Brews @ Braves: It's Chuck James Beeyach

Milwaukee Brewers at Atlanta Braves, Aug 1, 2008 7:35 PM EDT

I'm mildly excited to see Chuck James back in the big leagues and ready to make a start for Atlanta. Chuck had arguably one of his best starts against the Brew-Crew last year when he beat them 2-to-1 while recording a season-high eight strikeouts. (If you are faint of heart you will not want to look at the lineup for that game.) It would be nice to get James going in the right direction again as it seems like we will need all the warm bodies in the rotation we can get just to make it through the rest of the season.

Holy Schnikees!

That’s great news about Corky.

I just had a great nap. Plan to walk to Five Guys to get a burger, come back and watch the game. Might be celebrating awhile now that Corky’s gone.

Man, it’s been a very loooooooooooooong week. Go Braves!

Man

I remember when Five Guys was literally five locations in Virginia. Now they’re everywhere. They even followed me down to Atlanta.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Tom Hallion!

I love this ump more than any ump in the history of baseball.

Welcome back...

Chucky. You are fitting right in.

by sddbaker on Aug 1, 2008 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

Oh heck...

he don’t worry about that stuff. Pitching is like installing windows. You don’t think about it, you just git er done.

Finished dinner

and we’re already down 3.

by VictorW on Aug 1, 2008 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Just lucky I guess.

That or Chuck James is pitching.

by mburris1 on Aug 1, 2008 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Watching the "backstage" crap is a waste.

I dislike Skip as much as anyone else, but Pujols damn it, I just do not care.

by mburris1 on Aug 1, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

But I’m glad to hear silence as opposed to Chip Caray making a mess of himself at Prince Fielder’s bomb. Silence – kinda like being at the game.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Chuck James has more HRs given up than games started.

That’s not good when you’re a starting pitcher.

by VictorW on Aug 1, 2008 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

Careful

you might get labeled a “stat guy”

+1

Oh crap is 1 a stat?

by VictorW on Aug 1, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Not if I don’t keep track of them.

I think.

It feels like

That Mike Cameron always homers against us, no matter who he’s playing for.

Is it just me

Or does Chuck James hang every pitch he throws?

Pretty easy to hit against a guy with 2 pitches that he consistently throws at the belt and higher.

I leave for a few minutes

Back with my food, and damn, down 6 runs. Is Chuck still in the game? hahaha

Looks like I’ll be watching the 2 new Naruto episodes early tonight.

Buddy Carlyle.

They took out Chuck “Hang ‘Em and Bang ‘Em” James.

Where you at

Sparhawk? Curious to know where Five Guys are spreading out to nowadays.

Livan Hernandez is available

An inning-eater, decent hitting pitcher, a veteran. BUT, he’s having a disappointing year, clearly degrading with each passing season, his WHIP is going up, innings are going down, SOs going down, ERA is rising. . .

http://www.baseball-reference.com/h/hernali01.shtml

But the question is, at his current state, is he still a better alternative to the run parades that some of our current pitchers are giving up on a nightly basis?

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Aug 1, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions

I think he'd be worth a try

I mean come on, we picked up Julian Tavarez. The Braves should go after Livan if they can get him cheap.

by Sparhawk on Aug 1, 2008 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

He's a World Series MVP!

He’s a winner! He has a ring! He’s a vet!

Do we have enough pitching depth? If not, then, yeah grab him. But he’s probably not going to be better than anyone we already have.

by VictorW on Aug 1, 2008 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Believe me

My opinion of him isn’t that much higher than that, either. Besides, Eric Gregg was the NLCS MVP that year.

But along with the idea of keeping certain prospects in the minors to “season,” and keep their confidence high, I don’t think it would hurt much to extend a branch to the old guy. At this point, it’s not a matter of being better or worse than what we have, it’s more about actually being able to pitch at all without being on the DL.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Aug 1, 2008 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, wasn't trying to imply that you thought he'd be better

It just amuses me that that’s probably what some people still think about him.

If they plan on sending Charlie and/or Chuckie down and Mike Hampton’s season ends then, yeah, he’s a nice warm body who can throw the ball.

by VictorW on Aug 1, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

A warm body that can finish 5 inning?

Maybe, but I would like to think there is a guy that isn’t old and fat that can get some innings. We are done with this year anyway, why sign him over calling someone up?

I know watching Chuck James throw BP fastballs down the middle is brutal. You have to ask yourself, is it better to figure out what we have now as opposed to trying to win an extra game or two, which is the max that Livan could possibly help us?

by mburris1 on Aug 1, 2008 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

That's an under statement

I can’t count how many times the Braves have left runners in scoring position. I’d be willing to bet that’s its the most in the league.

by Sparhawk on Aug 1, 2008 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not willing to go that far.

However, we do have a .315 OBP with the bases loaded in all situations, which is good for 17th in the major leagues this year.

The good news? The Mets are last with a whopping .237 OBP.

It is beyond my patience level to dig around for bases loaded, 2-out stats, if someone else wants to, go for it.

by mburris1 on Aug 1, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yay Baseball-Reference

I don’t have the patience to look up 2 out stats either, but I’ll just expand on the bases loaded in general.

We’re 4% worse than the league average when we have the bases loaded (96 sOPS) and 11% worse than what our team production is with the bases loaded (89 tOPS). This is over 115 AB (not including today).

Here’s Jeff Francoeur’s bases loaded stats this year in 23 AB:
.130/.130/.174
7 SO, 4 GIDP

I think that’s why it feels like we fail so much with the bases loaded.

by VictorW on Aug 1, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

So what does everyone think about Griffey patrolling center again?

And how many games do you think it’ll take for him to get injured?

by VictorW on Aug 1, 2008 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

Guess royhobbs was correct...

we used all our hits last night.
This is ever so ugly.

by Lizziebeth on Aug 1, 2008 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

i lasted until the stretch. thank GOD i missed ring of fire, because i probably would have gotten kicked out with all the young children around me.

i was sitting RIGHT behind the foul pole in left. david riske threw water in the window of the kia driving around the warning track. it was funny. some guy legit pushed a 5 year old out of the way for a BP ball thrown up from the crowd. it was funny. royce ring refused to throw any balls in the crowd, probably cuz he’s a douche, and sucks at baseball.

maybe chuck james should just retire now, and maybe get a job in construction. yechhhhh

I wanted to come and join this comment-fest last night, but TC wouldn’t load for me – I kept getting an error message. Might have been my laptop, but I’m wondering if it was the site. Anyone else have problems?

Of course, looking at the end result, maybe it was a blessing. 9-0? Cripes.

by VegasAces on Aug 2, 2008 8:23 AM EDT reply actions

I had the same problem. It would load and I could see the page but then a damn window kept popping shutting down the site.

Good to know…at least it wasn’t my PC then. Everything’s been working fine today.
