaction!

Involvement

While I admit that its highly probable that he used HGH, its also possible that he never used or purchased it himself. You do know that MiLB or MLB cannot test for HGH yet, right? Also, they never said that he was suspended for using HGH. He could have just known about others buying or selling HGH and not cooperating with investigators.

by JFP on Aug 20, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hgh is good for the healing process and to burn fat and best of all for anti-aging effects. It must have some sort of athletic benefit for the powers to be to ban it. For that reason schafer was wrong for his involvement and was condemned to a 50 game suspension and countless ridicule! He has served his punishment and once again putting up great numbers like last year. His numbers are getting better as the season goes on and his tools are still fantastic according to baseball america. The Braves could use a 5 tool player and soon!

for the record, i wasn't ridiculing him

It’s a perfectly viable explanation for his early troubles, that wasn’t even mentioned prior to my comment.

splits

I was just checking his record, and while he has made marked improvement, his splits worry me. He has a OPS below .600 against lefties and one of just over 1.000 against righties. That’s a rather large difference. Does anyone know if that has improved of late or is it still that extreme even during his recent hot streak?
