Minor League Report 8/11
I figured I'd do this since yondaime has disappeared. So lets get started from the top...
Richmond 4, Durham 2
- Lillibridge, SS: 2/4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 3 SB
- Reyes, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
- Ring, RP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB
No one really stood out for Richmond tonight, it was a team effect. Lillibridge is still only hitting .221, thats very worrisome. Jo-Jo had a pretty bad outing, with all the walks. Ring was a horror show but lucked out
Mississippi - Off
Myrtle Beach 9, Salem 5
- Campbell, 3B: 3/5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B
- Meija, 1B: 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI
- Rohrbough, SP: 6 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Eric Campbell fell a homer short of the cycle and has his OPS creeping towards .900. Bad attitude or not, you can't ignore that. Rohrbough's debut at the Beach can be considered a mild success, as his strikeouts stay up, and the walks stay down.
Rome 9, Hagerstown 6
- Heyward, OF: 2/5, 1 R, 1 RBI
- Freeman, 1B: 2/3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI
- Coe, DH: 2/4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Chad Rodgers was just cruising along, then all hell broke loose in the third, and he couldn't get out. Heyward & Freeman are both around .900 with their OPS, and Heyward is still playing off his scorching July. A tip of the cap to the bullpen, who allowed 5 hits and 1 run in 6 1/3.
Danville 3, Kingsport 2
- Parra, OF: 2/4, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI
- Clemens, SP: 6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R (0 ER), 4 BB, 6 K
Great start from Paul Clemens, and all his peripherals are looking great so far. Camilo Parra's pair of doubles and runs are all the offense the Braves need tonight.
GCL Braves 5, GCL Indians 3
- DeVall, SP: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
- Brooks, 2B: 4/5, 1 3B
- Hiller, OF: 2/4, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
BRETT DEVALL SIGHTING! He pitched well but was obviously on a pitch count. Bullpen did well in relieving him. Robert Brooks did a great job getting on base for the meat of the order, but they couldn't drive him in once. Layton Hiller has been struggling this offseason, but powered the Braves tonight.

Thanks!
Lilli had a red-hot July, but has been abysmal in every other month. Eric Campbell is BACK and he’s got new friends (Heyward, Freeman, Flowers, etc.) this time around. We’re going to need to grow our own power hitters since we don’t seem to have the ability to sign others.

Say Heyward he should be up in the majors right now.

I wonder
if Heyward and Freeman will skip High A and go straight to AA to start next season? I personally think they should both go to High A but I would not be surprised to see them go straight to AA though, I would rather them go to High A first though even for at least a few months.

Tough Question.
Some people think that The Beach, being a pitcher’s park, is a bad place for young power hitters to go, but I disagree. While it’ll surpress their power numbers, it should help to refine their apporach at the plate. If they survive there, then they can be fast-tracked to the majors. I wouldn’t expect them in Atlanta until late in the 2010 season, though.

Jon Mark Owings, who’s having the best year of his career, told me he loves the park in Myrtle Beach because he had to learn how to hit liners and doubles and not aim for the fences. Said once he figured out he couldn’t just jack the ball he was better off, and the homers followed from good swings.

Speaking of Freeman...
From the Rome paper:
“Freddie Freeman went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, giving him 87 RBIs on the year. He has easily eclipsed the Rome single-season record of 77 set by Eric Campbell in 2006. ”
Cool.

08 Draft - Pitchers
Since I would rather look up stats than work or help around the house, here’s a look at how the pitchers from this year’s draft have fared. I put what I thought were the relevent stats (ERA, WHIP, GO:AO) and the numbers you’ll need to get other relevant stats such as K/9, K:BB, etc. Let me know if I missed anything.
Name | Round | ERA | Innings | Hits | Walks | Strikeouts | GO:AO | WHIP
Brett DeVall | 1 sup | 0.93 | 9.2 | 4 | 2 | 7 | 1.86 | 0.65
Tyler Stovall | 2 | 6.10 | 10.1 | 10 | 11 | 14 | 0.33 | 2.08
Zeke Spruill | 2 | 2.25 | 32 | 31 | 6 | 28 | 1.17 | 1.16
Craig Kimbrel | 3 | 0.34 | 26.1 | 6 | 10 | 42 | 2.00 | 0.61
Jacob Thompson | 5 | Has | Not | Pitched | | | | n/a
Paul Clemens | 7 | 2.88 | 50 | 47 | 17 | 46 | 1.14 | 1.28
Brett Oberholtzer | 8 | 2.97 | 30.1 | 30 | 7 | 24 | 1.65 | 1.23
Kyle Farrell | 9 | 5.11 | 24.2 | 30 | 11 | 17 | 0.96 | 1.69
Richard Sullivan | 11 | 2.68 | 43.2 | 41 | 3 | 42 | 2.00 | 1.02
David Francis | 12 | 2.09 | 38.2 | 24 | 11 | 52 | 1.64 | 0.92
Casey Hodges | 23 | 1.20 | 60 | 41 | 13 | 47 | 1.45 | 0.90

I was just looking at the numbers of the draftees and noticed that they were all putting up good numbers. So I decided to take a closer look. Hodges, Francis, Kimbrel, and Spruill have all been excellent. Sullivan has been so-so since his promotion. With Stovall, he’s supposed to be a good hitter also, so if it looks like he can’t pitch, maybe he’d be a good outfielder.
